The CT and median somatosensory and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (SEP and BAEP) were studied in 80 patients with spontaneous putaminal hemorrhage for their values in the early prediction of functional outcome. The CT scan was performed within 2 days and EPs within a week after the onset of symptoms. The activities of daily living was assessed at 6 months. Patients with good functional recovery had the following findings: 1) the hemorrhage had not involved the thalamus or the posterior limb of the internal capsule; 2) the SEPs were normal or had prolonged central conduction time; and 3)

BACKGROUND: The development of minimally invasive endoscopic neurosurgery has enabled widespread application of endoscopic surgery via the ipsilateral transfrontal approach for putaminal hematoma evacuation. However, this approach is unsuitable for putaminal hematomas that extend into the temporal lobe. We adopted the endoscopic trans-middle temporal gyrus approach, instead of the conventional surgical approach, for the management of these complicated cases and determined its safety and feasibility.
METHODS: Twenty patients with putaminal hemorrhage underwent surgical treatment at the Shinshu

A 56-year-old man with a left medial temporal lobe hematoma from the left putaminal hemorrhage presented with complex visual hallucinations in the right quadrantanopsic field. In the right superior quadrantanopsic field, he saw colored and formed hallucinations of plants, bamboo thickets and a stature of bodhisattva. Most of these hallucinations were what he had actually seen before. The visual hallucinations disappeared when he gazed them with saccadic eye movements. EEG showed no epileptic discharges. MRI revealed hematoma from the lower putamen to the medial temporal lobe including amygdala

BACKGROUND: Horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis (HGPPS) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the ROBO3 gene, resulting in a critical absence of crossing fibers in the brainstem.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a patient with ipsilateral hemiparesis caused by putaminal hemorrhage who had a history of horizontal gaze paralysis and scoliosis since childhood. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography confirmed the presence of uncrossed corticospinal tracts. Sequence analysis of the entire ROBO3 coding regions revealed a novel nonsense mutation.

BACKGROUND: Rebleeding is a prognostic factor in hemorrhagic moyamoya disease (MMD). This report describes a case of cerebrospinal fluid over-drainage from a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt after an intraventricular hemorrhage that may have contributed to a putaminal hemorrhage.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 51-year-old woman with a prior intraventricular hemorrhage and moyamoya diagnosis who had not undergone revascularization surgery and was neurologically stable. She was readmitted in August 2023 with recurrent intraventricular hemorrhage and underwent shunt placement for hydrocephal

Relationships among language ability, arcuate fasciculus and lesion volume were investigated by use of diffusion tensor tractography in patients with putaminal hemorrhage. Thirty-three right-handed patients within six weeks of hemorrhage onset were recruited. Correlation of the aphasia quotient with subset (fluency, comprehension, repetition, naming) scores, diffusion tensor tractography parameters and lesion volume of patients, aphasia quotient (r = 0.446) with subset (naming: r = 0.489) score had moderate positive correlations with fractional anisotropy of the left arcuate fasciculus. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of brain perfusion measured by arterial spin-labeling magnetic resonance imaging (ASL-MRI) in cerebral hemorrhages.
METHODS: Brain blood flow values (CBF-ASL values) for cerebral and cerebellar hemispheres and segmented cerebral regions were measured by ASL-MRI in 19 putaminal hemorrhage patients and 20 thalamic hemorrhage patients in acute or subacute stages. We assessed the lateralities of CBF-ASL values and the relationships between CBF-ASL values and other imaging findings and clinical manifestations.

We encountered a case of auditory agnosia restricted to environmental sounds, which was associated with the development of bilateral subcortical lesions after suffering a bilateral putaminal hemorrhage. The patient had a history of a putaminal hemorrhage on her left side without any major disability. Three years later, she suffered a putaminal hemorrhage on the other side. The clinical picture started with cortical deafness, then changed to generalized auditory agnosia for verbal and environmental sounds, and finally developed into auditory agnosia confined to the perception of environmental s

The distortion and stress distribution in the brain caused by putaminal hemorrhage were estimated by computer stimulation using the finite element method (FEM). The two-dimensional model of a single cerebral hemisphere contained cortex, white matter, caudate nucleus, lenticular nucleus, thalamus, falx, and lateral ventricle. Five types of intracerebral hemorrhage were modeled at different locations in the lenticular nucleus. The models generated putaminal hematomas of various shapes influenced by the location of the bleeding points. Hematomas caused deformation of the brain, collapse of the la

