Small refractive errors--their correction and practical importance.

Small refractive errors present a group of specifc far-sighted refractive dispositions that are compensated by enhanced accommodative exertion and aren't exhibited by loss of the visual acuity. This paper should answer a few questions about their correction, flowing from theoretical presumptions and expectations of this dilemma. The main goal of this research was to (dis)confirm the hypothesis about convenience, efficiency and frequency of the correction that do not raise the visual acuity (or if the improvement isn't noticeable). The next goal was to examine the connection between this correc

[Management of unilateral refractive errors with contact lenses].

The degree of aniseikonia with the correction of unilateral aphakia is mathematically and clinically much greater with glasses than with contact lenses. It is not possible to estimate the resulting aniseikonia on an individual basis from calculating the right-to-left difference between the retinal image sizes. However, both calculation of the differences between the retinal image sizes and the aniseikonia point out the advantage of contact lenses. Unilateral axial myopia (more than 90% of anisomyopias are axial) shows the smallest differences between retinal image sizes for glasses; however, m

Refractive Error in Inherited Retinal Disease.

PURPOSE: Inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) lead to significant vision impairment. Refractive errors (REs) are also associated with vision impairment and an increased risk of ocular comorbidities and may compound impairment caused by IRDs. Identifying the pattern of RE in IRDs may assist in better management of patients with IRD and provide insights into understanding genetic associations with RE. The aim of this study was to investigate the patterns of RE in patients with IRD from three academic ophthalmology referral centers. DESIGN: Retrospective multicenter cohort study. METHODS: Chart

Is refractive error a factor affecting scoliosis?

BACKGROUND: Scoliosis is one of the most common surgical disorders of the pediatric spine. Refractive errors are commonly associated with vision impairment worldwide. However, it is currently unclear whether refractive error correlates directly with the development of scoliosis. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in 2023, and a stratified cluster sampling technique was employed among school-aged students in Nantong City, China. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to investigate specific correlations between scoliosis and related parameters; various t

Refractive error in unilateral Duane syndrome.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether chronic co-contraction of the medial and lateral rectus muscles leads to higher against-the-rule astigmatism in affected versus fellow eyes in Duane syndrome. METHODS: A database of 4,103 patients of Dr. Arthur Jampolsky was queried for diagnosis of Duane syndrome. Inclusion criteria were unilateral Duane syndrome and complete data set. Refractive error was compared between Duane and fellow eyes. RESULTS: A total of 84 patients with unilateral Duane syndrome were identified. The spherical equivalent of Duane eyes and fellow eyes was similar (0.4 vs. 0.2 [P = 0

The biological basis of myopic refractive error.

Myopia is among the most common refractive errors and is associated with the greatest risk of pathological outcomes. Most animals, including humans, are born with hyperopic errors. During development, axial elongation of the eye occurs and is regulated through a vision-dependent process, known as emmetropisation The extremely rapid changes in the prevalence of myopia and the dependence of myopia on the level of education indicate that there are very strong environmental impacts on the development of myopia. This conflicts with the common occurrence of familial patterns of inheritance of myopia

Alloplastic implants for the correction of refractive errors.

Convex-shaped, hydrophilic lenticles of various water content were implanted into microkeratome-dissected corneal pockets in a baboon model. Freshly trephined, cryolathed, and factory-lathed hydrogels were evaluated for periods exceeding 15 months, documenting clinical response, corneal curvature shifts, and morphologic features. Previously implanted hydrogels were subsequently removed, documenting the reversibility of the procedure while allowing the corneas to return to their preoperative condition. Various alloplastic materials were then reimplanted into the same intrastromal pockets. Mediu

Cataract: refractive error, diabetes, and morphology.

A retrospective analysis of 388 records of patients undergoing surgery for cataract between the years 1968 and 1978 showed that more women than men were admitted. About 13.7% of the patients were diabetic, and there was a striking excess of women over men with diabetes and cataract. The diabetic patients required surgery at an earlier age than the non-diabetics. Patients who had been refracted at least 5 years before surgery showed an incidence of myopia of -1.00 D or more of 25.4%. In 34% of the whole series the aphakic refraction was less than +11.00 D, again suggesting that myopes are more

Refractive errors occurring with tilt of intraocular lenses.

