Modulation of the stretch reflex of jaw-closing muscles in different modes and phases of respiration.

The objective of this study was to investigate whether and how changes in the mode of respiration affect the electromyographic activity of human jaw-closing muscles. Fifteen men were examined in this study. A pair of surface electrodes was attached bilaterally to the masseter and anterior and posterior temporalis muscles for electromyographic recording. Respiratory movements of the chest wall and nasal airflow were recorded simultaneously. Recordings were performed with subjects in the sitting position during quiet nasal and oral respiration. The stretch reflex of jaw-closing muscles was elici

Relative roles of irritant, type-J and pulmonary stretch receptors in lung reflexes.

Bilateral anodal block of both cervical vagus nerves of anaesthetized rabbits has been used to assess the relative role of afferent pathways with myelinated fibres (primarily from lung irritant receptors) and with nonmyelinated fibres (from J-receptors) in respiratory responses to some lung conditions. With inhalation of histamine aerosol the increase in breathing frequency is due to myelinated afferent fibres from irritant receptors. The similar response with inhalation of halothane is due to non-myelinated fibres from J-receptors. The reflex breathing response in lung oedema involves both pa

Study of propriospinal interneuron system in man. Cutaneous exteroceptive conditioning of stretch reflexes.

Functional characteristics of the propriospinal interneuron system have been studied in 20 patients with clinically complete chronic transverse spinal cord injury by conditioning repetitively elicited Achilles tendon jerks with noxious electrical stimuli applied to the thoracic, lumbar, and sacral dermatomes. Such conditioning stimuli caused an increase of ipsilateral and contralateral Achilles tendon jerks except when they were applied to the ipsilateral plantar surface when they caused suppression. This effect is due to inhibition of the tested extensor motoneurons by the conditioning stimul

Lung reflexes in rabbits during pulmonary stretch receptor block by sulphur dioxide.

Anaesthetized rabbits were given 200 ppm sulphur dioxide to breathe for 10 min. This abolished activity in 23 of 26 pulmonary stretch receptors, while leaving that of lung irritant receptors unimpaired. The Breuer-Hering reflex was abolished and breathing became deeper and slower. Inspiratory time (tI) was increased and expiratory time (tE) decreased. Subsequent vagotomy increased tidal volume (VT), tI and tE. In animals with stretch receptors blocked, injections of phenyl diguanide and histamine still increased breathing frequency and decreased VT, indicating that reflexes from lung irritant

Enhancing postural stability in a musculoskeletal hopping robot through stretch reflex application on biarticular thigh muscles.

Postural stabilization during rapid and powerful hopping actions represents a significant challenge for legged robotics. One strategy utilized by humans to negotiate this difficulty is the robust activation of biarticular thigh muscles. Guided by this physiological principle, this study aims to enhance the postural stability of a hopping robot through the emulation of this human mechanism. A legged robot powered by pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) was designed to mimic human anatomical structures. A critical aspect of this development was creating a tension-oriented stretch reflex system en

A novel mechatronic system for evaluating elbow muscular spasticity relying on Tonic Stretch Reflex Threshold estimation.

Muscular spasticity represents one of the most common motor disorder associated to lesions of the Central Nervous System, such as Stroke, and affects joint mobility up to the complete prevention of skeletal muscle voluntary control. Its clinical evaluation is hence of fundamental relevance for an effective rehabilitation of the affected subjects. Standard assessment protocols are usually manually performed by humans, and hence their reliability strongly depends on the capabilities of the clinical operator performing the procedures. To overcome this limitation, one solution is the usage of mech

Altered activation patterns by triceps surae stretch reflex pathways in acute and chronic spinal cord injury.

Spinal reflexes are modified by spinal cord injury (SCI) due the loss of excitatory inputs from supraspinal structures and changes within the spinal cord. The stretch reflex is one of the simplest pathways of the central nervous system and was used presently to evaluate how inputs from primary and secondary muscle spindles interact with spinal circuits before and after spinal transection (i.e., spinalization) in 12 adult decerebrate cats. Seven cats were spinalized and allowed to recover for 1 mo (i.e., chronic spinal state), whereas 5 cats were evaluated before (i.e., intact state) and after

A single sequence of intermittent hypoxia does not alter stretch reflex excitability in able-bodied individuals.

Spasticity attributable to exaggerated stretch reflex pathways, particularly affecting the ankle plantar flexors, often impairs overground walking in persons with incomplete spinal cord injury. Compelling evidence from rodent models underscores how exposure to acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) can provide a unique medium to induce spinal plasticity in key inhibitory pathways mediating stretch reflex excitability and potentially affect spasticity. In this study, we quantify the effects of a single exposure to AIH on the stretch reflex in able-bodied individuals. We hypothesized that a single seq

Acute Effects of Kinesio Taping on Knee Extensor Peak Torque and Stretch Reflex in Healthy Adults.

Kinesio Tex tape (KT) is used to prevent and treat sports-related injuries and to enhance muscle performance. It has been proposed that the direction of taping may either facilitate or inhibit the muscle by having different effects on cutaneous receptors that modulate excitability of the motor neurons. This study had 2 goals. First, we wished to determine if KT application affects muscle performance and if the method of application facilitates or inhibits muscle performance. This was assessed by measuring isokinetic knee extension peak torque in the knee extensor. Second, we assessed neurologi

Medium latency stretch reflexes in young-onset Parkinson's disease and MPTP-induced parkinsonism.

