A cooperative combination of non-targeted metabolomics and electronic tongue evaluation reveals the dynamic changes in metabolites and sensory quality of radish during pickling.

Pickled radish is a traditional fermented food with a unique flavor after long-term preservation. This study analyzed the organoleptic and chemical characteristics of pickled radish from different years to investigate quality changes during pickling. The results showed that the sourness, saltiness, and aftertaste-bitterness increased after pickling, and bitterness and astringency decreased. The levels of free amino acids, soluble sugars, total phenols, and total flavonoids initially decreased during pickling but increased with prolonged pickling. The diversity of organic acids also increased o

Cordycepin Isolated from Cordyceps militaris: Its Newly Discovered Herbicidal Property and Potential Plant-Based Novel Alternative to Glyphosate.

There is currently much interest in finding new phytochemicals among plants and fungi as nature-based alternatives to replace problematic herbicides such as glyphosate, which are preferentially used in agricultural production n. We discovered striking herbicidal potency in Cordyceps militaris (L.) and identified cordycepin as its principal plant growth inhibitor. Cordycepin obtained as an ethyl acetate extract was subjected to column chromatography and evaluated for its bioassay-guided phytotoxic capacity against Raphanus sativus (radish), showing a maximum inhibition on germination and growth

Disrupted FLOWERING LOCUS C alleles from weedy radish enhance the florigenic potential of rootstocks for graft-mediated floral induction in Brassicaceae.

Graft-mediated floral induction is a classical yet promising breeding technique that accelerates seed production and shortens generation time in crops. However, its application remains limited to a few species because floral induction is often unstable. Even among florally induced rootstocks, grafted scions can differ in their flowering response depending on rootstock genotype, but the genetic basis of this variation remains unclear. Here, using a Brassicaceae grafting model, we investigated two early-bolting radish (Raphanus sativus) accessions differing in their ability to induce flowering.

Development of a zeolite-incorporated microencapsulation system for Bacillus halotolerans: legacy impact on radish and celery under salinity stress.

Salt stress is one of the most serious issues in agricultural sector, contributes to global food insecurity and reduced crop productivity. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria play important roles as phytostimulators and phytoremidiators. Bacillus halotolerans, a halophilic bacterium, is known to alleviate stress, control plant diseases, and promote plant growth under extreme conditions. Bacterial encapsulation is an alternative technology used to improve viability during handling and application. This work investigated the legacy influence of microcapsules of B. halotolerans MSR-H4, either al

Enzymatic properties of UDP-glycosyltransferase 89B1 from radish and modulation of enzyme catalytic activity via loop region mutation.

Glycosyltransferases (GTs), crucial enzymes in plants, alter natural substances through glycosylation, a process with extensive applications in pharmaceuticals, food, and cosmetics. This study narrows its focus to GT family 1, specifically UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs), which are known for glycosylating small phenolic compounds, especially hydroxybenzoates. We delve into the workings of Raphanus sativus glucosyltransferase (Rs89B1), a homolog of Arabidopsis thaliana UGT89B1, and its mutant to explore their glycosyltransferase activities toward hydroxybenzoates. Our findings reveal that Rs89B

Vibration and Slope Conditions during Harvesting Affect Radish Mass Measurements for Yield Monitoring: An Experimental Study Using a Laboratory Test Bench.

Site-specific measurements of the crop yield during harvesting are essential for successfully implementing precision management techniques. This study aimed to estimate the mass of radish tubers using the impact principle under simulated vibration and sloped-field harvesting conditions with a laboratory test bench. These conditions included the conveyor speed (CS), impact plate layout (IP), falling height onto the impact plate (FH), the plate angle relative to the horizontal (PH), the field slope, and the vibration of the harvesting machine. Two layouts of impact-type sensors were fabricated a

THE PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF SELENIUM-ENRICHED HYDROPONIC RADISH ON PARACETAMOL-INDUCED LIVER DAMAGE IN RATS.

Paracetamol-induced liver toxicity in rats is a well-studied model for liver damage. The present study investigates the morphological changes in hepatic blood vessels and the protective effects of hydroponically grown Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) pretreatment in rats with paracetamol-induced liver damage. The results indicate significant alterations in vascular morphology and liver enzyme levels, specifically alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), which serve as indicators of hepatotoxicity. The findings suggest that hydroponic Radish may mitigate the adverse effe

Platinum nanoparticles-loaded cherry radish polysaccharides with high oxidase-like activity for rapid colorimetric analysis of ascorbic acid.

Ascorbic acid (AA) is an indispensable trace component in the human body. The main supplement source is fruits, vegetables and supplements. Therefore, it is necessary to detect AA content in food. Cherry radish polysaccharides (CRRP) with regular network-like structures and tentacles, extracted from cherry radish by a simple extraction method, possess water solubility and antioxidant ability due to their abundant hydroxyl and aldehyde groups. Herein, CRRP-loaded platinum nanoparticles (CRRP-Ptn NPs) were prepared by a facile method to address the prone to aggregation of platinum nanoparticles.

Salicylic acid exerts effects on regulating flower bud differentiation and nutrient contents in red radish.