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to examine the clinical and imaging manifestations of methanol toxicity during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to review existing studies on this topic. The most common cause of methanol intoxication is methanol-adulterated liquor. The primary metabolite of methanol, formic acid, is responsible for pathological changes. Symptoms typically present within 6-24 h of consumption and can include visual disturbances, acute neurological symptoms, and gastrointestinal issues. During the initial year of the COVID-19 pandemic, methanol poisoning cases increased signif

The influence of site of hemorrhage on presentation, clinical profile, hospital course, and outcome was examined in 225 patients with intracerebral hemorrhage in the NINDS Stroke Data Bank. Mode of presentation differed by hemorrhage site (coma at onset was most typical of pontine hemorrhage and headache with vomiting was most typical of cerebellar hemorrhage, whereas onset of focal deficit sometimes with headache was typical of lobar and and basal ganglionic hemorrhages). Distinct clinical profiles were found for cerebellar (ataxia, drowsiness, and horizontal gaze paresis), pontine (quadripar

A 55-year-old Japanese woman with a history of hypertension and right putaminal hemorrhage developed simultaneous hemorrhages in the left thalamus and putamen and died 24 h later. There were no vascular anomalies in the brain. Synaptophysin immunostaining combined with eosin azure 50 (EA50) staining clearly identified the hematoma and the surrounding brain structures. In the right cerebral hemisphere, a cystic lesion as a sequela of the usual type of hypertensive putaminal hematoma was evident. In the left cerebral hemisphere, two fresh hematomas were evident. One was a thalamic hematoma, whic

INTRODUCTION: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating hemorrhagic event and is associated with high mortality or severe neurological sequelae. Age-associated differences in hematoma location for nonlobar ICH are not well known. The aims of the present study were to elucidate the relationship between age and hematoma location and to assess the differences in small-vessel disease (SVD) burden as a potential surrogate marker for longstanding hypertension among various hematoma locations.
METHODS: From September 2014 through July 2019, consecutive patients with acute, spontaneous ICH were

Hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (HICH) was once thought to be a one-time event with very rare recurrence, but recent studies have revealed that the recurrent hemorrhage due to hypertension is not unusual. The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical characteristics of HICH among Taiwanese. From June 1988 to December 1999, 1421 HICH patients were admitted to our hospital. Among them, 68 patients (4.8%) had recurrent HICH. We reviewed their medical records and computed tomographic findings. There were 46 males and 22 females (M/F = 2.1) with a mean age of 59.9 +/- 11.9 years at

A 51-year-old male with moyamoya disease had experienced a left putaminal hemorrhage 14 years previously, in 1983. Left encephalo-duro-arterio-synangiosis (EDAS) was performed in that year. The left putaminal hemorrhage reoccurred in 1990 and in 1994. Left superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery anastomosis (STA-MCA anastomosis) was performed. He was symptom free after the surgery. However, he suddenly suffered from deafness in 1997, when computerized tomography (CT) revealed the right temporal subcortical hemorrhage. Deafness continued for three days. It gradually improved and comp

We examined the effectiveness of high colloid oncotic pressure (COP) therapy to suppress and/or reduce brain edema associated with putaminal hemorrhage of patients whose clinical grades were grade 3 or 4a classified according to the Japanese neurological grading for putaminal hemorrhage. In the treated group of 11 patients, 25% albumin solution was intravenously administered (50-100 ml/day) with additional use of furosemide (20-40 mg/day) following hematoma removal. The serum COP was maintained at 25-30 mmHg for 2 weeks. In the untreated group of 11 patients, the COP therapy was not applied fo

Vitamin C deficiency, also known as scurvy, causes abnormalities in connective tissues and varied symptoms. We describe a patient with putaminal hemorrhage, a very rare presentation of scurvy. A 39-year-old man presented with weakness in the left arm and left leg. Right putaminal hemorrhage was initially diagnosed, and he underwent evacuation of the intracerebral hemorrhage. Scurvy was suspected when repeated physical examinations revealed a bleeding tendency and multiple untreated dental caries, missing teeth, and gingivitis. A diagnosis of scurvy was further supported by the patient's histor

We studied 151 patients aged 15 to 44 years with non-traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage admitted to a large public hospital over a 10-year period. Patients were evaluated for an association of death or severe disability after the stroke with the following variables: sex, age, location of the hemorrhage, and possible etiology. Lobar hemorrhages were found in 63 (41.7%) patients, putaminal hemorrhages in 39 (25.8%), posterior fossa hemorrhages in 24 (15.9%), and hemorrhages in other locations in 25 (16.6%). A possible etiology was determined in 109 (72.2%) patients. Hypertensive arteriolopathy a
