Health expectations : an international journal of public participation in health care and health policy2026eng
BACKGROUND: Patient and public involvement (PPI) is increasingly promoted in health services research, yet empirical evidence remains limited on how participatory governance is operationalised in research practices.
METHODS: This qualitative study explored patient partners' experiences of involvement in the PaRole OncO France (PROOF) research project, a multicentre participatory action research (PAR) project aimed at adapting, implementing and evaluating a peer support intervention in oncology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with patient partners involved in project governance. Dat

BACKGROUND: Core outcome sets (COS) standardise the outcomes reported in clinical trials and research, reducing outcome heterogeneity and enabling evidence synthesis. Most neonatal COS have been developed in high-income country (HIC) contexts and may not reflect the priorities, health system capacities, or disease burden of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Kenya's neonatal mortality rate remains high at 21 per 1000 live births, yet no COS exists for neonatal care and research in Kenya or, more broadly, in sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to develop a contextually appropriate COS f

This study aimed to evaluate the multifaceted and complex modality of brace compliance by drawing a comprehensive model with a qualitative approach.
METHODS: This study employed the grounded theory methodology to systematically explore and interpret factors affecting brace compliance, uncovering patterns and themes that influence treatment success. Data collection involved nonrandom convenience samp

BACKGROUND: Cancer remains a global health concern, with nearly 20 million new cancer cases and approximately 10 million cancer-related deaths reported in 2020.An increasing number of individuals with advanced-stage cancer are likely to confront the reality of mortality. In China, cancer-related deaths hold the top position among factors contributing to resident mortality, accounting for nearly a quarter of all deaths. Patients with advanced-stage cancer contend with both physical challenges such as pain, physical decline, and functional impairments, as well as psychological issues including de

In this article, we explore ethical issues of Deaf people's engagement in research. To focus on the perspectives of Deaf people, we investigated existing qualitative and mixed methods research within a qualitative evidence synthesis. Our synthesis is based on a systematic database search (Scopus, PubMed) and reference check of included papers which resulted in 27 eligible papers. We analyzed the data using thematic synthesis and developed 5 analytical themes. The results present research as a struggle for Deaf people and emphasize the need for changes regarding recognition of Deaf research in

Kentucky ranks first in the nation in cancer incidence and mortality rates, with the greatest burden of disease being in the Appalachian region. The cancer disparities in the Appalachian region of the state are tied to high poverty rates, low education attainment, low health care access, and high rates of poor health behaviors, such as tobacco use. The University of Kentucky (UK) Markey Cancer Center (MCC) developed the Appalachian Career Training in Oncology (ACTION) program to address the cancer and education disparities in the region. ACTION is a two-year program that focuses on cancer educ

Longitudinal qualitative research can provide rich understanding of the life circumstances of vulnerable groups who experience health inequities, of whether, how and why these circumstances change, and of how these circumstances and processes of change impact health. But, this rich understanding is not automatic and requires systematic and thoughtful approaches to data collection and analysis. The purpose of this paper is to describe two longitudinal qualitative studies embedded in mixed-methods studies of social determinants of HIV in the United States and the Dominican Republic. We compare t

INTRODUCTION: The growing prevalence of chronic kidney disease has led to an increased demand for kidney replacement therapies. Although a kidney transplant is the preferred treatment for patients, many patients require dialysis temporarily before receiving a transplant or are unsuitable transplant candidates requiring long-term dialysis. Home hemodialysis (home HD) is cost-effective and associated with improved patient outcomes; however, its adoption remains low. There is a need to understand the factors that may support or hinder the use of home HD. Accordingly, a systematic review of the qu

BACKGROUND: As the quality of life of stoma patients has become a research hotspot, sexual health as an integral part of patients' lives has received more and more attention. However, there is a lack of comprehensive reviews on the sexual experiences of patients with stomas. This study aims to synthesize the qualitative literature on the subjective experience of stoma patients' sexual life, to identify their sexual needs, and to provide evidence for the content and methods of sexual health interventions for healthcare professionals.

Purpose: Although relatively unknown within the field of rehabilitation, qualitative longitudinal research is ideal for rehabilitation and disability research that aims to understand health-related challenges over time. We describe the strengths and challenges of longitudinal qualitative research using two concrete examples.Materials and methods: Qualitative longitudinal research often involves in-depth interviews of participants on multiple occasions over time. Analytic approaches are complex, summarizing data both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. We present two detailed analytic approac

BACKGROUND: Despite the existence of safe and effective vaccines, rabies disease still causes an estimated 59,000 human deaths a year in the endemic areas in Asia and Africa. These numbers reflect severe drawbacks regarding the implementation of PrEP and PEP in endemic settings, such as lack of political will and low priority given to rabies. Since these contextual factors have proven to be persistent, there is an urgency to improve current strategies or develop novel approaches in order to control rabies disease in the future.
METHODS/FINDINGS: This study aimed to identify and systematically

Mixed methods research is increasingly being promoted in the health sciences as a way to gain more comprehensive understandings of how social processes and individual behaviours shape human health. Mixed methods research most commonly combines qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis strategies. Often, integrating findings from multiple methods is assumed to confirm or validate the findings from one method with the findings from another, seeking convergence or agreement between methods. Cases in which findings from different methods are congruous are generally thought of as id

CONTEXT: Medical Education (ME) research seeks to understand and improve teaching and learning in medicine. It often explores sensitive topics related to the culture of medical education, such as the hidden curriculum, power dynamics, discrimination, bias, cultural competence, ethical dilemmas, and clinical errors. Expanding available ME research methods, we introduce qualitative story completion.
APPROACH: Qualitative story completion is a research method originating in psychology, where participants are given the start of a fictional story (a "story stem") and are asked to complete the stor

OBJECTIVES: This study presents a protocol that integrates conversational artificial intelligence into qualitative data analysis to support rapid, decision-oriented descriptive analysis in public health settings. The protocol was developed during an applied project with Hamilton County Public Health that analyzed interviews with the next of kin of overdose decedents to inform local strategies. The objective is to describe the protocol, its safeguards for data familiarization and human verification, and its practical application in a real-world case.
METHODS: Evaluators designed and tested man