Red radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. carminatus) is a characteristic economic crop in China, with flower bud differentiation efficiency directly determining its yield and quality. However, how salicylic acid (SA) affects this process and tuber quality remains unexplored. Here, we investigated different SA concentrations' effects on endogenous hormones (GA3, IAA, CTK), flower bud differentiation, flowering, and pollen traits, alongside leaf soluble sugar, starch, and protein levels. We also applied response surface methodology (RSM) to build a regression model for optimizing SA application para

Translocation, subcellular distribution, and safety assessment of chlorfenapyr (CFP) and its metabolite tralopyril (TLP) in soil-cultivated cherry radish.

Chlorfenapyr is a frequently used insecticide in vegetables, and understanding its translocation and distribution are important for determining the residues and dietary safety in these crops. In this paper, we studied the translocation, subcellular distribution, and dissipation of chlorfenapyr and tralopyril in soil-cultivated cherry radish. Both upward and downward translocations were observed for the analytes, although the extent was limited, as indicated by the bioconcentration and translocation factors (both <1). The analytes were primarily accumulated in the cell walls. Chlorfenapyr dissi

The Effects of Different Thiol-Containing Compounds on the Degradation of Sulforaphene.

Sulforaphene (4-methylsufinyl-3-butenyl isothiocyanate, SFE), produced by myrosinase hydrolysis of glucoraphenin (4-methylsulfinyl-3-butenyl glucosinolate) found in radish seeds, is strongly associated with cancer prevention. In this study, we investigated the stability of SFE (purity above 98%) under various thiol-containing compounds at 25 °C, such as sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), glutathione (GSH), and cysteine (Cys). We observed that the degradation of SFE was closely related to the presence and dissociation capacity of thiol-containing compounds in the solution, particularly the thiol group

Monitoring survey of nitrate content in beetroot, radish and cabbage in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Nitrates, compounds commonly occurring in nature, are present for example in vegetables, where they accumulate and become their contaminants. It is estimated that approximately 70-90% of nitrates intake comes from vegetables, which are therefore the main source of human exposure to these compounds through dietary intake. The European Union legislation limits nitrates as contaminants to three leafy vegetables, i.e. lettuce, spinach and rucola. The EU Member States are obliged to monitor nitrate levels in vegetables which may contain significant levels of these compounds. OBJECTIVE:

Phenolic compounds and bioactive extract produced by endophytic fungus Coriolopsis rigida.

Coriolopsis rigida was isolated as an endophytic fungus from the medicinal plant Cochlospermum regium, and their production of secondary metabolites has not yet been investigated. Thus, the endophyte was cultivated on rice solid media to evaluate its ability to produce bioactive compounds and then the chloroform extract was obtained. Two phenolic compounds, tyrosol (1) and a new natural product p-hydroxyphenylacetamide (2), were isolated from the extract. The structures of the compounds were elucidated mainly by NMR. The extract showed potent antioxidant activity with an efficient concentratio

Discovery of Transfer Factors in Plant-Derived Proteins and an In Vitro Assessment of Their Immunological Activities.

Repeated exposure to pathogens leads to evolutionary selection of adaptive traits. Many species transfer immunological memory to their offspring to counteract future immune challenges. Transfer factors such as those found in the colostrum are among the many mechanisms where transfer of immunologic memory from one generation to the next can be achieved for an enhanced immune response. Here, a library of 100 plants with high protein contents was screened to find plant-based proteins that behave like a transfer factor moiety to boost human immunity. Aqueous extracts from candidate plants were tes

Improved growth of pea, lettuce, and radish plants using the slow release of hydrogen sulfide from GYY-4137.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a key gasotransmitter in agriculture and has been reported to increase the growth of plants in the first two weeks and to mitigate the effects of environmental stressors. GYY-4137 is widely used in these studies because it slowly releases H2S, but there is disagreement as to whether it requires enzymes to release H2S. In this article we describe the release of H2S in water without enzymes and that it releases H2S faster in organic solvents than in water or when mixed in topsoil. Furthermore, we describe the long-term effect of dosing pea, radish, and lettuce plants wi

Safety Assessment of Radish Root - Derived Ingredients as Used in Cosmetics.

The Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety (Panel) assessed the safety of 7 radish root-derived ingredients, most of which are reported to function as hair and skin conditioning agents in cosmetic products. Because final product formulations may contain multiple botanicals, each containing similar constituents of concern, formulators are advised to be aware of these constituents and to avoid reaching levels that may be hazardous to consumers. With radish root-derived ingredients, the Panel was concerned about the presence of anthocyanins and isothiocyanates in cosmetics. Industry should u

Field application doses of fipronil and 2,4-D and toxic effects on non-target soil organisms: a microcosm-level approach.

Many studies on risk assessment of pesticides to non-target soil organisms have been performed based on single-species laboratory tests using a reference soil according to standard test guidelines. Our study aimed to simulate realistic exposure scenarios for Brazilian sugarcane crop fields. Pesticides 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and fipronil were sprayed on natural soil at recommended doses (234.5 g/ha and 400 g/ha, respectively) and the experiments were maintained at 25 ± 2 °C with a 12:12-hr light:dark photoperiod for 21 days. Rain events were simulated twice a week (Days 1, 4, 8,
