The red turpentine beetle, Dendroctonus valens LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), colonizes all pines species within its native range throughout North and Central America. Recently, this species was accidentally introduced to China, where it has caused severe damage in pine forests. It belongs to a group of beetles that spend most of their lives between the tree bark and sapwood, where it feeds on phloem: a poor substrate with very low nutritional value of nitrogen and toxic properties due to its high content of secondary defensive compounds. The aim of this study was to characte

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) is driven primarily by estrogen deficiency, and gut microbiota-derived metabolites may participate in bone remodeling. The intestinal effects of conventional anti-osteoporosis therapy remain unclear. We investigated gut microbial and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) changes associated with alendronate-calcitriol therapy in PMO.
METHODS: Forty-one postmenopausal women were enrolled, including 21 healthy controls and 20 patients with PMO. PMO patients received oral alendronate plus calcitriol for six months, with paired fecal samples collected before a

The goal of this study was to develop a simple plating medium to allow large-scale screening of water samples for the presence of Helicobacter pylori. Five conventional plating media (brain heart infusion, brucella agar, Columbia blood agar base, campylobacter agar kit Skirrow, and HPSPA medium), each containing a commercial antibiotic supplement, were initially evaluated. Eight strains selected as common waterborne organisms (Acinetobacter, Aeromonas, Bacillus, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter, Enterococcus, Helicobacter pylori, and Pseudomonas strains) were individually plated onto each of the

A substantial proportion of infections caused by drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) in community and health care settings are recognized to be caused by evolutionarily related GNB strains. Their global spread has been suggested to occur due to human activities, such as food trade and travel. These multidrug-resistant GNB pathogens often harbor mobile drug resistance genes that are highly conserved in their sequences. Because they appear across different GNB species, these genes may have origins other than human pathogens. We hypothesized that saprophytes in common human food products

Members of the Erwiniaceae family, which can be found saprophytic in humans, have been identified several times as an infectious agent after their first identification in 1920. Erwinia persicina was first identified as a plant pathogen by being isolated from cucumber, tomato and banana in 1990, and it was shown to cause disease in many plant species in the following years. E.persicina was diagnosed as a urinary tract infection agent in an 88-year-old female patient in 1998. Our case, a 30-year-old male patient, was hospitalized for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma while being examined with the com

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of infections caused by Cefotaximase-Munich (CTX-M)-type extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) has rapidly increased during the past 15 years. Enterobacteriaceae are commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract and long-term intestinal carriage is considered important for the spread of ESBL and as a source of clinical infections. Oral biofilm such as supragingival plaque is known to contain numerous antibiotic resistance determinants and may also represent a poorly investigated site for ESBL carriage and further spread.

This study developed three microcapsule emulsions containing thymol, D-limonene, and their 1:1 mixture as the main active ingredients, designated as THY, LIM, and T-L, respectively. Their physical stability, insecticidal activity against Aedes albopictus larvae, and sustained-release performance were evaluated. In addition, changes in the gut microbiota of mosquito larvae before and after exposure to the three formulations were analyzed to preliminarily investigate the potential mechanisms underlying their insecticidal effects. The results showed that all three microcapsule emulsions exhibited

The microbiological safety of urban rivers that flow through cities is crucial to local public health. However, detailed insights into the key characteristics of pathogens in urban rivers remain limited due to the lack of efficient high-throughput analysis tools. In this study, a comprehensive profiling of potential pathogens, antibiotic-resistant pathogens (ARPs), and multidrug-resistant pathogens (MDRPs) in the Hai River, which runs through the central city of Tianjin, was conducted using metagenomic assembled genome (MAG) analysis. Of the 436 recovered MAGs assigned to 430 species, 110 MAGs

BACKGROUND: People living with cystic fibrosis (CF) may suffer from chronic respiratory infections due to acquired environmental organisms, ultimately leading in increased morbidity and mortality. Consequently, parents of children living with CF frequently ask their CF healthcare professional about sources and potential routes of transmission of environmental organisms to their child. This allows parents to make an informed decision regarding risk assessment/risk management of outdoor/ nature-based activities. Mitigations can then be put in place to help minimise or absolutely avoid exposure o

BACKGROUND: Exacerbation of pyrethroid resistance severely jeopardises the effectiveness of malaria vector control efforts. However, the mechanisms enabling the vectors to now survive exposure to very high doses of pyrethroids remain unclear. Here, using High-throughput sequencing of the 16 S ribosomal RNA gene coupled with antibiotic treatment, we provide evidence linking the mosquito microbiome to the escalation of pyrethroid resistance in major African malaria vectors, Anopheles gambiae (s.s.) and Anopheles funestus (s.s.).
RESULTS: Phenotypic characterisation of An. gambiae (s.s.) and An.

Hericium erinaceus polysaccharide (HEP) is widely regarded as a potential food additive because of its rich nutritional value. This study aimed to explore the effect of HEP on the eggshell quality of aged laying hens and to reveal the mechanisms with particular emphasis on the alterations of uterine microbiota and health. A total of 360 Jingbai laying hens at 58 weeks old were randomly allocated into 4 groups, with 6 replicates per treatment and 15 birds per replicate. The hens were fed basal diets supplemented with 0, 250, 500, or 750 mg/kg HEP for 8 weeks. The results showed that HEP supplem

Background/Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in wildlife is an emerging public health concern due to the risk of zoonotic transmission, especially through the food chain, yet data on free-ranging animals remain scarce. This study examined the presence and patterns of AMR among bacteria isolated from hunted wild boars in the Campania region of Italy. Methods: Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was used to identify bacterial isolates from wild boar meat and carcass swabs to the species level, and the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion tes

The attribution of fresh produce to the overall community-associated exposure of humans to ESBL- or AmpC-producing bacteria is currently unknown. To address this issue, the prevalence of ESBL- and AmpC-producing Enterobacteriaceae on fresh produce produced in the Netherlands was determined. Seven vegetable types that are consumed raw were selected: blanched celery, bunched carrots, chicory, endive, iceberg lettuce, mushrooms, and radish. The vegetables were mostly obtained from supermarkets. To determine whether the agricultural environment is the source of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae on
