The effects of work-reinforcer schedules on skill acquisition for children with autism.

This study evaluated the effects of continuous and discontinuous work-reinforcer schedule arrangements on skill acquisition for three students with autism. Participants were initially exposed to both schedules in an alternating schedules condition where they were taught different but equivalent skills for each schedule. In the discontinuous schedule condition, participants completed work in small increments to gain access to a reinforcer for short periods of time. In the continuous schedule condition, participants completed larger increments of work to gain longer access to a reinforcer. Resul

Primary and secondary reinforcers in performance of a 1.0-mile walk/jog by adolescents with moderate mental retardation.

Based on visual inspection of data, reinforcement procedures, namely, use of verbal praise and verbal praise plus token exchange, were at least mildly influential in improving performance of 5 youth with moderate mental retardation compared to their initial performance without reinforcers. These findings suggest specific reinforcement may improve the time for aerobic activity by adolescents with moderate mental retardation.

"All in the Day's Work": Cold War Doctoring and Its Discontents in William Burroughs's Naked Lunch.

In Naked Lunch, the institutions and practices of science and medicine, specifically with regard to psychiatry/psychology, are symptoms of a bureaucratic system of control that shapes, constructs, defines, and makes procrustean alterations to both the mind and body of human subjects. Using sickness and junk (or heroin) as convenient metaphors for both a Cold War binary mentality and the mandatory consumption of twentieth-century capitalism, Burroughs presents modern man as fundamentally alienated from any sense of a personal self. Through policing the health of citizens, the doctors are some o

Using differential reinforcement and extinction to increase specificity in cheetah scat detection dogs.

Detection dogs are trained using limited samples and then expected to generalize this ability to recognize wild samples while maintaining specificity to a target category. Such specificity is critical because dogs are often used to locate targets that are difficult to visually identify. Little is known about how to regain target specificity when false alerts become frequent or established. This case study assessed the training of two conservation dogs that alerted to off-target caracal (Caracal caracal) and leopard (Panthera pardus) scat samples during training to detect cheetah (Acinonyx juba

Weaver mutant mice exhibit long-term learning deficits under several measures of instrumental behavior.

Homozygous weaver mutant mice (wv/wv) exhibit symptoms that parallel Parkinson's disease, including motor deficits and the destruction of dopaminergic neurons as well as degeneration in the cerebellum and hippocampus. To develop a more complete behavioral profile of these organisms, groups of wv/wv, wv/+ mice and C57BL/6 mice were observed on a within-subjects basis under a fixed-interval schedule of reinforcement, a differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate-of-responding schedule, and a discrimination task in which a saccharin solution and tap water were concurrently available from two food cups

Reinforcement value and fixed-interval performance.

The concept of reinforcement value summarizes the effect of different variables, such as reinforcement delay, reinforcement magnitude, and deprivation level, on behavior. In the present set of experiments, we evaluated the effect of reinforcement devaluation on performance under FI schedules. The literature on timing and reinforcement value suggests that devaluation generates longer expected times to reinforcement than the same intervals trained under control conditions. We devalued reinforcement with delay in Experiments 1A, 1B, and 2, and diminished deprivation in Experiments 3A and 3B. Deva

Establishment of etonitazene as a reinforcer for rats by use of schedule-induced drinking.

Drinking of etonitazene HCl by 6 rats was studied during daily 4-hr sessions. Five related experiments were conducted sequentially. In the first experiment schedule-induced polydipsia was established. Subsequently, etonitazene concentrations (1.25, 2.5 and 5.0 microgram/ml) were substituted for water, and intake of large quantities of the drug occurred. In the second experiment the concurrent food reinforcement schedule was discontinued and lever presses maintained by etonitazene (5 microgram/ml) persisted. In the third experiment the number of lever presses, required per dipper presentation o

Recent developments and future directions for competing stimulus assessments.

