Recent systematic reviews and empirical evaluations of the cognitive sciences literature suggest that publication and other reporting biases are prevalent across diverse domains of cognitive science. In this review, we summarize the various forms of publication and reporting biases and other questionable research practices, and overview the available methods for probing into their existence. We discuss the available empirical evidence for the presence of such biases across the neuroimaging, animal, other preclinical, psychological, clinical trials, and genetics literature in the cognitive scie

BACKGROUND: The single patient (n-of-1) trial can be used to resolve therapeutic uncertainty for the individual patient. Treatment alternatives are systematically tested against each other, generating patient-specific data used to inform an individualized treatment plan. We hypothesize that clinical decisions informed by n-of-1 trials improve patient outcomes compared to usual care. Our objective was to provide an overview of the clinical trial evidence on the effect of n-of-1 trials on clinical outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic search of medical databases, trial registries, and gray literature

The forced swim test (FST) assesses antidepressant activity in rodents by measuring suppression of immobility. This study reviewed the literature to evaluate how experimental conditions, study quality, and bias influence antidepressant efficacy in the FST (PROSPERO: CRD42020200604). Systematic searches in Embase and MEDLINE (PubMed) identified 8247 relevant records. After being screened by two independent reviewers, 2588 records were included in the library. A random sample ( k = 200) yielded 561 studies for meta-analysis. One reviewer extracted data, double-checked by a second; discrepancies

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency and perform a qualitative analysis of spin bias in publications of controlled trials assessing the therapeutic use of cannabis derivatives and their synthetic analogues.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Meta-epidemiologic study carried out at the Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Brazil.
RESULTS: A total of 65 publications with at least one efficacy primary outcome were considered. The results analysis for the primary outcome indicated statistically significant effects in 44.6% (29/65) of the publications, and 70.7% (45/65) of the conclusions were considered

It has often been reported that mental exertion, presumably leading to mental fatigue, can negatively affect exercise performance; however, recent findings have questioned the strength of the effect. To further complicate this issue, an overlooked problem might be the presence of publication bias in studies using underpowered designs, which is known to inflate false positive report probability and effect size estimates. Altogether, the presence of bias is likely to reduce the evidential value of the published literature on this topic, although it is unknown to what extent. The purpose of the c

BACKGROUND: Previous literature on the association between infections and the risk of developing ankylosing spondylitis (AS) presented controversial results. This meta-analysis aimed to quantitatively investigate the effect of infections on the risk of AS.
METHODS: We searched the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases until March 26, 2021 for analytical epidemiological studies on the association between infections and the risk of AS. Fixed or random effect models were used to calculate total risk estimates based on study heterogeneity. Subgroup analysis, and sensitivity analysis were a

I read with great interest the innovative review paper recently published by Kudlow et al. (2015). The authors address an important topic, investigating the prevalence and odds of bipolar disorder (BD) among people with fibromyalgia (FM), which has received minimal attention in the literature to date. Whilst this paper was helpful and clearly advanced the field, the authors determined the 'pooled prevalence rate' based upon a calculation using the sum of the total number of people with BD across all studies divided by the total sample size and did not perform a meta-analysis. Therefore, utilis

OBJECTIVE: To test for publication bias with alprazolam, the most widely prescribed benzodiazepine, by comparing its efficacy for panic disorder using trial results from (1) the published literature and (2) the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
METHODS: From FDA reviews, we included data from all phase 2/3 efficacy trials of alprazolam extended-release (Xanax XR) for the treatment of panic disorder. A search for matching publications was performed using PubMed and Google Scholar. Publication bias was examined by comparing: (1) overall trial results (positive or not) according to the FDA

We systematically investigated how 11 overlapping meta-analyses on the association between CYP2C19 loss-of-function alleles and clinical efficacy of clopidogrel could yield contradictory outcomes. The results of the meta-analyses differed because more recent meta-analyses included more primary studies and some had not included conference abstracts. Conclusions differed because between-study heterogeneity and publication bias were handled differently across meta-analyses. All meta-analyses on the clinical end point observed significant heterogeneity and several reported evidence for publication

