Social agency buffers pain sensitivity during a critical window following spared nerve injury.

BACKGROUND: Social buffering of pain, where social contact blunts pain intensity, is well established. However, the degree to which agency over social contact, rather than passive social exposure alone, modifies pain intensity or social behavior is unclear. METHODS: Using a social operant self-administration procedure in which mice lever-press for access to their pair-housed partner, we show that voluntary social engagement gates pain after spared nerve injury (SNI). After 8 days of training, mice underwent SNI and then regained access to social self-administration either 1 day (Early) or 5 d

Targeting social skills deficits in an adolescent with pervasive developmental disorder.

Social skills deficits are a defining feature of individuals diagnosed with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), which can impair functioning and put the individual at higher risk for developing problem behavior (e.g., self-injury, aggression). In the current study, an adolescent with PDD displayed inappropriate social behavior (inappropriate comments, social withdrawal, and touching others without their permission) during social interactions. An intervention using instructions, differential reinforcement, and corrective feedback successfully reduced inappropriate social b

Increasing isolate and social play in severely disturbed children: intervention and postintervention effectiveness.

A group treatment procedure was instituted in Study 1 to increase the isolate and social play of 4 severely disturbed children. The results indicated that play behavior could be increased significantly by the use of food and social reinforcement and by the use of passive shaping, but that it quickly declined when the intervention was terminated. Social play, however, did remain above baseline levels during extinction. Study 2 replicated the results of Study 1 with a second group of older children, also severely disturbed. However, the procedure of fading adult intervention proved an effective

The protective effect of operant social reward on cocaine self-administration, choice, and relapse is dependent on delay and effort for the social reward.

Social reinforcement-based treatments are effective for many, but not all, people with addictions to drugs. We recently developed an operant rat model that mimics features of one such treatment, the community-reinforcement approach. In this model, rats uniformly choose social interaction over methamphetamine or heroin. Abstinence induced by social preference protects against the incubation of drug-seeking that would emerge during forced abstinence. Here, we determined whether these findings generalize to cocaine and whether delaying or increasing effort for social interaction could reveal poss

Relationships between drinking motives and smoking expectancies among daily smokers who are also problem drinkers.

OBJECTIVE: There is a high co-occurrence of problem drinking and regular cigarette smoking, and cognitive processes (e.g., motivation to use, expectations about the consequences of use) related to each are positively associated with one another. We explored drinking motives in relation to cognitive-based smoking processes among smokers with problematic drinking. We expected that drinking coping motives would be associated with smoking consequences related to negative reinforcement and negative personal outcomes and inflexibility of smoking behavior; observed effects for coping motives would be

An analysis of vocal stereotypy and therapist fading.

A functional analysis for a boy with Down syndrome and autism suggested that vocal stereotypy was maintained by automatic reinforcement. The analysis also showed that instructions and noncontingent attention suppressed vocal stereotypy. A treatment package consisting of noncontingent attention, contingent demands, and response cost effectively reduced vocal stereotypy. The treatment package remained effective even when noncontingent attention was removed, making the procedure easier to implement. Also, the presence of the therapist in the room with the participant was faded systematically. Aft

Behavioral treatment of deviant sex-role behaviors in a male child.

This study demonstrated reinforcement control over pronounced feminine behaviors in a male child who had been psychologically evaluated as manifesting "childhood cross-gender identity". The clinical history of the subject paralleled the retrospective reports of adult transsexuals, including (a) cross-gender clothing preferences, (b) actual or imaginal use of cosmetic articles, (c) feminine behavior mannerisms, (d) aversion to masculine activities, coupled with preference for girl playmates and feminine activities, (e) preference for female role, (f) feminine voice inflection and predominantly

Effects of environmental manipulations on cocaine-vs-social choice in male and female rats.

Cocaine use disorder occurs in an environment where cocaine and other nondrug commodities are concurrently available. Preclinical drug-vs-nondrug choice procedures are one simplified method of modeling this complex clinical environment. The present study established a discrete-trial cocaine-vs-social interaction choice procedure in male and female rats and determined sensitivity of choice behavior to manipulations of reinforcer magnitude and non-contingent "sample" reinforcer presentation. Rats could make up to nine discrete choices between an intravenous cocaine infusion (0.1-1.0 mg/kg/inf) a

Mu or delta opioid receptor antagonists increase the expression of social conditioned place preference in early adolescent mice.

RATIONALE: Social behaviors undergo dramatic changes during adolescence, enabling the development of adult social abilities. These changes are intricately linked to the development of the brain reward system and the activity of endogenous opioid signaling. However, the involvement of the opioid system in the development of social behaviors still raises more questions than answers. OBJECTIVES: Here, we investigated the role of the endogenous opioid system in the rewarding effects of social contact in early and late adolescent male mice. METHODS: Social reward was assessed using the social con

Demand and cross-price elasticity of cocaine and social contact in a free-operant procedure of nonexclusive choice.

