American National Red Cross experience with hepatitis-B antibody (HBAb or anti-HBAg) testing.

Blood collected by 11 Red Cross Regional Blood Centers were screened by the method of agar gel diffusion (AGD) for the presence of hepatitis-B antibody. Of the 185,134 units tested, 114 were found to be positive for HBAb by the Regional Centers and were forwarded to National Special Projects Laboratory for confirmation. Only five out of 114 samples revealed lines of identity with a control anti-HBAg when reacted with a pool of plasma positive for hepatitis-B antigen that was different from that which was provided to the Centers. Apparently, the precipitation reactions observed by the Centers w

Using Community Feedback to Guide the COVID-19 Response in Sub-Saharan Africa: Red Cross and Red Crescent Approach and Lessons Learned from Ebola.

Risk communication and community engagement are critical elements of epidemic response. Despite progress made in this area, few examples of regional feedback mechanisms in Africa provide information on community concerns and perceptions in real time. To enable humanitarian responders to move beyond disseminating messages, work in partnership with communities, listen to their ideas, identify community-led solutions, and support implementation of solutions systems need to be in place for documenting, analyzing, and acting on community feedback. This article describes how the International Federa

Dog-bite injuries at the Animal Bite Clinic of the Thai Red Cross Society in Bangkok.

Canine rabies remains a public health problem in Thailand and other developing countries. This study of animal bites at the Animal Bite Clinic at the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute revealed that: (1) The majority of patients were bitten by dogs and the time of the attack was mostly during the day. (2) School-aged children are at the highest risk for animal bites. (3) The most common site of injury are the legs and foot (64.2%), with the second most common site being the hands and fingers (21.2%). (4) Only 48 per cent of patients received rabies vaccine 1-2 days after being exposed. There wa

Injuries of the lower limbs caused by antipersonnel mines: the experience of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Antipersonnel mines are used frequently in armed conflicts. Victims do not sustain their injuries only during the conflict, but sometimes years after it has ended. The object of this paper is to describe the treatment of patients with mine injuries in terms of mortality and the drain on hospital resources. A group of patients with fresh mine injuries who were treated at hospitals of the International Committee of the Red Cross was analysed retrospectively. About 25 per cent of patients need an amputation. The most common surgical amputation is below the knee. The study shows that the level of

Sequestrocytes: a manifestation of transcellular cross-bonding of the red cell membrane in sickle cell anemia.

An unusual form of red cells (called sequestrocytes) that circulate in the peripheral blood of patients with sickle cell anemia has been identified. In wetmount light microscopy preparations, sequestrocytes appear as massively vacuolated erythrocytes. We have shown by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy that the morphology of sequestrocytes can be accounted for on the basis of transcellular cross-bonding of the cell membrane. Initially, endocytotic vesicles span the cytoplasmic space, forming putative cytoskeletal fusion zones. Points of fusion of the membrane ske

Assessing red blood cell distribution width in Vietnamese heart failure patients: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is becoming a growing public health concern. Diagnostic tests for determining the severity of HF often come with high costs and require specialized expertise, which makes it difficult to assess HF severity, especially in low-income countries or at primary healthcare facilities. Recently, red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has emerged as a promising, easily accessible marker associated with HF severity. The study aimed to assess changes in RDW levels in HF patients and the diagnostic value of RDW in detecting acute heart failure (AHF) among HF patients. METH

Tracheostomy in the management of laryngotracheobronchitis. Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital experience, 1980-1985.

In the 6-year period 1980-1985 162 children required tracheostomy during treatment of laryngotracheobronchitis at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, Cape Town. This represents 4.6% of 3,500 children with this disorder and 28% of those requiring airway intervention. Fifty-eight percent of the children were decannulated within 4 weeks and 75% within 10 weeks. Fifty-four per cent of the children required one or more further procedures before decannulation, including 7 children who required a laryngotracheoplasty. Obstructing stomal granulation tissue had to be removed from 24 children an

[HIV transmission via blood transfusions: a study by the Swiss Red Cross blood bank service].

An inquiry amongst blood transfusion services served to establish at 19 the number of known transfusion associated HIV infections in Switzerland. In 12 cases the transfusion of an anti-HIV positive blood unit could be proven retrospectively, while in 7 cases an HIV-infected blood donor could not be found but the association of the infection with blood transfusion is highly probable by exclusion of other risk factors. All these infections occurred before introduction of anti-HIV screening in Switzerland in November 1985. After this date no new transfusion associated HIV infections have been rep

Keeping Blood Transfusion Safe From West Nile Virus: American Red Cross Experience, 2003 to 2012.

West Nile virus (WNV) appeared for the first time in the United States in 1999 and rapidly spread across the Western hemisphere within a few years causing hundreds of thousands of human infections and significant disease. In 2002, it was found to be transmissible by blood transfusion, and within less than a year, nucleic acid testing for WNV RNA was in place for all US donations. The American Red Cross (ARC) collects approximately 40% of blood donations in the United States and closely monitors the results of such testing and evaluates donors found to be reactive. This review describes the 10-
