Technical note: A comparison between rehydrating solutions in the pretreatment of mummified and corified skin for forensic microscopic examination.

Microscopic examination of mummified or corified skin may be of extreme importance for forensic purposes. However, standard histological samples in these cases are low-end, and preparation is burdened by several problems and so are diagnostic results: an improvement of these types of specimens is therefore advantageous. This study aims to identify the best performing rehydration solution among a fabric softener, a body lotion, and Sandison's rehydrating solution. Samples of skin undergoing mummification or corification were collected from 25 corpses and each sample was divided into 4 fragments

Lower Rate of Water Absorption of an Oral Rehydration Solution with Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum in Conscious Rats.

The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the rate of water absorption of an oral rehydration solution containing partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) in the small intestine, which is the main site of water absorption when water is drunk. Seven-week-old male SD rats were employed. We prepared four types of an aqueous solution, i.e., containing mineral and sugar, containing PHGG, containing mineral and sugar and PHGG, or containing no additives. After 24 h of food and 4 h of water deprivation, the aqueous solutions were infused into the stomach of conscious rats on their hands using a s

Pyruvate-Enriched Oral Rehydration Solution Improves Glucometabolic Disorders in the Kidneys of Diabetic db/db Mice.

Diabetes is prevalent worldwide, but ideally intensive therapeutic strategy in clinical diabetes and diabetic nephropathy (DN) is still lack. Pyruvate is protective from glucometabolic disturbances and kidney dysfunction in various pathogenic insults. Present studies focused on oral pyruvate effects on diabetes status and DN with 0.35% pyruvate in pyruvate-enriched oral rehydration solution (Pyr-ORS) and 1% pyruvate as drinking water for 8 weeks, using the model of diabetic db/db mice. Both Pyr-ORS and 1% pyruvate showed comparable therapeutic effectiveness with controls of body weight and blo

A comparative analysis of three distinct rehydrating solutions for addressing liver tissue desiccation resulting from dehydration failure.

BACKGROUND: The tissue dehydration process is an important step in pathology specimen preparation. Dehydration failure, caused by equipment malfunction, incorrect program settings, or operator error, is a recognized problem in laboratory practice and can compromise the quality of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) slides, thereby hindering subsequent pathological diagnosis. Common ad hoc responses include stepwise rehydration or short-term immersion in various buffers. However, information on repairing over-desiccated specimens is limited, and there is little systematic evidence comparing different r

A new palatable oral rehydration solution: A randomised controlled cross-over study in patients with a high output stoma.

BACKGROUND: Patients with a jejunostomy or high output stoma may need a glucose-sodium oral rehydration solution drink to maintain hydration. These solutions are unpalatable and a new flavoured pre-packaged solution was developed. METHODS: After 8 h of fasting, 27 patients took 500 mL of the modified World Health Organization (WHO) cholera solution or Glucodrate® (Vitaflo) on two occasions in a cross-over random order and urine and stomal output was collected for 6 h. RESULTS: There was a small but significant difference in net sodium absorption in favour of the modified WHO cholera solution

Water, mineral, and blood acid-base balance in calves with naturally occurring diarrhea receiving two alternative oral rehydration solutions or a placebo.

Quantifying the water and mineral losses in feces is essential to determine the optimal composition of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) for diarrheic animals. In a randomized complete block design, this study evaluated water, mineral, and blood acid-base balance of calves with naturally occurring diarrhea receiving ORS or a placebo. On d 0, 45 calves (age: 18 ± 3.2 d; mean ± SD) were selected based on the presence of visual signs of diarrhea, such as dirty tail or wet feces, along with clinical symptoms evaluated by measuring the skin turgor and the degree of enophthalmos. On d 1, calves were

Enteral resuscitation with oral rehydration solution to reduce acute kidney injury in burn victims: Evidence from a porcine model.

Intravenous (IV) resuscitation of burn patients has greatly improved outcomes and become a cornerstone of modern burn care. However, the heavy fluids and vascular access required may not be feasible in austere environments, mass casualty, or delayed transport scenarios. Enteral resuscitation has been proposed for these situations; we sought to examine the effectiveness of this strategy on improving burn-induced kidney injury. Anesthetized Yorkshire swine sustaining 40% TBSA full-thickness contact burns were randomized to three groups (n = 6/group): fluid deprivation, ad libitum water access, o

Change of plasma volume, osmolality, and acid-base status in healthy calves after feeding of milk and water- and milk-based oral rehydration solutions.

Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) are a simple and cheap method to treat diarrheal dehydration and acidosis. To maintain the energy supply of diarrheic calves, it is necessary to continue milk feeding. Suckling of milk or milk-based or hypertonic water-based ORS produces a slower rate of abomasal emptying than suckling isotonic water-based ORS. The faster abomasal passage of isotonic water-based ORS implies that efficacious electrolytes reach the gut more quickly, possibly providing a faster rate of rehydration. The aim of the study was to verify when and to what extent milk and water- and milk

Effects of long-term dehydration and quick rehydration on the camel kidney: pathological changes and modulation of the expression of solute carrier proteins and aquaporins.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent dehydration causes chronic kidney disease in humans and animal models. The dromedary camel kidney has remarkable capacity to preserve water and solute during long-term dehydration. In this study, we investigated the effects of dehydration and subsequent rehydration in the camel's kidney histology/ultrastructure and changes in aquaporin/solute carrier proteins along with gene expression. RESULTS: In light microscopy, dehydration induced few degenerative and necrotic changes in cells of the cortical tubules with unapparent or little effect on medullary cells. The ultrastru

Comparison of the effects of an isosmolar and hyperosmolar oral rehydrating solution on the hydration status, glycemia and ileal content composition of healthy neonatal calves.

Isosmolar oral rehydrating solutions (ORS) used to treat diarrheic calves are low in energy. In contrast, hyperosmolar ORS may have a dehydrating effect. This study was designed to compare the net water and glucose absorption from the small intestine of normal calves given isosmolar or hyperosmolar ORS. Six calves were used for the experiment. A reentrant ileal cannula was implanted surgically. Each calf was fed with either the isosmolar or the hyperosmolar solution. The next day, the second solution was given. Both contained chromium EDTA as a nonabsorbable marker. Changes in the hematocrit,

Pilot Study Comparing 2 Oral Rehydration Solutions in Patients With Short Bowel Syndrome Receiving Home Parenteral Nutrition: A Prospective Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a common indication for home parenteral nutrition (HPN). Oral rehydration solutions (ORSs) have the ability to supplement or reduce HPN dependence. However, ORSs have suffered from poor taste profiles, making long-term consumption and compliance unlikely. The goal of the current study was to assess the taste and compliance of 2 ORSs among patients with SBS requiring HPN. METHODS: All participants with SBS receiving HPN with anticipated duration >3 months were offered enrollment: 31 participants met inclusion criteria; 3 declined enrollment; and 28 wer

Role of Preoperative Oral Rehydration Solution on Myocardial Ischaemia During Orthopaedic Surgery under Spinal Anaesthesia: A Prospective Randomised Study.

OBJECTIVE: Preoperative oral rehydration solution (ORS) supplementation offers wide postoperative benefits, but its role in reducing post-spinal myocardial ischaemia is uncertain. We evaluated this aspect in elective lower limb orthopaedic surgeries and compared it to conventional preoperative fasting. METHODS: Prospectively, we randomised 126 patients aged >60 years into two groups: (A) received reconstituted ORS (1000 mL) during the overnight preoperative fasting, continued up to 2 hrs prior to spinal anaesthesia (SA) induction; (B) kept on conventional overnight preoperative fasting. Pyruvate Is Superior to Citrate in Oral Rehydration Solution in the Protection of Intestine via Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1 Activation in Rats With Burn Injury.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that pyruvate-enriched oral rehydration solution (Pyr-ORS) may be superior to the standard bicarbonate-based ORS in the protection of intestine from ischemic injury. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of Pyr-ORS with citrate-enriched ORS (Cit-ORS) on the intestinal hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1)-erythropoietin (EPO) signaling pathway for enteral rehydration in a rat model of burn injury. METHODS: Rats were randomly assigned to 4 groups (N = 20, 2 subgroups each: n = 10): scald sham (group SS), scald with no fluid resuscitation (group

Evaluation and comparison of efficacy of three different storage media, coconut water, propolis, and oral rehydration solution, in maintaining the viability of periodontal ligament cells.

BACKGROUND: Two of the most critical factors affecting the prognosis of an avulsed tooth after replantation are extra oral dry time and the storage medium in which the tooth is placed before treatment is rendered. However, the ability of a storage/transport medium to support cell viability can be more important than the extra oral time to prevent ankylosis and replacement resorption. AIM: Purpose of this study was evaluation and comparison of efficacy of a new storage medium, oral rehydration solution (ORS) with coconut water, and propolis in maintaining the viability of periodontal ligament
