Experimental characterization of motion resistance of the sacroiliac joint.

BACKGROUND: The human sacroiliac joint (SIJ) in vivo is exposed to compressive and shearing stress environment, given the joint lines are almost parallel to the direction of gravity. The SIJ supports efficient bipedal walking. Unexpected or unphysiological, repeated impacts are believed to cause joint misalignment and result in SIJ pain. In the anterior compartment of the SIJ being synovial, the articular surface presents fine irregularities, potentially restricting the motion of the joints. OBJECTIVE: To clarify how the SIJ articular surface affects the resistance of the motion under physiol

Validation of LEOMO inertial measurement unit sensors with marker-based three-dimensional motion capture during maximum sprinting in track cyclists.

LEOMO™ is a commercial inertial measurement unit system that provides cycling-specific motion performance indicators (MPIs) and offers a mobile solution for monitoring cyclists. We aimed to validate the LEOMO sensors during sprint cycling using gold-standard marker-based three-dimensional (3D) motion technology (Qualisys, AB). Our secondary aim was to explore the relationship between peak power during sprints and MPIs. Seventeen elite track cyclists performed 3 × 15s seated start maximum efforts on a cycle ergometer. Based on intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC3,1), the MPIs derived from 3

Exploring how metronome pacing at varying movement speeds influences local dynamic stability and coordination variability of lumbar spine motion during repetitive lifting.

Auditory metronomes have been used to preserve movement consistency when examining local dynamic stability (LDS) and coordination variability (CV) of lumbar spine motion during repetitive movements. However, the potential influence of the metronome itself on these outcome measures has rarely been considered. Therefore, this study investigated the influence of different metronome paces (i.e., lifting speeds) on measures of lumbar spine LDS and thorax-pelvis CV during a repetitive lifting/lowering task in comparison to self-paced movements. Ten participants completed 5 repetitive lift/lower tria

Weighting of visual and auditory inputs in dancers with and without previous ankle injury.

Elite dance requires highly controlled balance performance in dynamic visual and auditory environments characterized by the use of stage lighting and music. Perturbing visual input is known to influence balance in dancers, but the effects of sounds have not been clearly established. Ankle inversion injuries are common in dancers and may also play a role in dancers' ability to respond to sensory perturbations. The aims of this study were to identify changes in static balance in response to visual or auditory perturbation in elite collegiate dancers with and without a history of ankle injury, an

Optimal assessment of upper body motion - Which and how many landmarks need to be captured for representing rigid body orientation?

In biomechanical studies, the thorax is often considered rigid. Since it's a well-known simplification, usually more than three markers are used to describe its movement in motion analyses. However, there is uncertainty about how many markers are advisable and which landmarks should be used. The results of the present study describe the expected error depending on the number of markers used. Furthermore, a recommendation is given for the landmarks with the least errors. This recommendation is valid for men and women as well as for different movements. The recommendations roughly reduce the err

Topographic design in wearable MXene sensors with in-sensor machine learning for full-body avatar reconstruction.

Wearable strain sensors that detect joint/muscle strain changes become prevalent at human-machine interfaces for full-body motion monitoring. However, most wearable devices cannot offer customizable opportunities to match the sensor characteristics with specific deformation ranges of joints/muscles, resulting in suboptimal performance. Adequate wearable strain sensor design is highly required to achieve user-designated working windows without sacrificing high sensitivity, accompanied with real-time data processing. Herein, wearable Ti3C2Tx MXene sensor modules are fabricated with in-sensor mac

Motion of the multi-segmented spine in elite dancers during passé and arabesque.

BACKGROUND: The spinal biomechanics of dance tasks have received little study and no studies have used a multi-segmented spinal model. Knowledge of how the segments of the spine move may be useful to the dance clinician and dance educator. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the direction and amount of motion of the primary segments of the spine in elite dancers during an arabesque and a passé? METHODS: This observational study examined 59 elite dancers performing an arabesque and a passé using a three-dimensional motion analysis system with the trunk divided into a series of five segments: pelvis, l

Cineradiographic study of wrist motion after fracture of the distal radius.

Residual dorsal tilt is one of the main deformative factors in the malunion of fractures of the distal radius. We investigated the effect of such tilt on the range of wrist motion and on carpal alignment in a cineradiographic study of wrist motion in 30 patients with extra-articular Colles' fracture. With increased dorsal tilt, the range of wrist motion became more restricted and abnormalities of carpal alignment during wrist motion became apparent. When the dorsal tilt was less than 10 degrees, the effects on the range of motion and on the dynamic carpal alignment were small.

