Relaxation therapy as a treatment for tics in patients with Tourette syndrome: a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by the presence of multiple motor and phonic tics, often associated with co-morbid behavioural problems. Tics can be modulated by environmental factors and are characteristically exacerbated by psychological stress, among other factors. This observation has led to the development of specific behavioural treatment strategies, including relaxation therapy. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to assess the efficacy of relaxation therapy to control or reduce tic symptoms in patients with TS. METHODS: We conducted a syste

[Free from stress by autogenic therapy. Relaxation technique yielding peace of mind and self-insight].

The utilisation of self-regulatory capacity is one of the purposes of autogenic therapy, a method consisting of exercises focused on the limbs, lungs, heart, diaphragm and head. The physiological response is muscle relaxation, increased peripheral blood flow, lower heart rate and blood pressure, slower and deeper breathing, and reduced oxygen consumption. Autogenic training is applicable in most pathological conditions associated with stress, and can be used preventively or as a complement to conventional treatment.

A retrospective, follow-up study of biofeedback-assisted relaxation therapy in patients with posttraumatic headache.

Although biofeedback in the treatment of migraine and tension-type headache has been widely researched, there is little research examining biofeedback therapy in posttraumatic headache (PTH). In this retrospective study, 40 subjects with PTH who had received biofeedback-assisted relaxation at our headache clinic were questioned at least 3 months following the completion of therapy. Subjects were queried about improvements in headache, increases in ability to relax and cope with pain, and overall benefits, lasting effectiveness, and continued use of biofeedback in daily life. Results indicate 5

Synergistic relaxation of ureteral smooth muscle by doxazosin and vardenafil: experimental implications for medical expulsive therapy.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the relaxant effects of doxazosin (an α₁-adrenergic receptor blocker) and vardenafil (a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor) on rabbit ureteral smooth muscle using an in vitro organ-bath model, and to determine whether sequential administration enhances relaxation, particularly in different ureteral segments. METHODS: Ureteral segments (middle and distal) were obtained from 15 adult male New Zealand White rabbits and mounted in organ baths containing oxygenated Krebs-Henseleit solution at 37 °C. Each ureteral segment (middle and distal) obtained from th

Mindfulness and progressive muscle relaxation as standardized session-introduction in individual therapy: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: There is scarce research on the effects of mindfulness in individual therapy. As many practitioners integrate mindfulness exercises into individual therapy, empirical evidence is of high clinical relevance. METHOD: We investigated the effects of a session-introducing intervention with mindfulness elements (SIIME) in a randomized, controlled design. The effects of SIIME on therapeutic alliance and symptomatic outcome were compared with progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and treatment-as-usual (TAU) control conditions. The sample comprised 162 patients with anxiety and depression.

Case series utilizing exposure, relaxation, and rescripting therapy: impact on nightmares, sleep quality, and psychological distress.

Experiencing a traumatic event may initiate or exacerbate the occurrence of nightmares. Nightmares may impact sleep quality and quantity, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and depression. Recently, imagery rehearsal has gained attention in the treatment of trauma-related nightmares and is reported to be promising in the reduction of nightmares. On the basis of the vast literature describing the therapeutic benefits of exposure techniques for anxiety-related problems, the treatment was modified to enhance the exposure component. This article presents a case series using this modified version of im

Muscular contracture as a component of low back pain: evaluation criteria and significance of relaxant therapy.

The measurement of diastasis of the spinous processes and of muscular action potentials by means of bio-feedback equipment is a clinically valid means to evaluate the extent of reflex muscular contracture. The methods were used to study the relaxant effect of pridinol mesylate on the lumbar extensor muscles in subjects with acute low back pain. It was found that pridinol mesylate significantly reduced the contracture of the extensor lumbar muscles in low back pain when given per os or parenterally.

Dismantling internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for tinnitus. The contribution of applied relaxation: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) for tinnitus is an evidence-based intervention. The components of ICBT for tinnitus have, however, not been dismantled and thus the effectiveness of the different therapeutic components is unknown. It is, furthermore, not known if heterogeneous tinnitus subgroups respond differently to ICBT. AIMS: This dismantling study aimed to explore the contribution of applied relaxation within ICBT for reducing tinnitus distress and comorbidities associated with tinnitus. A secondary aim was to assess whether outcomes varied for three tinnitu
