BACKGROUND: Chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL) is a hematological disorder characterized by the clonal expansion of small mature lymphocytes that accumulate in the blood and bone marrow. CLL can arise from B-, T-, or natural killer cell clones. The cytological evaluation of blood smears is often the simplest and least invasive method for diagnosing lymphoid leukemia. PURPOSE: The progress in identifying immunological mechanisms in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) has partly been hampered by the fact that the disease is heterogeneous. Here we have investigated complement and Fc receptors, as part of the inflammatory process, in two subgroups of JIA.
METHODS: Blood from 26 patients with oligoarticular or polyarticular course type JIA and 21 healthy age and sex-matched controls were investigated by FACS and immunoassays.

OBJECTIVES: HIV-1 bound extracellularly to follicular dendritic cells (FDC) in germinal centers (GC) of lymphoid tissues (LT) represents the largest viral reservoir in HIV-infected individuals; however there is no direct evidence as to whether HIV trapped in human GC remains infectious. In the GC, complement receptors and Fc gamma receptors have been suggested to participate in trapping of HIV; therefore, the relative contribution of complement- and Fc gamma receptors in binding HIV on LT was investigated and the infectivity of this virus was tested.

We investigated the interaction of HIV immune complexes (HIV IC) with mononuclear cells from lymph nodes and blood. While antibody alone did not affect binding of HIV IC to mononuclear cells, antibody plus complement increased binding by as much as 10-fold and complement alone also increased binding slightly. Raji cells, a CR2-positive Burkitt lymphoma cell line, incubated in normal human serum, activate C3 and fix C3-derived fragments.