INTRODUCTION: Selective outcome reporting (SOR) is a bias that can occur in randomized controlled trials (RCTs), defined as the alteration or omission of primary outcome in the publication compared to the original protocol. Researchers may modify outcomes to highlight statistically significant results. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of SOR in RCTs related to dental caries in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are prevalent especially in developing children. There seems to be an association between these two variables.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate this association among children and adolescents using a systematic review and umbrella meta-analysis technique.
METHODS: The PRISMA reference databases like PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar were searched for all records published before January 2025. Meta-analyses that evaluated the association among < 18-year-olds were included. Parameters like odds ratio (OR) and mean difference (MD)

Van Aert and Van Assen (2026) introduced a novel method called p-uniform* for estimating average effect size in meta-analyses subject to publication bias. They characterized the method as a distinct, more parsimonious model than the well-known three-parameter selection model (3PSM) of Hedges (1992). I argue that p-uniform* is not a distinct model, but rather a different estimator of the average effect size and heterogeneity parameters of the 3PSM. The p-uniform* estimator coincides with the maximum likelihood estimator of the 3PSM when all included effects have identical sampling variances; ot

This study aimed to analyze the impact of chewing gum on halitosis parameters. Three databases were searched with the following focused question: 'Can chewing gum additionally reduce halitosis parameters, such as organoleptic scores and volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), when compared to a control treatment'? Controlled clinical trials presenting at least two halitosis measurements (organoleptic scores and/or VSC) were included. Ten studies were included, and different active ingredients were used. One study was performed using a chewing gum without any active ingredient. Chewing gum containing

INTRODUCTION: Systematic reviews and meta-analyses evaluating platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are vulnerable to spin (i.e., misrepresentation of study findings). We sought to describe the incidence of spin in the abstracts of systematic reviews and meta-analyses reporting on PRP for knee osteoarthritis.
METHODS: A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses search was conducted in Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane databases to identify systematic reviews and meta-analyses on PRP injections for knee osteoarthritis. Data collected from abstracts included 21 types of spin

As radical health professionals, we have the triple identity of workers, of activists, and of intellectuals that creates the cauldron in which we live contradictory lives. We share the concerns of other workers for salaries, job security, health and safety at work, and work load. But like teachers and unlike most other workers we are not completely alienated from our work and have a stake in the outcomes of our labors that we are not always free to express or act on. As professionals, we share with our colleagues the intellectual curiosity about the origins of new infectious diseases, how raci

Fabry disease is an X-linked inherited, progressive disorder of lipid metabolism resulting from the deficient activity of the enzyme α-galactosidase. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with recombinant agalsidase, with intravenous infusions of either agalsidase beta or agalsidase alfa, is available and clinical experience now exceeds 15 years. There are very few randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trials evaluating the outcomes of ERT. Data are often derived from observational, registry-based studies and case reports. Pooled analysis of data from different sources may be limited by the heter

BACKGROUND: Networks of trials assessing several treatment options available for the same condition are increasingly considered. Randomized trial evidence may be missing because of reporting bias. We propose a test for reporting bias in trial networks.
METHODS: We test whether there is an excess of trials with statistically significant results across a network of trials. The observed number of trials with nominally statistically significant p-values across the network is compared with the expected number. The performance of the test (type I error rate and power) was assessed using simulation

BACKGROUND: Accessible biomarkers to predict conversion to Alzheimer's disease and other dementias in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) are urgently needed. Plasma neurofilament light (NfL) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) are leading candidates, but their utility remains debated.
OBJECTIVE: We systematically reviewed the prognostic value of plasma NfL and GFAP in MCI using Robust Bayesian Meta-Analysis (RoBMA) to formally model and adjust for publication bias.
METHODS: We searched major databases through September 2025 for longitudinal cohort studies (Protocol: OSF 10.17605/OSF.IO/9