Research examining the social determinants of addiction has advanced significantly with the recent development of preclinical models of drug use and the social environment. These models reveal that drug use and social contact compete with one another for behavioral expression in discrete-trial choice procedures using concurrent schedules of reinforcement. The purpose of this study was to determine how concurrent access to cocaine and a social partner influences the demand for each alternative under free-operant conditions in which responding maintained by each reinforcer is independent and non

Incidental ostracism emerges from simple learning mechanisms.

Ostracism, or social exclusion, is widespread and associated with a range of detrimental psychological and social outcomes. Ostracism is typically explained as instrumental punishment of free-riders or deviants. However, this instrumental account fails to explain many of the features of real-world ostracism, including its prevalence. Here we hypothesized that ostracism can emerge incidentally (non-instrumentally) when people choose partners in social interactions, and that this process is driven by simple learning mechanisms. We tested this hypothesis in four experiments (n = 456) with economi

Watching the watchers: aggression observation as a window into the neural mechanisms and computations underlying social learning.

Classic experiments by Albert Bandura more than 50 years ago first illustrated that aggression is shaped not just by innate predisposition but also by social learning. In this work, human observers "mirrored" aggressive behaviors after watching aggressive demonstrators, showing that observation can lead to action imitation. Beyond imitation of aggression itself, aggression observation may be critical for updating internal models of the social world and promoting adaptive behavioral states. As the tendency to watch aggression is both ubiquitous and conserved, this highly ethological behavior is

Drug dependence: myth or motive?

The acceptability of nonmedical use for a particular drug is a function of diverse social needs. Drug dependence is due less to intrinsic effects than to the situation in which drug taking occurs. An addictive level of drug self-administration is a symptom of behavioral troubles rather than a definition of the trouble itself. The intrinsic effects of drugs do not in themselves produce either misuse or evoke specific kinds of behavior such as sexual or aggressive activities. Drugs can, however, come to function as discriminative stimuli for socially sanctioned behavior that would not under othe

Modeling and reinforcement to combat HIV: the MARCH approach to behavior change.

Theory and research suggest that behavioral interventions to prevent HIV/AIDS may be most effective when they are personalized and affectively compelling, when they provide models of desired behaviors, and when they are linked to social and cultural narratives. Effective strategies must also take into account the opportunities and obstacles present in the local environment. The Modeling and Reinforcement to Combat HIV (MARCH) projects combine key aspects of individual behavior change with efforts to change social norms. There are 2 main components to the program: entertainment as a vehicle for

Negatively-Reinforced Mands: An Examination of Resurgence to Existing Mands in Two Children With Autism and Language Delays.

In this study, we extended the literature on negatively-reinforced mands by teaching multiple novel, socially appropriate alternative mands to two young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). First, we replaced existing mands (e.g., pushing away) with two novel, socially appropriate, negatively-reinforced mands. Next, we examined responding under immediate- and delayed-reinforcement conditions to assess resurgence to existing mands and to determine whether the function of the communicative behavior influences the consistency with which different mands are emitted. Finally, we examined g

An analysis of the reinforcing properties of hand mouthing.

Hand mouthing often has been described as a stereotypic response that is maintained by nonsocial (automatic) reinforcement; however, data supporting this conclusion can be found in relatively few studies. This series of studies presents an experimental analysis of conditions associated with the maintenance of hand mouthing. In Experiment 1, a functional analysis was conducted for 12 individuals who engaged in chronic hand mouthing, to determine whether the behavior is usually maintained independent of social contingencies. Results obtained for 10 subjects were consistent with an automatic rein

Reducing chronic noncompliance in an individual with severe mental retardation to facilitate community integration.

Behavioral techniques facilitated the community integration of a young adult with severe mental retardation, which was jeopardized due to his noncompliance and severe aggression. Positive reinforcement and nonexclusionary timeout were employed to address noncompliance in his school and home environments. At school positive reinforcement was provided whenever the client walked a specified distance while either entering or leaving the school building without sitting down. If the client did sit down inappropriately, he was placed in a 5-minute nonexclusionary time-out. A similar procedure was car

Potential Reinforcement of Health Misconceptions in YouTube Videos: Example of Elbow Enthesopathy (Tennis Elbow).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the prevalence of potential reinforcement of common unhealthy misinterpretations of bodily sensations in social media (YouTube videos) addressing elbow enthesopathy (eECRB, enthesopathy of the extensor carpi radialis brevis, tennis elbow). METHODS: We recorded video metric data on 139 unique YouTube videos when searching "lateral epicondylitis" and "tennis elbow." We designed a rubric to assess the level of potential reinforcement of unhelpful thinking in videos about eECRB. Informational quality was scored with an adapted version of the DISCERN instrum

Enhanced avoidance behavior in social anxiety: evidence from a probabilistic learning task.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social phobia is characterized by avoidance of feared social situations. Although avoidance is a central feature of social anxiety, few studies have examined avoidance learning. METHODS: We used a probabilistic instrumental learning paradigm where participants had to learn by trial and error which response led to the disappearance of a neutral or angry face. 20 high socially anxious and 20 non-socially anxious individuals with an average level of social anxiety learned to avoid an angry or a neutral face by choosing one of two cues. Each of the cues led to the disap
