Application of a semi-automated dicentric scoring system in triage and monitoring occupational radiation exposure.

The dicentric chromosome assay (DCA) is considered the gold standard for radiation biodosimetry, but it is limited by its long dicentric scoring time and need for skilled scorers. The automation of scoring dicentrics has been considered a strategy to overcome the constraints of DCA. However, the studies on automated scoring methods are limited compared to those on conventional manual DCA. Our study aims to assess the performance of a semi-automated scoring method for DCA using ex vivo and in vivo irradiated samples. Dose estimations of 39 blind samples irradiated ex vivo and 35 industrial radi

Cytokinesis block micronucleus assay in field plants for monitoring radiation-induced genotoxicity of the environment.

Effective biomonitoring for detection of radiation-induced genotoxicity of contaminants in natural environments involves testing of field plants for cytogenetic changes. To increase the efficiency and precision of cytogenetic analyses of field plants that have naturally high individual variability, an improved micronucleus assay is proposed that employs a cytokinesis block technique similar to the lymphocyte test system used in mammals. In seed embryonic meristems of the Japanese cedar, application of a methylxanthine derivative, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), was found to be effective in

Geometrical analysis for motion monitoring of rigid bodies with optical surface scanning in radiation oncology.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Surface guided radiotherapy can be used to improve patient setup and for accurate intra-fraction motion monitoring in correspondence to the isocenter. For a clinical relevant motion analysis the actual displacement of the entire clinical target volume (CTV) is necessary. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a novel assessment method for intra-fraction motion for rigid body structures based on motion data and a geometrical analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A threshold value on the volume coverage (VC(t)) of the CTV by the planning target volume (PTV) was propo

TWO NEW SINGLE-EXPOSURE, MULTI-DETECTOR NEUTRON SPECTROMETERS FOR RADIATION PROTECTION APPLICATIONS IN WORKPLACE MONITORING.

This communication describes two new instruments, based on multiple active thermal neutron detectors arranged within a single moderator, that permit to unfold the neutron spectrum (from thermal to hundreds of MeV) and to determine the corresponding integral quantities with only one exposure. This makes them especially advantageous for neutron field characterisation and workplace monitoring in neutron-producing facilities. One of the devices has spherical geometry and nearly isotropic response, the other one has cylindrical symmetry and it is only sensitive to neutrons incident along the cylind

Cytogenetic monitoring of hospital workers occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation using the micronucleus centromere assay.

A cytogenetic study was performed in lymphocytes of hospital workers occupationally exposed to X- and gamma-rays using the micronucleus centromere assay. A comparison of the data for the exposed group and an age-matched group of non-exposed hospital workers showed a significant (P < 0.05) increase in centromere-positive micronuclei for the radiation workers, while no effect on centromere-negative micronuclei was present. The observed systematic increase in micronucleus frequency with age was mainly due to increased chromosome loss, reflected in the centromere-positivity of the micronuclei. The

Micro-endoscopic In Vivo Monitoring in the Blood and Lymphatic Vessels of the Oral Cavity after Radiation Therapy.

Radiotherapy, although used worldwide for the treatment of head, neck, and oral cancers, causes acute complications, including effects on vasculature and immune response due to cellular stress. Thus, the ability to diagnose side-effects and monitor vascular response in real-time during radiotherapy would be highly beneficial for clinical and research applications. In this study, recently-developed fluorescence micro-endoscopic technology provides non-invasive, high-resolution, real-time imaging at the cellular level. Moreover, with the application of high-resolution imaging technologies and mi

Wireless, battery-free, flexible, miniaturized dosimeters monitor exposure to solar radiation and to light for phototherapy.

Exposure to electromagnetic radiation can have a profound impact on human health. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun causes skin cancer. Blue light affects the body's circadian melatonin rhythm. At the same time, electromagnetic radiation in controlled quantities has beneficial use. UV light treats various inflammatory skin conditions, and blue light phototherapy is the standard of care for neonatal jaundice. Although quantitative measurements of exposure in these contexts are important, current systems have limited applicability outside of laboratories because of an unfavorable set of fa

[Development of a monitor for quantifying personal eye exposure to visible and ultraviolet radiation and its application in epidemiology].

OBJECTIVE: Eye diseases including cataract, keratitis and pterygium have been reported to be sun-exposure-related. The association between macular degeneration and blue light has also been discussed. Moreover, it is hypothesized that retinal exposure to blue light may influence the human circadian rhythm. However, no monitoring devices exist that can measure eye exposure to visible and ultraviolet (UV) radiation over time. To measure the exact dose at specific times, we have developed a novel sensing system (ray-sensing glass system: RaySeG). METHODS: RaySeG can continuously measure and recor

Reactivity to UV Radiation Exposure Monitoring Using Personal Exposure Devices for Skin Cancer Prevention: Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Emerging UV radiation (UVR) monitoring devices may present an opportunity to integrate such technology into skin cancer prevention interventions. However, little is known about the effects of using a wearable UVR monitor on adults' and children's sun protection-related behaviors and attitudes (eg, cancer worry and perceived risk). Understanding the potential role of reactivity and seasonal effects will help inform the use of objective monitors in the context of skin cancer prevention research, including intervention studies. Monitoring DNA damage following radiation exposure using cytokinesis-block micronucleus method and alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis.

The structure of DNA can be damaged as a result of exposure to ionizing radiation. Determining the frequency of chromosome aberrations is a well-known method to estimate the dose of radiation received in acute and chronic exposures. In the past few years, cytogenetic analysis has benefited from the development of new techniques, such as the micronucleus (MN) and comet assays, which provide additional information concerning repair capacity after exposure. The present article discusses the use of peripheral blood lymphocytes for the assessment of populations exposed to ionizing radiation. Also d