Competing stimulus assessments (CSAs) are designed to identify stimuli that reduce challenging behavior through reinforcer competition or substitution. Haddock and Hagopian (2020) found that CSAs demonstrate utility across functions and topographies of challenging behavior. Stimuli identified by CSAs often performed similarly in validation tests. Since that review, augmented CSA (A-CSA) procedures have demonstrated efficacy in identifying greater numbers of competing stimuli compared with free-access tests. Given these rapid advancements, another review appears warranted. The current review an

A survey for deep reinforcement learning in markovian cyber-physical systems: Common problems and solutions.

Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) is increasingly applied in cyber-physical systems for automation tasks. It is important to record the developing trends in DRL's applications to help researchers overcome common problems using common solutions. This survey investigates trends seen within two applied settings: motor control tasks, and resource allocation tasks. The common problems include intractability of the action space, or state space, as well as hurdles associated with the prohibitive cost of training systems from scratch in the real-world. Real-world training data is sparse and difficult

The motivational properties of schedule-induced polydipsia.

Schedule-induced polydipsia occurred during initial magazine training to Noyes pellets (45 mg), disappeared when lever-pressing was acquired on a continuous reinforcement schedule (CRF), and reappeared when the food contingency was changed to a 1-min variable interval schedule (VI 1 min). Polydipsia also developed under a VI 1 min food schedule when water was concurrently available on various fixed ratios (FR), rather than being freely available. The level of the polydipsia and its motivating properties allow it to be classified as a form of adjunctive behavior.

Reward-induced endogenous pain inhibition scales with action-outcome certainty in humans.

Endogenous pain modulation is believed to encompass a crucial evolutionary purpose in guiding decision-making away from harm. This is well exemplified by the idea that mechanisms of learning through error correction and endogenous pain modulation are inherently intertwined. However, adaptive behavior requires more than learning through error correction. Biological environments are volatile, which can cause decision-makers to be uncertain about what actions lead to rewards or punishments. Evidence on how uncertainty in action-outcome distributions impacts endogenous pain modulation is lacking.

The theory of preloading: A cognitive-behavioural motivational model.

Preloading of alcohol and/or drugs before an event has been examined in the research literature for the past two decades. Despite the considerable interest and scrutiny on the behaviour, there are limited, if any, attempts to conceptualise a theoretical understanding of why people preload before an event. Here we propose a Theory of Preloading (TOP)-a general cognitive-behavioural motivational model for alcohol and drug preloading. This conceptualisation reviewed and borrowed relevant cognitive, motivational and behavioural constructs from previous models-i.e., the Motivational Model of Alcoho

Reinforcement learning in ophthalmology: potential applications and challenges to implementation.

Reinforcement learning is a subtype of machine learning in which a virtual agent, functioning within a set of predefined rules, aims to maximise a specified outcome or reward. This agent can consider multiple variables and many parallel actions at once to optimise its reward, thereby solving complex, sequential problems. Clinical decision making requires physicians to optimise patient outcomes within a set practice framework and, thus, presents considerable opportunity for the implementation of reinforcement learning-driven solutions. We provide an overview of reinforcement learning, and focus

Customizing skills for assistive robotic manipulators, an inverse reinforcement learning approach with error-related potentials.

Robotic assistance via motorized robotic arm manipulators can be of valuable assistance to individuals with upper-limb motor disabilities. Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) offer an intuitive means to control such assistive robotic manipulators. However, BCI performance may vary due to the non-stationary nature of the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. It, hence, cannot be used safely for controlling tasks where errors may be detrimental to the user. Avoiding obstacles is one such task. As there exist many techniques to avoid obstacles in robotics, we propose to give the control to the robot to

Examining stereotypy in naturalistic contexts: Differential reinforcement and context-specific redirection.

This study examined stereotypy in naturalistic classroom contexts (i.e., academic programming, leisure skill acquisition) with differential reinforcement of contextually appropriate behavior (DRA). When stereotypy was problematic, redirection to the ongoing activity was provided. Contextually appropriate behavior and stereotypy were measured across all contexts prior to redirecting stereotypy to contextually appropriate behavior. Low levels of stereotypy were observed during the DRA in at least 2 contexts for all 5 participants. Context-specific redirection was added to the DRA if stereotypy p