What is the best strategy for C3 in open-door laminoplasty: laminectomy versus laminoplasty-a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Conventional open-door laminoplasty is commonly used to treat multilevel cervical disorders but often leads to complications such as loss of cervical lordosis, limited neck motion, and axial symptoms. These issues stem from the extensive disruption of musculature and structural alterations involved in conventional methods. To address these shortcomings, the modified open-door laminoplasty with C3 laminectomy technique has been developed as a modification of conventional open-door laminoplasty, with the aims to preserve the semispinalis cervicis muscle attached to the C2 spinous pro

Using Daily Stretching to Counteract Performance Decreases as a Result of Reduced Physical Activity-A Controlled Trial.

There are many reasons for reduced physical activity leading to reduced maximal strength and sport-specific performance, such as jumping performance. These include pandemic lockdowns, serious injury, or prolonged sitting in daily work life. Consequently, such circumstances can contribute to increased morbidity and reduced physical performance. Therefore, a demand for space-saving and home-based training routines to counteract decreases in physical performance is suggested in the literature. This study aimed to investigate the possibility of using daily static stretching using a stretching boar

Effect of a Supervised Stretching Program on Neck, Shoulder, and Trunk Range of Motion in Older Women.

Upper body and neck range of motion (ROM) are important for safe walking and driving. The purpose of this study was to determine whether stretching would improve neck, trunk, and shoulder ROM. Forty-eight community-dwelling women (75 ± 3 years of age) were randomly allocated to intervention (upper body stretching, n = 15) and control conditions (lower body power training, n = 33). All participants exercised in supervised 45-minute sessions twice weekly for 12 weeks. Testing of upper body ROM included a cervical ROM, device-based measurement and field tests of the neck, trunk, and shoulder rang

Hemophilic ankle arthropathy.

Ankle arthropathy remains a frequent source of disability in the hemophilic patient. Bleeding into the ankle most commonly commences in the second decade, and, once established as a target joint, progressive damage leads to significant pain, stiffness, and deformity affecting general mobility and leisure and occupational pursuits. Review of cohorts of hemophilic patients at the Royal Free Hospital has monitored this deterioration and there is no evidence that, despite improvements in medical treatment, the pattern of insidious decline in hindfoot function has changed during the past 4 decades.

Open reduction and internal fixation for dorsal fracture dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joint using a miniplate.

Various operative techniques have been described for unstable dorsal fracture dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint with articular involvement. However, this injury still remains a therapeutic challenge for hand surgeons because no single technique guarantees successful outcomes. We performed a novel procedure using a low-profile miniplate, which allows for anatomic reduction, rigid internal fixation, and early finger joint motion. Between March 2003 and May 2009, 18 consecutive patients who suffered from 19 dorsal fracture dislocations of the PIP joint with volar articular

Evaluation of deep oscillation therapy for the treatment of lumbar pain syndrome using motion capture systems: A systematic review.

Low back pain is a painful disorder that prevents normal mobilization, increases muscle tension and whose first-line treatment is usually non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, together with non-invasive manual therapies, such as deep oscillation therapy. This systematic review aims to investigate and examine the scientific evidence of the effectiveness of deep oscillation therapy in reducing pain and clinical symptomatology in patients with low back pain, through the use of motion capture technology. To carry out this systematic review, the guidelines of the PRISMA guide were followed. A lite

Defining humeral axial rotation with optical motion capture and inertial measurement units during functional task assessment.

Humeral motion can be challenging to measure and analyze. Typically, Euler/Cardan sequences are used for humeral angle decomposition, but choice of rotation sequence has substantial effects on outcomes. A new method called True axial rotation calculation may be more precise. The objective of this study is to compare humeral axial rotation measured from two systems (optical motion capture and inertial measurement units (IMUs)) and calculated with two methods (Euler angles and True axial). Motion of torso and dominant humerus of thirty participants free from any upper limb impairments was tracke

A markerless motion capture system can reliably determine peak trunk flexion while squatting with and without a weighted vest.

Markerless motion capture has improved physical screening efficiency in sport and occupational settings; however, reliability of kinematic measurements from commercial systems must be established. Further, the impact of torso-borne equipment on these measurements is unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability of HumanTrak, a markerless motion capture system, for estimating peak trunk flexion in squat movements with and without a weighted vest. Eighteen participants completed body weight squats (BWSQ) and overhead squats (OHSQ) to their maximum depth (unrestricted-range)
