First decade of research on constrained-induced treatment approaches for aphasia rehabilitation.

Approaches for treating poststroke language impairments (aphasia) based on constraint-induced (CI) principles were first introduced in 2001. CI principles as previously applied to upper extremity and locomotor retraining in stroke survivors were derived from basic neuroscience. They comprise forced-use of the affected modality, a gradual rebuilding of targeted functions using a highly intensive treatment protocol, administered in a behaviorally relevant context. CI-based approaches have stimulated considerable neurorehabilitation research interest in the past decade. The original CI aphasia tr

Manual wheelchairs: Research and innovation in rehabilitation, sports, daily life and health.

Those with lower limb disabilities are often dependent on manually propelled wheelchairs for their mobility, in Europe today some 3.3 million people. This implies a transfer from leg to arm work for ambulation and all other activities of daily living (ADL). Compared to the legs, arm work is less efficient and more straining, and leads to a lower physical capacity. Also, there is a major risk of mechanical overuse. Problems of long-term wheelchair use are not only pain or discomfort, but also a risk of a physically inactive lifestyle. Subsequently, serious secondary impairments (obesity, diabet

Research on upper limb rehabilitation assessment model based on belief rule base.

Rehabilitation assessments hold an irreplaceable role in the field of rehabilitative therapy. However, due to the subjectivity of traditional physicians and the variability of patient conditions, this leads to a lack of detailed grading and inaccurate assessment results. To address this issue, we developed an upper limb rehabilitation evaluation model. This model integrates muscle strength assessment methods and the Belief Rule Base (BRB), along with qualitative knowledge such as clinical rehabilitation theories and expert experiences. It also utilizes training data from actual patients, colle

Challenges and Research Opportunities for Integrating Quantitative Electroencephalography Into Sports Concussion Rehabilitation.

Although concussion management and return to play/learn decision making focuses on reducing symptoms, there is growing interest in objective physiological approaches to treatment. Clinical and technological advancements have aided concussion management; however, the scientific study of the neurophysiology of concussion has not translated into its standard of care. This expert commentary is motivated by novel clinical applications of electroencephalographic-based neurofeedback approaches (eg, quantitative electroencephalography [QEEG]) for treating traumatic brain injury and emerging research i

New Directions for Oral Submucous Fibrosis Research: Whole Evaluation for Holistic Rehabilitation!

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is an oral potentially malignant disorder (OPMD) associated with prolonged betel-quid (BQ) use. It affects both physiological and psychological dimensions, leading to a significant morbidity. Some challenges in OSF research include: Assessment and correction of: (i) Quality of life, (ii) burning sensation, and (iii) nutritional deficiency. There are numerous medical treatments for OSF, but most of them fail to offer complete rehabilitation. This is because some underpinnings of this condition like "mental factors" that contribute to habit continuation at root leve

Robotics and virtual reality: a perfect marriage for motor control research and rehabilitation.

This article's goal is to outline the motivations, progress, and future objectives for the development of a state-of-the-art device that allows humans to visualize and feel synthetic objects superimposed on the physical world. The programming flexibility of these devices allows for a variety of scientific questions to be answered in psychology, neurophysiology, rehabilitation, haptics, and automatic control. The benefits are most probable in rehabilitation of brain-injured patients, for whom the costs are high, therapist time is limited, and repetitive practice of movements has been shown to b

Strength-training exercise in dysphagia rehabilitation: principles, procedures, and directions for future research.

Dysphagia rehabilitation, historically, has focused a great deal on various compensations during swallowing to prevent aspiration and/or improve safety and efficiency. Exercise, in general, has been a part of the dysphagia rehabilitation landscape. However, heightened discussions in the field regarding best practices for exercise training, particularly strengthening, raise more questions than answers. The intent of this paper is to (1) explore the overriding principles of neuromuscular plasticity with regard to strength training, (2) evaluate how current exercise-training interventions in dysp
