The application of fractal analysis to mammographic tissue classification.

As a first step in determining the efficacy of using computers to assist in diagnosis of medical images, an investigation has been conducted which utilizes the patterns, or textures, in the images. To be of value, any computer scheme must be able to recognize and differentiate the various patterns. An obvious example of this in mammography is the recognition of tumorous tissue and non-malignant abnormal tissue from normal parenchymal tissue. We have developed a pattern recognition technique which uses features derived from the fractal nature of the image. Further, we are able to develop mathem

Localized detection and classification of abnormalities on FFDM and tomosynthesis examinations rated under an FROC paradigm.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to assess diagnostic performance when retrospectively interpreting full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and breast tomosynthesis examinations under a free-response receiver operating characteristic (FROC) paradigm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed FROC analysis of a previously reported study in which eight experienced radiologists interpreted 125 examinations, including 35 with verified cancers. The FROC paradigm involves detecting, locating, and rating each suspected abnormality. Radiologists reviewed and rated both FFDM alone and a combined displa

YOLO-LXR: An Enhanced Model for Pathology Detection in Chest X-Rays.

Algorithms for object detection, particularly those based on YOLO, have demonstrated impressive effectiveness in achieving a balance between accuracy and speed. Their use in medical imaging has shown promise, but remains underexplored. In this study, a YOLO-like model is proposed that focuses on detecting lung pathologies in X-ray images, is based on YOLOv5, and uses Squeeze-and-Excite and Residual Blocks. It outperforms most YOLO and YOLO-like architectures in terms of accuracy, and compared to YOLOv5, experiments showed an increase in recall and mAP@50 of 3.3% and 1.5%, respectively. The sug

UniChest: Conquer-and-Divide Pre-Training for Multi-Source Chest X-Ray Classification.

Vision-Language Pre-training (VLP) that utilizes the multi-modal information to promote the training efficiency and effectiveness, has achieved great success in vision recognition of natural domains and shown promise in medical imaging diagnosis for the Chest X-Rays (CXRs). However, current works mainly pay attention to the exploration on single dataset of CXRs, which locks the potential of this powerful paradigm on larger hybrid of multi-source CXRs datasets. We identify that although blending samples from the diverse sources offers the advantages to improve the model generalization, it is st

Automated and effective content-based image retrieval for digital mammography.

Nowadays, huge number of mammograms has been generated in hospitals for the diagnosis of breast cancer. Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) can contribute more reliable diagnosis by classifying the query mammograms and retrieving similar mammograms already annotated by diagnostic descriptions and treatment results. Since labels, artifacts, and pectoral muscles present in mammograms can bias the retrieval procedures, automated detection and exclusion of these image noise patterns and/or non-breast regions is an essential pre-processing step. In this study, an efficient and automated CBIR syste

Computer-aided detection for screening mammography.

Mammographic film reading is a highly demanding task, particularly in screening programs where the reader must perform a detailed visual search of a large number of images for signs of abnormality that are often subtle or small, and which occur very infrequently. False-negative cases, in which signs of abnormality are missed by a film reader, are known to occur. Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, which automatically detect potential abnormalities and indicate their locations to the reader, have the capacity to reduce the frequency of such errors by ensuring that all suspicious regions of

A generative adversarial network-based abnormality detection using only normal images for model training with application to digital breast tomosynthesis.

Deep learning has shown tremendous potential in the task of object detection in images. However, a common challenge with this task is when only a limited number of images containing the object of interest are available. This is a particular issue in cancer screening, such as digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), where less than 1% of cases contain cancer. In this study, we propose a method to train an inpainting generative adversarial network to be used for cancer detection using only images that do not contain cancer. During inference, we removed a part of the image and used the network to comp

The detection of lung cancer using massive artificial neural network based on soft tissue technique.

BACKGROUND: A proposed computer aided detection (CAD) scheme faces major issues during subtle nodule recognition. However, radiologists have not noticed subtle nodules in beginning stage of lung cancer while a proposed CAD scheme recognizes non subtle nodules using x-ray images. METHOD: Such an issue has been resolved by creating MANN (Massive Artificial Neural Network) based soft tissue technique from the lung segmented x-ray image. A soft tissue image recognizes nodule candidate for feature extortion and classification. X-ray images are downloaded using Japanese society of radiological tech

Sub-features orthogonal decoupling: Detecting bone wall absence via a small number of abnormal examples for temporal CT images.

The absence of bone wall located in the jugular bulb and sigmoid sinus of the temporal bone is one of the important reasons for pulsatile tinnitus. Automatic and accurate detection of these abnormal singes in CT slices has important theoretical significance and clinical value. Due to the shortage of abnormal samples, imbalanced samples, small inter-class differences, and low interpretability, existing deep-learning methods are greatly challenged. In this paper, we proposed a sub-features orthogonal decoupling model, which can effectively disentangle the representation features into class-speci

Development of Periapical Index Score Classification System in Periapical Radiographs Using Deep Learning.

Periapical index (PAI) scoring system is the most popular index for evaluating apical periodontitis (AP) on radiographs. It provides an ordinal scale of 1 to 5, ranging from healthy to severe AP. Scoring PAI is a time-consuming process and requires experienced dentists; thus, deep learning has been applied to hasten the process. However, most models failed to score the early stage of AP or the score 2 accurately since it shares very similar characteristics with its adjacent scores. In this study, we developed and compared binary classification methods for PAI scores which were normality classi

Utilizing Synthetic Nodules for Improving Nodule Detection in Chest Radiographs.

Algorithms that automatically identify nodular patterns in chest X-ray (CXR) images could benefit radiologists by reducing reading time and improving accuracy. A promising approach is to use deep learning, where a deep neural network (DNN) is trained to classify and localize nodular patterns (including mass) in CXR images. Such algorithms, however, require enough abnormal cases to learn representations of nodular patterns arising in practical clinical settings. Obtaining large amounts of high-quality data is impractical in medical imaging where (1) acquiring labeled images is extremely expensi

Multidetector CT urography in urogenital tuberculosis: use of reformatted images for the assessment of the radiological findings. A pictorial essay.

Urogenital tuberculosis (UGTB) is the most common form of extrapulmonary TB and is responsible for a destructive inflammation of the renal parenchyma and urinary tract often leading to the loss of kidney function. For these reasons, the early diagnosis of this disease, once considered disappeared in developed countries, is very important to establish a prompt and efficient treatment. However, the subtle and non-specific symptoms, often represented by recurrent and persistent lower urinary tract symptoms, can confound and delay the diagnosis. Therefore, an adequate and comprehensive imaging stu

A Novel Pipeline for Adrenal Gland Segmentation: Integration of a Hybrid Post-Processing Technique with Deep Learning.

Accurate segmentation of adrenal glands from CT images is essential for enhancing computer-aided diagnosis and surgical planning. However, the small size, irregular shape, and proximity to surrounding tissues make this task highly challenging. This study introduces a novel pipeline that significantly improves the segmentation of left and right adrenal glands by integrating advanced pre-processing techniques and a robust post-processing framework. Utilising a 2D UNet architecture with various backbones (VGG16, ResNet34, InceptionV3), the pipeline leverages test-time augmentation (TTA) and targe
