BACKGROUND: Tobacco use significantly impacts health and economic sectors. In the Maldives, 4 out of 10 men smoke daily, despite anti-tobacco policies. The Maldives Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) shows fluctuating cigarette smoking prevalence among secondary school students: 6.9% (2004), 3.8% (2007), 4.3% (2011), and 4.7% (2019). No studies have investigated smoking prevalence and attitudes toward anti-smoking policies among higher-secondary students in Addu City. This study examines smoking habits, susceptibility, and attitudes toward anti-smoking regulations to support policy development

Background: Early childhood caries is a serious public health problem. When caries extend to involve the pulp, various forms of pulp treatment are tried to stimulate tooth repair. Although pulpotomy is the treatment of choice for vital primary tooth pulp exposure but there is a trend among many dentists to perform pulpectomies in vital primary incisors. This study aimed to assess the effect of pulpotomy and pulpecomy in treatment of carious vital pulp exposure in primary incisors. Methods: We searched Pubmed and Cochrane library databases up to March, 2018, OpenGrey for grey literature and Cl

BACKGROUND: Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome is a congenital abnormality of the heart. Patients with this syndrome and multiple dental caries with pulp exposure may require comprehensive dental treatment under general anesthesia. Pulpectomy is performed in primary teeth with pulp expose. This treatment in anterior teeth requires palatal access and the majority there is no good visibility, requiring more time to perform. Therefore, this case aimed to demonstrate a pulp chamber opening alternative in pulpectomies in a child with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

Persistent hemorrhage after complete amputation of coronal pulp is a common clinical finding during pulpotomy procedure in primary teeth. These teeth are best managed with pulpectomy, but they have hyperemic pulp with some remaining vital tissue. Good chemico-biomechanical preparation of primary canals cannot guarantee complete removal of this vital tissue from inaccessible areas. Use of Ca(OH) ₂ containing root filling pastes in vital pulp tissue can cause accelerated resorption of primary roots. The possible mechanism behind such extensive root resorption is discussed with review of literatu

Various root canal filling materials are used to preserve a pulpally involved carious primary tooth. But there is no single material so far available to fulfill all the requirements of an ideal root canal filling material for a primary tooth. Hence this study was undertaken to evaluate clinically and radiographically the efficacy of three obturating materials - Calcium hydroxide with Iodoform (METAPEX), Zinc Oxide Eugenol with Iodoform (RC FILL) and Zinc Oxide Eugenol and Calcium hydroxide with Iodoform (ENDOFLAS) for a period of 9 months. Results show ENDOFLAS gave an overall success rate of

Antibacterial efficacy of formocresol, 2% gluteraldehyde and iodine-potassium iodide was assessed by obtaining cultures at consecutive appointments in multiple visit pulpectomies in primary molars. Formocresol and 2% gluteraldehyde were more effective as intracanal medicaments and caused significant reduction in the counts of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms, thereby supporting the need for placing intracanal medicaments with antibacterial properties, in multiple visit pulpectomies in primary molars.

To evaluate postoperative pain following emergency pulpectomy in permanent teeth diagnosed with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis and to compare outcomes with or without adjunctive low-level laser therapy (LLLT). This parallel, randomized, single-blind clinical trial included 70 patients with permanent teeth diagnosed with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 35 each): the experimental group received gallium-aluminum-arsenide laser therapy (808 nm, 100 mW), while the control group received no laser intervention. Postoperative pain was assessed u

INTRODUCTION: Both pulpotomy and pulpectomy are indicated in deciduous teeth with carious pulp exposure. Pulpotomy is recommended for treating carious pulp exposure in primary molars with the development of dental biomaterials. However, it is difficult to determine the severity of pulpitis as children frequently have difficulty communicating their clinical symptoms and there is no objective diagnostic method to assess pulpal status. Thus, therapeutic interventions for deciduous teeth with carious pulp involvement are controversial in clinical applications. This study compared the clinical and

BACKGROUND: To retrospectively investigate the success rate of primary-molar pulpectomy performed under general anaesthesia and the potential risk factors that affect the 24-month success rate.
METHODS: The case data and two-year follow-up records of children (aged 3-6 years) who received pulpectomy in primary molars performed under general anaesthesia were reviewed and assessed. Potential risk factors included age, gender, decayed-missing-filled teeth, endodontic diagnosis, tooth location, and postobturation sealing of the pulp chamber floor with MTA. With a two-year follow-up period, the ou

Loss of pulp due to caries and pulpitis leads to loss of teeth and reduced quality of life. Thus, there is an unmet need for regeneration of pulp. A promising approach is stem cell therapy. Autologous pulp stem/progenitor (CD105(+)) cells were transplanted into a root canal with stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) after pulpectomy in mature teeth with complete apical closure in dogs. The root canal was successfully filled with regenerated pulp including nerves and vasculature by day 14, followed by new dentin formation along the dentinal wall. The newly regenerated tissue was significantly l

OBJECTIVES: Calcium Hydroxide/Iodoform pastes (CH-I) are used for pulpectomy in primary teeth. To alleviate the rapid degradation of CH-I, polyphosphate (poly P) was incorporated with CH to form a modified paste (CH-PP-I), which was evaluated against CH-I and a commercial paste (Vitapex®).
METHODS: Vitapex, CH-I and CH-PP-I were compared for injectability, viscosity, pH, Ca2 + release and solubility. Antimicrobial properties of the pastes were tested using Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis). Their effects on human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs) were explored using CCK-8, Edu and TUNEL a

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of intrapulpal crushed ice compared to intrapulpal lidocaine as a supplementary anesthetic during pulpectomy in primary second molars of children aged 5-10 years. The goal was to assess whether crushed ice could serve as a less painful, effective alternative to intrapulpal local anesthesia when the inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) alone is insufficient in cases of symptomatic irreversible pulpitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted among 52 children fulfilling the inclusion criter
