[An outbreak of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 dysentery in a refugee camp in Rwanda].

As a consequence of the civil war that devastated Burundi in October 1993, more than 300,000 refugees settled in the neighboring country of Rwanda. We describe the outbreak of dysentery due to Shigella dysenteriae type 1 (Sd1) that developed in Nzangwa, a camp hosting some 20,000 Burundese refugees. Between November 17, 1993 and March 10, 1994, 6,122 cases of bloody diarrhea were notified by the health information system of the camp. The overall attack rate was 32.3%, and the fatality rate was 3.8%. Children under five years of age were the most affected group of the population. All dysentery

Prevalence of Leishmania infection in refugee camps: A serological and molecular study in Gambella and Benishangul-Gumuz, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis, transmitted by sandflies, causes a severe health threat in East African refugee camps. High mobility, poor conditions and limited healthcare access heighten the risk of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) among refugees. Though, data on infection prevalence is remains limited. This study aims to determine the prevalence of Leishmania infection in refugee camps in Benishangul Gumuz and Gambella regions to improve VL detection and guide effective control strategies in humanitarian settings. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from May to August 2023 in four refugee

Health needs of refugees: port of arrival versus permanent camp settings.

BACKGROUND: The world's refugee population has surpassed 21 million, the large majority of which resides in developing countries. Refugees have relatively high rates of healthcare utilization for management of both long-term needs, such as diabetes, and acute conditions, such as scabies. AIMS: Using interviews of stakeholders in disparate healthcare settings, we aim to elucidate both common themes and areas of difference that should be recognized and addressed as the refugee crisis continues. METHODS: This qualitative interview study compares and contrasts two settings for healthcare provisi

Management of an outbreak of meningococcal meningitis in a Sudanese refugee camp in Northern Uganda.

We describe an outbreak of meningitis at a Sudanese refugee camp in Northern Uganda that lasted over a year from February 1994. Some 291 cases occurred in a refugee population of 96860 (averaged over the year), an attack rate of 0.30%. The case fatality rate was 13.3%. From a small number of samples taken for culture N. meningitidis serogroup A, serotype 21:P1.9, clone III-1 was identified as the causative organism. The outbreak started in the camp's reception centre which had the highest attack rate. Spread from the reception centre was rapid and the epidemic reached its peak within 3 weeks.

Mass vaccination with a two-dose oral cholera vaccine in a refugee camp.

In refugee settings, the use of cholera vaccines is controversial since a mass vaccination campaign might disrupt other priority interventions. We therefore conducted a study to assess the feasibility of such a campaign using a two-dose oral cholera vaccine in a refugee camp. The campaign, using killed whole-cell/recombinant B-subunit cholera vaccine, was carried out in October 1997 among 44,000 south Sudanese refugees in Uganda. Outcome variables included the number of doses administered, the drop-out rate between the two rounds, the proportion of vaccine wasted, the speed of administration,

Impact of a mass vaccination campaign against a meningitis epidemic in a refugee camp.

Serogroup A meningococcus epidemics occurred in refugee populations in Zaire in August 1994. The paper analyses the public health impact of a mass vaccination campaign implemented in a large refugee camp. We compared meningitis incidence rates from 2 similar camps. In Kibumba camp, vaccination was implemented early in the course of the epidemic whilst in the control camp (Katale), vaccination was delayed. At a threshold of 15 cases per 100 000 population per week an immunization campaign was implemented. Attack rates were 94 and 134 per 100,000 in Kibumba and Katale respectively over 2 months.

Economic impact of a large-scale scabies upsurge on healthcare facilities in Rohingya refugee camps: A retrospective costing study.

Scabies is one of the common infectious skin conditions globally, with a significantly high burden in hot and tropical countries, and resource-poor settings. Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar are one of the most protracted refugee crises in the world, sheltering approximately 1,143,096 refugees. While most existing literature focuses on mass drug administration (MDA) interventions or community-level estimates, the economic burden of scabies on health system is rarely studied. This is a retrospective costing study, where we used financial and epidemiological data from January 2021 to Decemb

[Epidemic of bacillary dysentery in the Rwanda refugee camps of the Goma region (Zaire, North Kivu) in August 1994].

The authors describe the extension of an outbreak of bacillary dysentery among the Rwandese populations seeking refuge in the region of Goma, Zaire in august 1994. Analysis of the epidemiological surveillance data and of the bacteriological laboratory results of the Bioforce, show that this epidemic was probably facilitated by the preceding cholera outbreak. In such circumstances, rapid sterilization of the virus reservoir, by short course treatments, might be beneficial in limiting the extension of the epidemic.

[Antibiotic sensitivity to epidemic strains of Vibrio cholerae and Shigella dysenteriae 1 isolated in Rwandan refugee camps in Zaire].

Multiresistance or epidemic enteric bacteria to antibiotics greatly complicates treatment, and in some cases prophylaxis, of severe invasive gastroenteritis. During the summer of 1994, two epidemics of diarrhea, one due to Vibrio cholerae and the other to Shigella dysenteriae 1 isolated from the Goma and Bukavu camps was determined by measurement of the Agar Minimal Inhibitory Concentration. Multiresistance to tetracyclins, aminopenicillins, trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole, and nifuroxazide was observed. After intensive treatment mutant forms of both bacteria resistant to nalidixic acid rapidly a

Iron deficiency, anemia and association with refugee camp exposure among recently resettled refugees: A Canadian retrospective cohort study.

Malnutrition and poor health are common among recently resettled refugees and may be differentially associated with pre-migration exposure to refugee camp versus non-camp dwelling. We aimed to investigate the associations of iron deficiency (ID), anemia, and ID anemia (IDA) with pre-migration refugee camp exposure among recently arrived refugees to Canada. To this end, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of 1032 adult refugees who received care between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2015, within a specialized refugee health clinic in Calgary, Canada. We evaluated the prevalence, sever

Psychosocial and emotional well-being of Syrian refugee children and adolescents in Jordan: In-camp versus out-of-camp comparative analysis.

There is a notable gap in understanding how different living arrangements influence the psychosocial and emotional well-being of Syrian refugee children and adolescents. Moreover, limited literature exists on the comparison between in-camp and out-of-camp living situations. The aim of this study was to compare the psychosocial and emotional status between camp and non-camp Syrian refugee children and adolescents living in Jordan. A nationwide school survey was conducted in Jordan from December 2022 to April 2023 and targeted children (8-11 years) and adolescents (12-18 years), encompassing Jor

Determinants of maternal health service utilisation among refugee women in Krisan and Ampain camps, Ghana: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal healthcare utilization among refugee populations remains a major public health concern due to intersecting social, structural, and health system barriers. Guided by Andersen's Healthcare Utilization Theory (1995), this study examined the determinants of antenatal care, skilled delivery, and postnatal care among refugee women in Ghana. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 410 refugee women aged 15-49 years residing in the Krisan and Ampain refugee camps in the Western Region of Ghana. Eligible women who had experienced a pregnancy within the prec

[Malacologic-schistosomal study of the refugee camps on the Plain of Ruzizi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo].

Bilharziasis due to Schistosoma mansoni is widespread in the eastern part of the People's Republic of the Congo, particularly in the Ruzizi plain area. The intermediate host is the fresh-water snail Biomphalaria pfeifferi whose ecology is now well documented. Bilharziasis due to Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma intercalatum have not yet been observed but the potential for this development is high given the presence of the intermediate hosts, i.e. Bulinus truncatus, Bulinus globosus, and Bulinus forskalii, and the migration of populations in the area.
