[Post-radiation effect on the interhemispheric asymmetry in EEG and thermography characteristics].

Complex analysis of EEG and thermographic parameters carried out in 10 healthy subjects and 34 patients, Chernobyl clean-up participants revealed a correlation between EEG and brain temperature changes in the baseline state and during mental arithmetic. During cognitive activity the maximal increase in the average EEG coherence and temperature shifts in healthy subjects were observed in the left frontotemporal and right parietotemporal areas. In patients changes in both parameters under study were most pronounced, the interhemispheric relations were impaired. The visual analysis revealed "flat

Hematologic consequences of exposure to ionizing radiation.

From the early 1900s, it has been known that ionizing radiation (IR) impairs hematopoiesis through a variety of mechanisms. IR exposure directly damages hematopoietic stem cells and alters the capacity of bone marrow stromal elements to support and/or maintain hematopoiesis in vivo and in vitro. Exposure to IR induces dose-dependent declines in circulating hematopoietic cells not only through reduced bone marrow production, but also by redistribution and apoptosis of mature formed elements of the blood. Recently, the importance of using lymphocyte depletion kinetics to provide a "crude" dose e

Towards a standardization of biological dosimetry by cytogenetics.

When individuals are accidentally overexposed to ionising radiations, follow-up investigations may include dose assessment by cytogenetics. Scoring of unstable chromosome aberrations (dicentrics, centric rings and acentrics) in peripheral blood lymphocytes is regarded as the most specific method to estimate the exposure dose. It has acquired, in some countries, a medico-legal recognition. Paradoxically, there is no universally adopted technique and so important variations occur in methods and these may influence the quality of results. The only published documents supplying some standardizatio

Performance Testing of Criticality Accident Detectors with the Godiva Burst Reactor.

Criticality accident detectors are required for all operations involving fissile materials in which a criticality accident can occur and cause personnel to receive unacceptable exposure to radiation (ANSI/ANS 8.3-R2012). Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy Y-12 National Security Complex tested six criticality accident detectors and eight Portable Radiation Detection Instruments (PRDIs) to verify their performance under actual criticality conditions. The tests were performed by Los Alamos National Laboratory using the Godiva critical assembly located at the National Criticality Experiments

Evaluating the Radiation From Accidental Exposure During a Nondestructive Testing Event.

Industrial radiography is a common nondestructive testing (NDT) method used in various industries. An investigation was conducted for a 1999 incident in Taiwan where two workers (Operators A and B) were accidently exposed to an unshielded Ir source while conducting industrial radiography. Operators A and B experienced acute close-range radiation exposure to a source of Ir for 3 h at a strength of 2.33 × 10 Bq. The health of mammary glands, bone marrow, thyroid glands, eyes, and genital organs of these two workers after radiation exposure was examined. Subsequently, Operator A experienced sever

Radiation accidents and their management: emphasis on the role of nuclear medicine professionals.

Large-scale radiation accidents are few in number, but those that have occurred have subsequently led to strict regulation in most countries. Here, different accident scenarios involving exposure to radiation have been reviewed. A triage of injured persons has been summarized and guidance on management has been provided in accordance with the early symptoms. Types of casualty to be expected in atomic blasts have been discussed. Management at the scene of an accident has been described, with explanation of the role of the radiation protection officer, the nature of contaminants, and monitoring

Overview of exposure to and effects from radionuclides in terrestrial and marine environments.

The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, precipitated by the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck the northeastern coast of Japan in March 2011, has raised concerns about potential impacts to terrestrial and marine environments from radionuclides released into the environment. A preliminary understanding of the potential ecological impacts from radionuclides can be ascertained from observations and data developed following previous environmental incidents elsewhere in the world. This article briefly summarizes how biota experience exposure to ionizing rad

Very high mutation rate in offspring of Chernobyl accident liquidators.

Exposure to ionizing radiation has long been suspected to increase mutation load in humans. Nevertheless, such events as atomic bombing seem not to have yielded significant genetic defects. The Chernobyl accident created a different, long-term exposure to radiation. Clean-up teams (or 'liquidators') of the Chernobyl reactor are among those who received the highest doses, presumably in some combination of acute and chronic forms. In this study, children born to liquidator families (currently either in the Ukraine or Israel) conceived after (CA) parental exposure to radiation were screened for t

[Results of cytogenetic studies of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident].

