Immunohistological evaluation on respiratory lesions of pigs intranasally inoculated with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 1.

Nine-week-old pigs were inoculated intranasally with 6.10 X 10(3) (group 10(3)), 10(5) (group 10(5)) and 10(7) (group 10(7)) colony-forming unit of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App) serotype 1 designated HA-337 strain, respectively. One pig in group 10(5) and 2 pigs in group 10(7) died with dispnea and hemorrhagic pleuropneumonia within 20 to 48 hr post inoculation (PI). All pigs necropsied on 7 days in groups 10(5) and 10(7) had focal fibrous pleuropneumonia. Histologically, pulmonary lesions were classified into three stages; peracute, acute and subacute. Fatal cases in group 10(7) had p

Inhalation toxicity of chromium dioxide dust to rats after two years exposure.

Rats were exposed by inhalation to chromium dioxide (CrO2) dust at design concentrations of 0, 0.5 (stabilized and unstabilized, respectively) or 25 mg m-3 (stabilized) for 6 h day-1, 5 days week-1 for 2 years. No dust-exposure-related pathological changes were observed, other than lung lesions, in all exposed rats. There were no significant differences in pulmonary response between unstabilized and stabilized CrO2 at the 0.5 mg m-3 exposure level. The lungs showed minute dust deposition in the alveoli adjacent to the alveolar ducts, but maintained an intact general architecture. The pulmonary

[Effects of nasal respiration on the thermo-adaptive capacity of the airways].

Respiratory thermography characterizes the role of nasal respiration in the thermo-adaptive function of airways. During nasal inspiration the air temperature in alveoli is 1.5--2.0 degrees C higher than during oral inspiration not only in patients with chronic pulmonary diseases but also in healthy people. In this context, correction of nasal respiration in people with chronic pulmonary diseases should be considered as an efficient factor for preventing exacerbation of the diseases.

Alveolar cells under mechanical stressed niche: critical contributors to pulmonary fibrosis.

Pulmonary fibrosis arises from the repeated epithelial mild injuries and insufficient repair lead to over activation of fibroblasts and excessive deposition of extracellular matrix, which result in a mechanical stretched niche. However, increasing mechanical stress likely exists before the establishment of fibrosis since early micro injuries increase local vascular permeability and prompt cytoskeletal remodeling which alter cellular mechanical forces. It is noteworthy that COVID-19 patients with severe hypoxemia will receive mechanical ventilation as supportive treatment and subsequent patholo

Pulmonary emphysema: when more is less.

Pulmonary emphysema results from the loss of intricate alveolar architecture and progressive simplification of small and highly effective gas-exchanging units into large, inefficient cyst-like spaces. Because of the loss of alveolar gas-exchanging units and the capillary bed within them, blood oxygen levels eventually fall and pressures within the pulmonary circulation rise. Recent insights from genetically manipulated mouse models have refined our understanding of the molecular events that prevent or promote the development of pulmonary emphysema. Capitalizing on an improved molecular underst

Hypoplasia of the small pulmonary arteries in hypoplastic left heart syndrome with restrictive atrial septal defect.

BACKGROUND: Restrictive atrial septal defect (ASD) (including intact atrial septum [IAS]) has been reported to be a risk factor that negatively impacts survival in hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Although lymphangiectasia and "arterialization" of the veins of the lung in HLHS with restrictive ASD have been reported, they cannot fully explain the high mortality. We have introduced a new method of evaluating the development of the pulmonary vasculature in histological sections and used it to assess patients' lungs. We tested the hypothesis that the small pulmonary arteries (SPA), which a

[Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis in 2 Moroccan sisters].

The histories of two Moroccan sisters with pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis are described. Two years follow-up is available. The elder girl has no complaints, her two years younger sister becomes dyspnoeic on exercise. Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis is a rare condition, which occurs mostly as a familiary disease. On pathologic examination characteristic calcifications are found in the alveoli. The radiographic picture of the chest is quite typical. A short review of the literature is presented.

Hybrid Pulmonary Sequestration, Cystic Pulmonary Adenomatoid Malformation, and Dextrocardia: A Triple Whammy.

Pulmonary sequestration and cystic pulmonary adenomatoid malformation are rare congenital cystic disorders of the lungs. The presence of both the diseases in the same individual is therefore very uncommon. Pulmonary sequestration is a nonfunctional pulmonary tissue mass that derives its blood supply from systemic blood supply other than pulmonary circulation. Congenital cystic pulmonary adenomatoid malformation represents a mass consisting of abnormal bronchiolar air spaces and a deficiency of functional alveoli. This is the case report of a 9-year-old girl with intermittent fever, left-sided

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis: abnormal in vitro function of alveolar macrophages.

