Effects of spectrum, background noise, and stimulation rate on the auditory startle reflex in hyperbilirubinemic rats.

The sensory element of the acoustic startle reflex was studied in neonatal rats. Stimulus frequency, background noise, and stimulus presentation rate all affected the reflex. The performance of jaundiced rats with central auditory pathology is initially poorer than that of nonjaundiced rats but rapidly improves to the level of the controls, suggesting that the jaundiced rats may be a model for central auditory disturbances in humans. Startle reflex measurements give no indication that jaundiced rats surviving the testing period had neural hearing loss.

The GRIA3 c.2477G > A Variant Causes an Exaggerated Startle Reflex, Chorea, and Multifocal Myoclonus.

BACKGROUND: Hemizygous mutations in GRIA3 encoding the GluA3 subunit of the amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor are known to be associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, including intellectual disability, hypotonia, an autism spectrum disorder, sleep disturbances, and epilepsy in males. OBJECTIVE: To describe a new and consistent phenotype in 4 affected male patients associated with an undescribed deleterious variant in GRIA3. METHODS: We evaluated a large French family in which segregate a singular phenotype according to an apparent X-linked mode of inheritance.

Age-related changes in the acoustic startle reflex in Fischer 344 and Long Evans rats.

The behavioral consequences of age-related changes in the auditory system were studied in Fischer 344 (F344) rats as a model of fast aging and in Long Evans (LE) rats as a model of normal aging. Hearing thresholds, the strength of the acoustic startle responses (ASRs) to noise and tonal stimuli, and the efficiency of the prepulse inhibition (PPI) of ASR were assessed in young-adult, middle-aged, and aged rats of both strains. Compared with LE rats, F344 rats showed larger age-related hearing threshold shifts, and the amplitudes of their startle responses were mostly lower. Both rat strains dem

Do EEG and Startle Reflex Modulation Vary with Self-Reported Aggression in Response to Violent Images?

Increased violence and aggressive tendencies are a problem in much of the world and are often symptomatic of many other neurological and psychiatric conditions. Among clinicians, current methods of diagnosis of problem aggressive behaviour rely heavily on the use of self-report measures as described by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th Edition (DSM-5) and International Classification of Diseases 10th revision (ICD-10). This approach does not place adequate emphasis on objective measures that are potentially sensitive to processes not feeding into subjective self-rep

Reflex myoclonic epilepsy in infancy: a new age-dependent idiopathic epileptic syndrome related to startle reaction.

Benign myoclonic epilepsy of infancy (BMEI) is an idiopathic disorder characterized by spontaneous myoclonic attacks with onset in the first 2 years of life. We observed 6 neurologically normal infants (aged 6-21 months) with attacks that resembled those of BMEI but that occurred as reflex responses to unexpected auditory and tactile stimuli. four infants also had rare spontaneous attacks. These reflex attacks consisted of isolated muscle jerks or clusters of up to eight symmetric limb jerks affecting mainly the arms. Five of the children had a family history of epilepsy or febrile convulsions

Apomorphine, d-amphetamine, strychnine and yohimbine do not alter prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex.

Rats were presented with noise bursts alone or noise bursts 60 ms after presentation of either a 60 dB or an 80 dB prepulse after injection of the dopamine agonists apomorphine (3 mg/kg) or d-amphetamine (4 mg/kg), the glycine antagonist strychnine (1.5 mg/kg) or the alpha 2 antagonist yohimbine (5 mg/kg). Presentation of prepulses inhibited startle, with greater inhibition following an 80 dB versus 60 dB prepulse. Apomorphine, d-amphetamine and strychnine increased overall startle levels but did not attenuate prepulse inhibition, since the absolute change in startle following prepulse present

Acoustic startle reflex in patients with chronic stroke at different stages of motor recovery: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic startle reflex (ASR) can be used as a tool to examine reticulospinal excitability. The potential role of reticulospinal mechanisms in the development of spasticity has been suggested but not tested. OBJECTIVE: To examine reticulospinal excitability at different stages of motor recovery in patients with chronic stroke using the ASR. METHODS: Sixteen subjects with hemiplegic stroke participated in the study. We examined ASR responses at rest and contralateral motor overflow during voluntary elbow flexion. RESULTS: ASR responses in impaired biceps muscles showed different

Differential motivational responses to food and pleasurable cues in anorexia and bulimia nervosa: a startle reflex paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal perceptions of food and shape underpin the cognitive behavioural model of eating disorders (EDs). The aim of this study was to investigate motivational processing of disorder-specific and standard emotional cues in anorexia (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) using startle eyeblink modulation (SEM). SEM was used because it is sensitive to motivational states of approach (appetitive response) and withdrawal (aversive response), which are independent of conscious intentional control. METHOD: Acoustically elicited SEM and subjective anxiety ratings were measured in 30 female patie

Effects of single and repeated exposure to apomorphine on the acoustic startle reflex and its inhibition by a visual prepulse.

The acoustic startle reflex (ASR) is inhibited by startle-irrelevant stimuli that briefly precede reflex elicitation. This effect, prepulse inhibition (PPI), is reduced in strength for animals that have received dopamine agonists, such as apomorphine (APO). Reduction in PPI is most evident for weak masked noise prepulses, thus suggesting that APO disrupts the reception of stimuli to the extent that they present a low signal-to-noise ratio. Here we examine the effect of APO on PPI produced by non-masked visual prepulses. Light flashes were given at two intensities, 40, 70, 110, or 220 ms before

[A study of pathogenesis and symptoms of Tourette's syndrome--mainly on the importance of "startle reflex" through Latah reaction].