The selected results of the cytogenetic studies of the Chernobyl accident consequences were summarised. The chromosomal aberrations were used as a method of biodosimetry for a dose assessment for victims during the initial period after the Chernobyl accident. A good correlation between doses calculated based on chromosomal aberrations (dicentrics) and severity of acute radiation syndrome observed in clinic was found. The biodosimetry based on conventional cytogenetic technique (dicentrics) has been unsuccessful for various groups (rehabilitation workers, evacuees, inhabitants of contaminated a

Albinism and phenotype of barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) from Chernobyl.

The effects of mutation on phenotypic expression are supposed to be mainly deleterious because mutations disrupt the expression of genes that function relatively well under current environmental conditions. Thus, mutations are assumed to give rise to deviant phenotypes that are generally selected against. Radioactive contamination in the Chernobyl region of Ukraine is associated with a significant increase by a factor two to 10 in mutation rate in microsatellite markers of the barn swallow, Hirundo rustica. Barn swallows from Chernobyl had a temporally constant, elevated frequency of partial a

The psychosocial aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster in an area of relatively low contamination.

INTRODUCTION: There has been relatively little attention paid to the mid- and long-term effects of large-scale disasters, particularly their effects on children and young people. At the present time, the impact of the Chernobyl catastrophe on the daily lives of the affected population may include one of strong psychological stress due to uncertainty about ultimate health outcomes. Persons in the Chernobyl region in specific areas of low contamination may be affected similarly. This investigation assesses radiation concerns and attitudes about health and government information, nine years after

An independent review and prioritization of past radionuclide and chemical releases from the Los Alamos National Laboratory--implications for future dose reconstruction studies.

From 1999 through 2010, a team of scientists and engineers systematically reviewed approximately eight million classified and unclassified documents at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) that describe historical off-site releases of radionuclides and chemicals in order to determine the extent to which a full-scale dose reconstruction for releases is warranted and/or feasible. As a part of this effort, a relative ranking of historical airborne and waterborne radionuclide releases from LANL was established using priority index (PI) values that were calculated from estimated annual quantities

[From Chernobyl to Morsleben--a public health observation].

On April 26, 1986, a serious reactor accident occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A total radioactivity of 2 x 10(18) becquerel, i.e. 3.5% of the reactor inventory were released spreading throughout Europe. Radioactive tracers were iodine 131 (with a half-life of 8 days) and caesium 137 (with a half-life of 30 years). Measurements made in Magdeburg by the Institute of Hygiene on May 5th after a heavy thunderstorm indicated a considerable radioactive contamination. Measurements revealed 75,000 bq/kg in grasses, 44,000 bq/litre in storm water and 40,000 bq/kg in garden soil, however,

Regulatory Overview and Considerations for Medical Countermeasures Developed for Radiological/Nuclear Incident Responses.

After the terrorist attacks on September 11 and the anthrax attacks in 2001, the United States Government (USG) implemented several pieces of legislation to enable the federal government to prepare for future threats, including managing and funding product development of medical countermeasures (MCMs). The Project BioShield Act of 20041 and the Pandemic and All Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA) of 20062 (with reauthorizations in 20133 and 20194) described and fine-tuned the scope and mission of different agencies in this effort. The Department of Homeland Security is charged with issuing materi

Development of an enhanced operational capacity for a laboratory using triage-mode based biodosimetry.

PURPOSE: In case of an accidental or malevolent radiological event involving a large number of potential victims, fast and correct classification in terms of level of exposure is of utmost importance, not only for those that require specific medical treatment, but also for those that were not exposed. Our goal was to develop a system allowing to classify as many potential victims as possible in our laboratory by using the reference cytogenetic biodosimetry assay. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A system was created with a theoretical classification of 320 individuals 13 days after sample reception by

Early-response biological dosimetry--recommended countermeasure enhancements for mass-casualty radiological incidents and terrorism.

The effective medical management of a suspected acute radiation overexposure incident necessitates recording dynamic medical data, measuring appropriate radiation bioassays, and estimating dose from dosimeters and radioactivity assessments in order to provide diagnostic information to the treating physician and a dose assessment for personnel radiation protection records. The accepted generic multiparameter and early-response approach includes measuring radioactivity and monitoring the exposed individual; observing and recording prodromal signs/symptoms and erythema; obtaining complete blood c

Medical response framework for catastrophic burn and radiation mass casualties after a potential Ukraine nuclear event.

With the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, clinicians in Ukraine were urgently faced with expanding burn capabilities to hospitals that were not designated burn centers. In response, international humanitarian groups and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including national agencies, international burn societies, and many authors of this manuscript, hailed the call for help. One of the biggest concerns identified was the increasing risk of damage to nuclear reactors and powerplants during military operations, and the possible use of tactical nuclear weapons by Russian forces, t
