SENTINEL-Chain: a blockchain-integrated privacy-preserving framework for secure healthcare data publishing.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic health records (EHRs) are central to healthcare analytics, but their granularity increases re-identification risk when shared. Conventional privacy-preserving methods including k-anonymity, l-diversity, and differential privacy often protect confidentiality at the expense of analytical utility by weakening clinically meaningful correlations. METHODS: We propose SENTINEL-Chain, a blockchain-integrated privacy-preserving framework for secure EHR publishing. The privacy layer combines six mechanisms: Adaptive Correlation-Aware Perturbation (ACAP), Hierarchical Multi-Gran

Black Women in Medical Education Publishing: Bibliometric and Testimonio Accounts Using Intersectionality Methodology.

BACKGROUND: Black women in academic medicine experience racial and gender discrimination, all while being tasked with improving a flawed system. Representation of Black women in medicine remains low, yet they bear the burden of fostering diversity and mentoring trainees, exacerbating their minority tax and emotional labor, and negatively impacting career progression. OBJECTIVE: To complement qualitative accounts of Black women authors in the medical education literature with a quantitative account of their representation. We used statistical modeling to estimate the representation of Black wo

Standards in semen examination: publishing reproducible and reliable data based on high-quality methodology.

Biomedical science is rapidly developing in terms of more transparency, openness and reproducibility of scientific publications. This is even more important for all studies that are based on results from basic semen examination. Recently two concordant documents have been published: the 6th edition of the WHO Laboratory Manual for the Examination and Processing of Human Semen, and the International Standard ISO 23162:2021. With these tools, we propose that authors should be instructed to follow these laboratory methods in order to publish studies in peer-reviewed journals, preferable by using

At the time of submission to JCSM, the corresponding author, on behalf of all co-authors, needs to certify adherence to these principles. The principles are as follows: All authors listed on a manuscript considered for publication have approved its submission and (if accepted) publication as provided to JCSM. Walking the Middle Path : Problem, Policy, and Adaptation to Generative-AI in Academic Publishing.

The arrival of publicly-accessible generative-AI tools, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, has significantly disrupted standard practice in education, research, and publishing. Academic publishers and journals, in particular, have responded by adopting policies which reflect both how they perceive the problems that generative-AI tools pose, and what kinds of solutions address these issues while remaining consistent with key scholarly values: integrity, transparency, and the primacy of human authorship. This article surveys the current state of generative-AI in academic publishing-including relevant pol

Gender-specific effects of COVID-19 lockdowns on scientific publishing productivity: Impact and resilience.

RATIONALE: The SARS-CoV2 pandemic led to drastic social restrictions globally. Early data suggest that women in science have been more adversely affected by these lockdowns than men, with relatively fewer scientific articles authored by women. However, these observations test broad populations with many potential causes of disparity. Australia presents a natural experimental condition where several states of similar demographics and disease impact had differing approaches in their social isolation strategies. The state of Victoria experienced 280 days of lockdowns from 2020 to 2021, whereas th

Rising quantitative productivity and shifting readership in academic publishing: Bibliometric insights from monkeypox literature.

The sudden spread of the monkeypox virus has been accompanied by an increase in the scientific interest in the virus. More than 1,400 PubMed-indexed documents have been authored by about 5,800 unique authors, averaging around 120 publications per month. This sheer rise in the number led us to explore the content published in the literature. We discovered more than 30% of the documents are Quantitative Productivity (QP) i.e., papers that illustrate the emerging trends of parachute concerns, modified salami tactics, cyclic recycling, and excellence in redundancy. In addition, we found few common

Caveat Medicus: Clinician experiences in publishing reports of serious oncology-associated adverse drug reactions.

Oncology-associated adverse drug/device reactions can be fatal. Some clinicians who treat single patients with severe oncology-associated toxicities have researched case series and published this information. We investigated motivations and experiences of select individuals leading such efforts. Clinicians treating individual patients who developed oncology-associated serious adverse drug events were asked to participate. Inclusion criteria included having index patient information, reporting case series, and being collaborative with investigators from two National Institutes of Health funded

Femoral cartilage thickness measurements in healthy individuals: learning, practicing and publishing with TURK-MUSCULUS.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Measurement of the femoral cartilage thickness by using in-vivo musculoskeletal ultrasonography (MSUS) has been previously shown to be a valid and reliable method in previous studies; however, to our best notice, normative data has not been provided before in the healthy population. The aim of our study was to provide normative data regarding femoral cartilage thicknesses of healthy individuals with collaborative use of MSUS. METHODS: This is across-sectional study run at Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Departments of 18 Secondary and Tertiary Centers in Turkey.

From 'publish or perish' to 'publish with purpose': perspectives from young adults with lived and living experience on transforming academic publishing in patient-oriented research.

BACKGROUND: This commentary article critically assesses the inclusion and recognition of young adults with lived and living experiences (YALLE) in academic publishing. Stemming from our involvement in a health research study, this analysis interrogates the disparity between the stated importance of YALLE contributions in health research and their actual recognition, specifically in academic publications, which serve as the principal "currency" in research. This tokenism limits the potential for their unique insights to substantially enrich the discourse and dissemination of knowledge. Set agai

Female Authorship Publishing Trends and Forecasting in Pediatric Urology: Are We Closer to Gender Equality?

OBJECTIVE: To review the literature of 5 pediatric urology topics and conduct gender based and forecasting analyses of first and corresponding authors. METHODS: A PubMed search was performed for hypospadias, hydronephrosis, vesicoureteral reflux, bladder and bowel dysfunction, and cryptorchidism over 3 decades from 1990 to 2019. The 50 most relevant "best match" papers from each decade were extracted by topic. Author gender, specialty, and advanced degrees, along with journal and publication variables were collected. Forecasting analyses were conducted through the Holt-Winters method. RESULT