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis is characterized by the accumulation of granular proteinaceous material within the alveoli of the lung. It is well established that patients with pulmonary alveolar proteinosis have a high incidence of complicating pulmonary infections, which suggests that the function of the alveolar macrophages is abnormal. To investigate the function of these cells, they were obtained from two patients by pulmonary lavage with physiologic saline solution and were incubated with Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. The decline in viable organisms from the culture was measured and co

Massive pulmonary cryptococcosis in an immunocompetent patient.

A 64-year-old man presented with progressive dyspnea. The symptom of severe hypoxia requiring mechanical ventilator, and bilateral pulmonary infiltrates on the chest film led to the clinical diagnosis of adult respiratory distress syndrome. Autopsy demonstrated widespread cryptococci and mucinous material in alveoli with mild inflammatory response.

A 50-year-old woman with haemoptysis, cough and tachypnea: cholesterol pneumonia accompanying with pulmonary artery hypertension.

Lipoid pneumonia is an uncommon disease caused by the presence of lipid in the alveoli. Here we described a case of a 50-year-old woman with haemoptysis, cough and tachypnea, who was diagnosed with cholesterol pneumonia accompanying with pulmonary artery hypertension. The extremely high pulmonary artery pressure achieved, in this case, is alarming and should alert the physicians that the cholesterol pneumonia may be one of the underlying causes of pulmonary artery hypertension. After a treatment of methylprednisolone, her clinical symptoms were significantly improved, which suggested that ster

Histological characterisation of visceral changes in a patient with type 2 Gaucher disease treated with enzyme replacement therapy.

Gaucher disease is a lysosomal storage disease caused by deficiency of glucocerebrosidase and accumulation of glucocerebroside. Three major sub-types have been described, type 2 is an acute neurological form that exhibits serious general symptoms and poor prognosis, compared with the other types. This case was a girl diagnosed with type 2 Gaucher disease at 12months of age who presented with poor weight gain from infancy, stridor, hypertonia, hepatosplenomegaly, trismus and an eye movement disorder. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) was administered, but she had frequent myoclonus and developme

A case report of extralobar pulmonary sequestration in a dog.

Pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital anomaly in the veterinary literature. This malformation is characterized by a cystic mass of non-functioning primitive lung tissue that does not communicate with the tracheobronchial tree or with the pulmonary arteries. This article describes gross and histopathological characteristics of extralobar pulmonary sequestration in a dog. Grossly, a mass was observed in the left side of the thoracic cavity, closed to the caudal lobes of the lung, without communication with the tracheobronchial tree and the pulmonary arteries that was separated by pleural

[Clinical and pathologic comparison of adult respiratory distress syndrome and infant respiratory distress syndrome].

The authors compared the clinical and pathological findings between adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and infant respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS). In ARDS, the most common causes were injury, infection, shock and acidosis. The clinical course was longer. The weight of the lungs increased markedly, the hyaline membrane formation in the alveoli was late in the clinical course, and the degree of edema in the interstitium of the lungs and microthrombosis within the blood vessels was more serious. The pathogenesis of ARDS was related to the activation of the complements and neutrophil

[Pathogenic effects of titanium dioxide dust on the lung of dogs--a histopathological and ultrastructural study].

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) dust has generally been regarded as a "nuisance dust" in experimental animals and men. In this experiment, 16 dogs were exposed intratracheally to TiO2 dust for 9-15 months. The scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (SEM-EDAX), performed to identify the elemental composition of dust particles used in the study and in the focal lesions of the lungs, showed that dust particles were nearly pure titanium. Dust in the lung deposited mainly in the respiratory bronchioles and adjacent alveoli, with many alveoli filled by compacted dust particles

Case report. Pulmonary involvement in an adult male affected by type B Niemann-Pick disease.

We report the case of a 39-year-old male patient affected by type B Niemann-Pick disease, in whom pulmonary involvement became evident 15 years after the initial diagnosis. Pulmonary involvement was discovered incidentally during the evaluation of a dry cough and exertional dyspnoea which occurred in the context of an acute febrile, self-limiting illness. In this case, the pulmonary involvement is clinically mild, with minimal alteration of the diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DL(CO)), despite moderate fibrosis and widespread infiltration of both alveoli and interstitium by sea blue his
