Assessing the utility of a virtual-reality neuropsychological test battery, 'CONVIRT', in detecting alcohol-induced cognitive impairment.

New technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and eye-tracking software have paved the way for more sophisticated and ecologically valid measures of cognitive function. Testing the sensitivity and reliability of such measurements in response to acute alcohol intoxication provides a first step in establishing how these measures may operate in relation to cognitive impairments observed post-concussion. Healthy young adults (N = 54, M = 20.65, SD = 2.06, 30 females) completed the CONVIRT test battery (manual simple and choice reaction-time and saccade reaction-time) at three breath alcohol concen

Examining the Academic Trends in Neuropsychological Tests for Executive Functions Using Virtual Reality: Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: In neuropsychology, fully immersive virtual reality (VR) has been spotlighted as a promising tool. It is considered that VR not only overcomes the existing limitation of neuropsychological tests but is also appropriate for treating executive functions (EFs) within activities of daily living (ADL) due to its high ecological validity. While fully immersive VR offers new possibilities of neuropsychological tests, there are few studies that overview the intellectual landscape and academic trends in the research related to mainly targeted EFs with fully immersive VR. OBJECTIVE: The obj

A novel virtual-reality-based route-learning test suite: Assessing the effects of cognitive aging on navigation.

Most research groups studying human navigational behavior with virtual environment (VE) technology develop their own tasks and protocols. This makes it difficult to compare results between groups and to create normative data sets for any specific navigational task. Such norms, however, are prerequisites for the use of navigation assessments as diagnostic tools-for example, to support the early and differential diagnosis of atypical aging. Here we start addressing these problems by presenting and evaluating a new navigation test suite that we make freely available to other researchers (https://

Initial validation of a virtual environment for assessment of memory functioning: virtual reality cognitive performance assessment test.

The current project is an initial attempt at validating the Virtual Reality Cognitive Performance Assessment Test (VRCPAT), a virtual environment-based measure of learning and memory. To examine convergent and discriminant validity, a multitrait-multimethod matrix was used in which we hypothesized that the VRCPAT's total learning and memory scores would correlate with other neuropsychological measures involving learning and memory but not with measures involving potential confounds (i.e., executive functions; attention; processing speed; and verbal fluency). Using a sequential hierarchical str

Testing DfR against reality using a recyclability assessment framework: A case study on lamination adhesive for laminated PE-based flexible packaging.

Laminated films provide essential mechanical, optical, and barrier functions in packaging but often hinder closed-loop film-to-film recycling. This study introduces a recyclability index (RI) framework to quantitatively assess the recycling performance and circularity potential of flexible packaging under realistic closed-loop conditions and evaluates whether a designed-for-recycling polyurethane (PUR) lamination adhesive supports future recycled-content targets. Five mono-material laminates (LDPE, MDOPE, barrier PE, BOPE, and metallized BOPE) and three multi-material laminates (BOPP, BOPA, an

The Inventory of Personality Organization-Reality Testing Subscale and Belief in Science Scale: Confirmatory factor and Rasch analysis of thinking style measures.

The Inventory of Personality Organization-Reality Testing Subscale (IPO-RT) and Belief in Science Scale (BIS) represent indirect, proxy measures of intuitive-experiential and analytical-rational thinking. However, a limited appraisal of factorial structure exists, and assessment of person-item functioning has not occurred. This study assessed the IPO-RT and BIS using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Rasch analysis with a sample of 1030 participants (465 males, 565 females). Correlation analysis revealed a negative, moderate relationship between the measures. CFA supported a bifactorial m

Using Virtual Reality to Complement Paper-and-Pencil Tests to Assess Visual Unilateral Spatial Neglect: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Visual neglect is one of the most frequent neuropsychological consequences of acute brain damage. Generally, paper-and-pencil tests, administered in the peripersonal space, are used to establish the presence of neglect. However, the multidimensional nature of neglect makes the diagnostic process challenging. Neglect varies, among other things, in spatial regions; that is, personal, peripersonal, and extrapersonal space. OBJECTIVE: In this feasibility study, we aim to establish the reliability and validity of a newly developed Functional ExtraPersonal Space Neglect Test (FEPSNeT) e

Assessment of verbal memory in Parkinson's disease utilizing a virtual reality-based Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test.

The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) is a commonly used tool for evaluating verbal learning and memory in neuropsychological assessments. In recent years, we developed a Virtual Reality (VR) adaptation of the RAVLT (VR-RVLT), aiming for increased ecological validity compared to the traditional pen and paper gold standard (GS-RAVLT). Following validation in healthy cohorts, the VR-RAVLT was validated with thirty individuals with Parkinson's Disease (PD) that completed both the GS-RAVLT and the VR- RAVLT. Validity of the VR-RAVLT was evaluated by assessing its construct and discriminant

It is not real until it feels real: Testing a new method for simulation of eyewitness experience with virtual reality technology and equipment.

Laboratory research in the psychology of witness testimony is often criticized for its lack of ecological validity, including the use of unrealistic artificial stimuli to test memory performance. The purpose of our study is to present a method that can provide an intermediary between laboratory research and field studies or naturalistic experiments that are difficult to control and administer. It uses Video-360° technology and virtual reality (VR) equipment, which cuts subjects off from external stimuli and gives them control over the visual field. This can potentially increase the realism of

A randomised controlled test of emotional attributes of a virtual coach within a virtual reality (VR) mental health treatment.

We set out to test whether positive non-verbal behaviours of a virtual coach can enhance people's engagement in automated virtual reality therapy. 120 individuals scoring highly for fear of heights participated. In a two-by-two factor, between-groups, randomised design, participants met a virtual coach that varied in warmth of facial expression (with/without) and affirmative nods (with/without). The virtual coach provided a consultation about treating fear of heights. Participants rated the therapeutic alliance, treatment credibility, and treatment expectancy.