A thin lens technique was developed to determine how the effective powers of toric monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are influenced by tilt and the refractive errors associated with the tilt. A series of steps determined the effective power of the cornea at the IOL, the IOL power, the effective power of the tilted IOL, the correction required at the front of the eye and the power of an IOL that would compensate for the tilt. The correction was determined by starting at the ideal reduced image vergence at the IOL, backwards raytracing to obtain a reduced image vergence at the cornea, and subt

Effect of peripheral refractive errors on driving performance.

The effect of peripheral refractive errors on driving while performing secondary tasks at 40° of eccentricity was studied in thirty-one young drivers. They drove a driving simulator under 7 different induced peripheral refractive errors (baseline (0D), spherical lenses of +/- 2D, +/- 4D and cylindrical lenses of +2D and +4D). Peripheral visual acuity and contrast sensitivity were also evaluated at 40°. Driving performance was significantly impaired by the addition of myopic defocus (4D) and astigmatism (4D). Worse driving significantly correlated with worse contrast sensitivity for the route i

[Extreme (complicated, ultra-high) refractive errors: terminological misconceptions!?].

The article reviews development mechanisms of different refractive errors accompanied by marked defocus of light rays reaching the retina. Terminology used for such ametropias includes terms extreme, ultra-high and complicated. Justification of their usage for primary ametropias, whose symptom complex is based on changes in axial eye length, is an ongoing discussion. To comply with thesaurus definitions of 'diagnosis' and 'pathogenesis', to characterize refractive and anatomical-functional disorders in patients with primary ametropias it is proposed to use the terms 'hyperaxial and hypoaxial s

Child development and refractive errors in preschool children.

PURPOSE: Many parents are concerned about their child's development. The purpose of this study is to determine whether parental concerns about overall development are associated with significant refractive errors among urban preschool children. METHODS: A cross-sectional population-based study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of ocular disorders in white and African American children aged 6 through 71 months in Baltimore, Maryland. A comprehensive eye examination with cycloplegic refraction was performed. Parental concerns about development were measured with the Parents' Evaluation o

Refractive errors and visual anomalies in Down syndrome.

A comparatively high incidence of ocular and orbital abnormalities has been reported in persons with Down syndrome. Eighty six children (50% male, 50% female) with Down syndrome in several institutions for individuals with learning difficulties (age range 5-18 years, mean 12.5) were examined for visual impairment in order to relate the ocular impairment to the level of learning difficulty. 6% had mild, 7% moderate, 45% severe and 42% profound learning difficulty. 9% of the children had no refractive errors. A significant (P < 0.01) positive correlation was found between progressive amounts of

Refractive errors in young children with Down syndrome.

Significant refractive errors are common among older children and adults with Down syndrome. We examined infants and children with Down syndrome to determine the prevalence of these errors at younger ages. Noncycloplegic retinoscopy was used to determine the refractive state of 92 infants and children with Down syndrome, aged 4 months to 12 years. The results for infants show a similar distribution of refractive errors in patients with Down syndrome and an age-matched control group. However, rather than a narrower distribution for the older age groups, as is the case with the controls, the dis

[Amblyopia, refractive errors and strabismus in congenital ptosis].

The incidence of amblyopia in the normal population is 2-6%, whereas among patients with congenital ptosis it can be as high as 50%. We reviewed 146 cases of congenital ptosis in patients aged between 5 months and 15 years and compared them to a control group of 34 age- and sex-matched patients. In 78 children (156 eyes) reliable optotype visual acuity could be obtained. Fifty-three eyes (34%) were amblyopic. Ametropia was responsible for 34% and anisometropia for 28.3% of the amblyopia cases. In 25.4% of cases strabismus, and in 11.34% stimulus deprivation, was the reason for the development