It is still unclear why components of the phasic stretch reflex are increased in Parkinson's disease (PD). To study the role of aging, we assessed medium latency (ML) stretch reflexes in 19 Parkinson patients (8 with young-onset PD, 11 with late-onset PD) and 23 normal subjects (10 young, 13 old). To assess the contribution of supraspinal dopaminergic influences, we also studied 5 young parkinsonian patients with a selective central dopamine deficiency induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). ML responses were recorded from the medial gastrocnemius muscle which was stret

Muscle afferent potential ('A-wave') in the surface electromyogram of a phasic stretch reflex in normal humans.

The experiments reported in this paper tested the hypothesis that the afferent potential elicited by a tendon tap in an isometrically recorded phasic stretch reflex can be detected in the surface EMG of normal humans when appropriate techniques are used. These techniques involved (1) training the subjects to relax mentally and physically so that the EMG was silent before and immediately after the diphasic MAP which reflects a highly synchronous discharge of afferent impulses from low threshold muscle stretch receptors after a tendon tap, and (2) using a data retrieval computer to summate stimu

Reduced Post-Activation Depression in Humans with Spinal Cord Injury Is Not Related to Stretch Reflex Hyperexcitability.

Post-activation depression of spinal reflexes is reduced following central motor lesions, including spinal cord injury (SCI), and has long been proposed to contribute to signs and symptoms associated with spasticity. To evaluate this hypothesis, we assessed post-activation depression in individuals with chronic SCI, both males and females with and without stretch reflex hyperexcitability (SRH) as well as in age-matched controls. Post-activation depression was assessed by recording the soleus H-reflex every 10 s using paired pulses at interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 1, 2, and 4 s, and test re

Non-uniform upregulation of the autogenic stretch reflex among hindlimb extensors following lateral spinal lesion in the cat.

Successful propagation throughout the step cycle is contingent on adequate regulation of whole-limb stiffness by proprioceptive feedback. Following spinal cord injury (SCI), there are changes in the strength and organization of proprioceptive feedback that can result in altered joint stiffness. In this study, we measured changes in autogenic feedback of five hindlimb extensor muscles following chronic low thoracic lateral hemisection (LSH) in decerebrate cats. We present three features of the autogenic stretch reflex obtained using a mechanographic method. Stiffness was a measure of the resist

Botulinum toxin effect on voluntary and stretch reflex-related torque produced by the quadriceps: an isokinetic pilot study.

BACKGROUND: An understanding of the mechanical effects of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT A) on spastic and voluntary muscle contraction may help predict functional responders. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of BoNT A on the voluntary and stretch reflex-related torques produced by activation of the rectus femoris (RF). METHODS: This was a prospective open study where 15 incomplete spinal cord injury patients, impaired by a stiff-knee gait, with RF hyperactivity in mid-swing quantified by formal gait analysis (GA), were assessed before and after RF BoNT A injection (Botox, 200 UI). MAIN OUTCO

Time-course analysis of stretch reflexes in hemiparetic subjects using an on-line spasticity measurement system.

Spasticity after a stroke is usually assessed in a score form by subjectively determining the resistance of a joint to an externally imposed passive movement. This work presents a spasticity measurement system for on-line quantifying the stretch reflex of paretic limbs. Four different constant stretch velocities in a ramp-and-hold mode are used to elicit the stretch reflex of the elbow joint in spastic subjects. The subjects are tested at supine position with the upper limb stretched towards the ground, in contrast with the horizontally stretched movement used in other studies. By subtracting

Stretch reflexes of the proximal arm in a patient with mirror movements: absence of bilateral long-latency components.

The stretch reflex responses evoked by unilateral limb displacement in distal (first dorsal interosseus (FDI)) and in proximal (biceps brachii (Bb)) arm muscles were studied during matched bilateral contractions in a patient with congenital mirror movements. In this patient unilateral transcortical magnetic stimulation (TMS) elicited not only the normal contralateral EMG response but also a clear ipsilateral component in the EMG of both proximal and distal arm muscles. As expected from previous studies, the ipsilateral FDI muscle responded to stretch of the index finger with short- (M1) and lo

Ultrasound-Derived Stretch Reflex Threshold Estimation Using Tendon-to-Bone Distance During Tendon Tapping in Post-Stroke Spasticity.

Spasticity assessment after stroke requires objective measures of stretch reflex excitability, yet clinically practical and structurally interpretable approaches for identifying stretch reflex thresholds (SRTs) remain limited. We present an ultrasound-derived method for quantifying SRTs during controlled tendon tapping by tracking tendon-to-bone (T2B) displacement, which reflects local musculotendon deformation. Ten individuals with chronic stroke participated. A LinMot tapper delivered graded mechanical taps to the distal biceps tendon. A B-mode ultrasound probe integrated into the tapper tip

Spike Timing-Dependent Plasticity in the Long-Latency Stretch Reflex Following Paired Stimulation from a Wearable Electronic Device.

UNLABELLED: The long-latency stretch reflex (LLSR) in human elbow muscles probably depends on multiple pathways; one possible contributor is the reticulospinal tract. Here we attempted to induce plastic changes in the LLSR by pairing noninvasive stimuli that are known to activate reticulospinal pathways, at timings predicted to cause spike timing-dependent plasticity in the brainstem. In healthy human subjects, reflex responses in flexor muscles were recorded following extension perturbations at the elbow. Subjects were then fitted with a portable device that delivered auditory click stimuli t

Changes in stretch reflex excitability are related to "giving way" symptoms in patients with anterior cruciate ligament rupture.

A rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) usually leads to an altered stretch reflex excitability of the thigh muscles that stabilize the knee. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess reflex activity in the m. semitendinosus/semimembranosus after anterior tibial translation in 21 patients with isolated ACL ruptures. The patients were divided into a group with "giving way" symptoms (noncopers, n = 12) and a group without "giving way" symptoms (copers, n = 9). While the patients were standing upright with 30 degrees knee flexion, a force of 300 N was applied to the knee to
