Using conventional portal films, the influence of the technique of set-up on the transfer error from simulator to treatment couch and on the subsequent reproducibility was made for the irradiated volume in the treatment of breast cancer. This is an analysis of 304 patients with invasive, previously untreated T1-T2 squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx treated with radiation therapy at the University of Florida between October 1964 and December 1984. All patients had a minimum 2-year follow-up and 82% had at least 5 years of follow-up. The subject of this work was to compare the effect of Conventional and Conformal techniques, used for anal canal cancer treatments, on the skin dose deposition. Skin dose was measured on a Rando phantom using XR-T GAFCHROMIC film. A new calibration protocol, developed by the AAPM Task Group 51 (TG-51) to replace the TG-21 protocol, is based on an absorbed-dose to water standard and calibration factor (N(D,w)), while the TG-21 protocol is based on an exposure (or air-kerma) standard and calibration factor (N(x)). Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are frequently treated surgically, but recurrence is not uncommon and surgery is hazardous when the lesion is large and adjacent to the growth plate. High-energy, low-dose radiation to an 8-year-old girl with ABC of the distal tibia was found to be successful, with no recurrence during the five-year follow up. No complications have ensued, and excellent function has been sustained. Further evaluation of this radiation treatment is important for similar situations in which surgical excision of ABC may involve high risk.

Low megavolt electron beam irradiation was used on 354 sites in 199 patients at the Lahey Clinic either for palliation of symptomatic hypertrophic scars or as post-operative irradiation in an attempt to prevent formation or recurrence of hypertrophic scars. This is our first case of malignant melanoma of the ciliary body treated with proton beam irradiation, a technique that we developed for irradiating choroidal melanomas. After 21 months of follow-up no growth of the tumour has been observed, and shrinkage of the tumour was noted on the follow-up photographs and by ultrasonography. Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) is a genetic disorder of blood vessels, which affects about 1 in 10,000 people. The disorder is also sometimes referred to as Osler-Weber-Rendu Disease after the doctors who studied HHT. The disorder affects males and females from all racial and ethnic groups, and the most commonly affected organs are the nose, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and brain--in that order. Radiation therapy should be considered for intractable bleeding from the upper airway or alimentary tract.

Between the 10th and 20th December 1990, there was a malfunction in the operation of the Electron Linear Accelerator (ELA) at the Hospital Clínico Universitario in Zaragoza (Spain), which led to irradiation with the highest beam energy. This situation shows the existence of a latent period between the irradiation and the appearance of the symptoms, even in situations involving much higher than normal doses in cases of localized irradiation.

The study presents a group of 176 patients with biopsy proven mycosis fungoides treated with total skin irradiation with electrons. The treatment resulted in a complete disappearance of all cutaneous lesions in 117/176 (66 percent) of the patients. The rate of complete remission was dose-dependent and was inversely dependent on the extent of the disease. Cutaneous involvement by Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is frequently diffuse, requiring large field irradiation. Selective tissue compensation techniques, accomplished with either a 1.5 cm bolus cast or water bath phantom, are compared. Intra-operative radiation therapy (IORT) can benefit patients with pelvic tumors by delivering a high dose of radiation with precise delineation of tumor bed and maximal protection of surrounding normal tissues. The IORT experience has been particularly promising for locally advanced primary or recurrent rectal cancers in which a gross total resection is achieved. Postoperative radiation is commonly employed for advanced lesions of the larynx and hypopharynx which have undergone a laryngectomy. It is technically difficult to achieve a homogeneous distribution of irradiation throughout the treatment volume because of the marked variation in contour across the treated area.
