Linkage of AIDS and cancer registries in Italy.

We report the first results of a comparison between the Italian Registry on AIDS (RAIDS) and 13 population-based cancer registries (about 8 million population in 1991) with respect to the notification of Kaposi's sarcoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Routine indicators of data quality and completeness have been found in both types of registry, consistent with the best international standards. A linkage process was carried out on about 339,000 cancer notifications and 3,134 AIDS notifications and was herein restricted to individuals under the age of 50. Out of 243 Kaposi's sarcomas at either type

Normalized breast cancer survival outcomes in U.S. tumor registries.

BACKGROUND: This study normalized the National Cancer Database (NCDB) and Surveillance, Epidemiology, End Results Program (SEER) populations to mirror the USCS population and examined survival outcomes in breast cancer following normalization. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with stage I-IV breast cancer (2010-2018) were selected from the NCDB and SEER. Rates obtained from the USCS were used to normalize the NCDB and SEER cohorts, using patient weighted frequencies for variables (age, sex, race/ethnicity, etc). Overall survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method before and after normaliz

Establishing cancer registries in Africa - focus on hepatopancreatobiliary cancers.

Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) cancers are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in Africa, where the risk factors, tumour characteristics, treatment-related factors and survival outcomes are poorly characterized. Despite the high incidence and mortality rates of HPB cancers in Africans, there is a dearth of data on the genetic and non-genetic risk factors for HPB cancers in Africa. The incidence and mortality rates of HPB cancers in Africans can only be substantially reduced by increasing our understanding of the population-specific risk factors and potentially unique

Global certification of visual impairment registries: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Visual impairment is a global problem which is predicted to rise in the coming years. Some of the biggest causes of visual impairment globally include uncorrected refractive error, cataract and age-related macular degeneration. People with a visual impairment often require support and so many countries hold registers of visual impairment. These registers can sit at a national, regional or local level. This scoping review aims to identify which countries hold visual impairment registries and have published data from them. METHODS: Medline All, Embase and EBSCOHost were searched usi

[Registries of parathyroid glands diseases in the Russian Federation].

The most important and effective way to organize nationwide the healthcare, as well as monitoring and routing for patients with endocrine diseases, is the creation of an unified medical record (Endocard). The Endocard is also aimed at maximizing the opportunity for professionals and researchers on various scientific issues. Registries are the potential informational and analytical platform to achieve this goal. They include the basic information on the epidemiological and clinical features of the most severe diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Given the lack of large-scale epidemiological data

Validity of chronic disease diagnoses in Icelandic healthcare registries.

AIMS: To evaluate the validity of recorded chronic disease diagnoses in Icelandic healthcare registries. METHODS: Eight different chronic diseases from multiple sub-specialties of medicine were validated with respect to accuracy, but not to timeliness. For each disease, 30 patients with a recorded diagnosis and 30 patients without the same diagnosis were randomly selected from >80,000 participants in the iStopMM trial, which includes 54% of the Icelandic population born before 1976. Each case was validated by chart review by physicians using predefined criteria. RESULTS: The overall accuracy

The Importance of Patient Registries in Skin of Color.

Patient registries serve as powerful and cost-effective research tools that can help improve our understanding of disease pathogenesis and treatment. Although patient registries for various dermatologic diseases currently exist, few address diseases affecting primarily skin of color. Establishing patient registries for diseases that affect skin of color is one potential solution to overcoming some of the limitations researchers face when studying these disorders. Here, we present two patient registries in dermatology that may serve as examples of how patient registries can contribute to advanc

Using registries to identify adverse events in rheumatic diseases.

The proven effectiveness of biologics and other immunomodulatory products in inflammatory rheumatic diseases has resulted in their widespread use as well as reports of potential short- and long-term complications such as infection and malignancy. These complications are especially worrisome in children who often have serial exposures to multiple immunomodulatory products. Post-marketing surveillance of immunomodulatory products in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus is currently based on product-specific registries and passive surveillance, which may

Underreporting of myeloid malignancies by United States cancer registries.

BACKGROUND: The recent decrease in myeloid leukemia incidence may be directly attributed to changes in the population-based cancer registries 2001 guidelines, which required the capture of only one malignancy in the myeloid lineage per person and the simultaneous adoption of myelodysplastic syndrome registration in the United States. METHODS: We constructed four claims-based algorithms to assess myeloid leukemia incidence, applied the algorithms to the 1999-2008 Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER)-Medicare database, and assessed algorithm validity using SEER-registered cases. Monitoring rhGH Safety: rhGH Registries, SAGhE and Future Needs.

The safety of growth hormone (GH) therapy in children has been studied extensively. The identification of Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease in individuals who received pituitary-derived GH led to heightened surveillance for safety issues related to recombinant human GH (rhGH). An excellent safety profile of rhGH has been demonstrated in large Phase IV registries comprising > 600,000 patient-years of rhGH exposure and long-term safety cohorts of adults treated with GH as children. Increased mortality risk has been reported but eliminated when corrected for small size at birth. Increased risk of mortali

Pregnancy registries: what do they mean to clinical practice?

Multiple surveillance pregnancy registries have been established in order to better understand the effects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) on pregnancy. These registries are either hospital based, population based, or pharmaceutical based and are primarily focused on the potential teratogenicity of AEDs. The main outcome variable for most of these registries is the risk of major congenital malformations. Registries also gather data on other aspects of pregnancy, including seizure control. The methodology of the registries varies. They have different populations, ascertainment strategies, follow-

Validation of family history data in cancer family registries.

BACKGROUND: Although family history information on cancer is used to infer risk of the disease in population-based, case-control, cohort, or family-based studies, little information is available on the accuracy of a proband's report. In this study, we sought to determine the validity of the reporting of family history of cancer by probands in population-based and clinic-based family registries of breast, ovarian, and colorectal cancers. METHODS: To assess the accuracy of probands' reported family history of cancer in their relatives, we compared the family history from the personal interview