There is no established theory on pathogenesis of Tourette's syndrome, but recently, a theory of the British school of behaviorism; 'transient tics' and the more serious case, Tourette's syndrome which ensues on the fixation of the startle reflex, have received attention. So we determined, whether pathogenesis and symptoms of Tourette's syndrome could be systematically explained by "the startle reflex theory". Authors assumed that the startle reflex was composed of two divided actions, a series of muscular movements which started with eye blinks and terminated in the flexion of lower limbs (th

Altered Acoustic Startle Reflex, Prepulse Inhibition, and Peripheral Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor in Morphine Self-Administered Rats.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggested that opiate withdrawal may increase anxiety and disrupt brain-derived neurotrophic factor function, but the effects of i.v. morphine self-administration on these measures remain unclear. METHODS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with a catheter in the jugular vein. After 1 week of recovery, the animals were allowed to self-administer either i.v. morphine (0.5 mg/kg per infusion, 4 h/d) or saline in the operant conditioning chambers. The acoustic startle reflex and prepulse inhibition were measured at a baseline and on self-administration day

Gap-Prepulse Inhibition of the Acoustic Startle Reflex (GPIAS) for Tinnitus Assessment: Current Status and Future Directions.

The progress in the field of tinnitus largely depends on the development of a reliable tinnitus animal model. Recently, a new method based on the acoustic startle reflex modification was introduced for tinnitus screening in laboratory animals. This method was enthusiastically adopted and now widely used by many scientists in the field due to its seeming simplicity and a number of advantages over the other methods of tinnitus assessment. Furthermore, this method opened an opportunity for tinnitus assessment in humans as well. Unfortunately, multiple modifications of data collection and interpre

[Early social isolation increases aggression and impairs a short-term habituation in acoustic startle reflex in rats].

Prolonged social isolation in early ontogeny leads to various changes in behavior and cognitive dysfunction in adult rats; however, data on the disorders are contradictory. In the present work, we studied the effects of early social isolation in Wistar rats by indices of psychomotor activity, aggression, anxiety, depression-like behavior, sensorimotor reactivity and short-term habituation of acoustic startle reflex. On the 24th postnatal day, rats were weaned from the dams and housed in individual cages for nine consecutive weeks. Animal behavior was evaluated at the age of one, two and three

The effects of d-amphetamine, methylphenidate, sydnocarb, and caffeine on prepulse inhibition of the startle reflex in DBA/2 mice.

RATIONALE: Dopamine (DA) agonists decrease prepulse inhibition (PPI) and are widely used in translational models for the sensorimotor gating deficits in schizophrenia. Reductions in PPI induced by DA agonists are routinely reversed by antipsychotics in these translational models. Nevertheless, under conditions of low-baseline PPI, DA agonists may increase PPI in humans and experimental animals. DBA/2 mice have naturally low-baseline PPI, which as in the drug-induced translational models, is increased by antipsychotics. OBJECTIVE: Determine whether DBA/2 mice respond like other models of low-b

Low-frequency tone pips elicit exaggerated startle reflexes in C57BL/6J mice with hearing loss.

The strength of the acoustic startle reflex (ASR) as a function of age was studied in adult C57BL/6J and CBA/CaJ mice, because altered ASR levels are a potential behavioral consequence of the neural reorganization that accompanies the early-onset hearing loss of the C57BL, in contrast to the normal-hearing CBA. For C57BL mice at 14-36 weeks of age, compared with 7-week-old mice, high-frequency thresholds measured with the auditory brainstem response (ABR) were less sensitive by about 25-30 dB while the hearing loss at low frequencies was 10-15 dB, but by 60 weeks losses of 45-50 dB were presen

Diagnostic Dilemma in an Infant With Sound-Triggered Motor Events: Reflex Epilepsy Versus Exaggerated Startle-A Case Report.

Auditory-triggered motor events in infancy present a significant diagnostic challenge due to overlap between epileptic and non-epileptic startle phenomena. We report the case of a term female infant with neonatal-onset seizures and subsequent development of reproducible sound-triggered jerky movements, raising diagnostic uncertainty between exaggerated startle reflex and reflex auditory epilepsy. The child initially presented with seizures on the third day of life and was treated with phenobarbital. During early infancy, brief motor events consistently precipitated by sudden auditory stimuli w

Time- and frequency-dependent changes in acoustic startle reflex amplitude following cyclodextrin-induced outer and inner cell loss.

The acoustic startle reflex (ASR) amplitude can be enhanced or suppressed by noise-induced hearing loss or age-related hearing loss; however, little is known about how the ASR changes when ototoxic drugs destroy outer hair cells (OHCs) and inner hair cells (IHCs). High doses of 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPβCD), a cholesterol-lowering drug used to treat Niemann-Pick Type disease type C1, initially destroy OHCs and then the IHCs 6-8 weeks later. Adult rats were treated with doses of HPβCD designed to produce a diversity of hair cell lesions and hearing losses. When HPβCD destroyed OHCs

An intense electrical stimulus can elicit a StartReact effect but with decreased incidence and later onset of the startle reflex.

Planned actions can be triggered involuntarily by a startling acoustic stimulus (SAS), resulting in very short reaction times (RT). This phenomenon, known as the StartReact effect, is thought to result from the startle-related activation of reticular structures. However, other sensory modalities also can elicit a reflexive startle response. Here, we assessed the effectiveness of an intense startling electric stimulus (SES) in eliciting the StartReact effect as compared to a SAS. We tested SES intensities at 15 and 25 times the perceptual threshold of each participant, as well as SAS intensitie
