In 14 dogs during experimentally induced haemorrhagic shock the effects of 6% solutions of hydroxyethyl starch and Dextran-60 were compared. As main parameters of the renal function the arterial and venous pressures, renal blood flow, creatinine-clearance as measure of the glomerular filtration rate, urinary flow rate and urinary excretion of sodium and potassium were estimated. After complete substitution of the lost blood volume both plasma substitutes increased the renal blood flow by 50%. Glomerular filtration rate returned to control values, urinary volume and potassium output increased w

The effects of captopril on effective renal plasma flow and glomerular filtration rate were studied using a noninvasive radioisotopic method on individual kidneys in eight patients with renovascular hypertension and 12 patients with essential hypertension with various renin levels. Four patients with renovascular hypertension had unilateral while three had bilateral renal artery stenosis. The effective renal plasma flow and glomerular filtration rate were determined by using 131I-iodohippurate sodium and 99mTc-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid, respectively. Glomerular filtration rate and ef

BACKGROUND: Chronic overactivity of the renal nerves is a key pathophysiological attribute of drug-resistant hypertension. Indeed, catheter-based renal denervation can lower blood pressure by severing the brain-kidney (efferent nerves) and kidney-brain (afferent nerves) link, but its irreversibility and potential nerve reconnection limits adaptability and longevity, highlighting the need for alternative treatments. Kilohertz-frequency electrical stimulation is an approach known to reversibly inhibit peripheral nerve activity and has potential to reversibly modulate renal blood flow.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: It has been proposed that activation of the sympathetic nervous system causes a rightward shift in the renal autoregulatory curve such that renal blood flow is critically dependent on renal perfusion pressure and that this contributes to the development of the hepatorenal syndrome. The aims of the study were to determine the relationship of renal blood flow and renal perfusion pressure in patients with liver cirrhosis and the effect on renal hemodynamics following insertion of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS).
METHODS: Fifty-six patients were recruited

Any beneficial effects of prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors on systemic hemodynamic derangements during sepsis may be offset by the effect of these inhibitors to reduce renal blood flow. To determine the specific role of prostaglandins in maintaining renal perfusion during hyperdynamic live Escherichia coli bacteremia in rats, we used in vivo video-microscopy and optical doppler velocimetry to quantitate changes in renal microvascular blood flow, and to determine if endogenous prostaglandins participate in these responses. E. coli infusions constricted preglomerular arterioles and decreased r

18 renovascular hypertensive patients were entered into a randomised, double-blind protocol to assess the safety and efficacy of enalapril (5 to 20 mg twice-daily) and hydrochlorothiazide (50 to 100 mg/day), versus triple-drug therapy employing hydrochlorothiazide (50 to 100 mg/day), timolol (10 to 30 mg twice-daily) and hydralazine (50 to 150 mg twice-daily). Specifically monitored were the effects of each drug regimen on blood pressure, plasma renin activity and angiotensin II, glomerular filtration rate by insulin clearance, and effective renal plasma flow by para-aminohippurate clearance.

Renal autoregulation maintains stable renal blood flow in the face of constantly fluctuating blood pressure. Autoregulation is also the only mechanism that protects the delicate glomerular capillaries when blood pressure increases. In order to understand autoregulation, the renal blood flow response to changing blood pressure is studied. The steadystate response of blood flow is informative, but limits investigation of the individual mechanisms of autoregulation. The dynamics of autoregulation can be probed with transfer function analysis. The frequency-domain analysis of autoregulation allows

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system as a homoeostatic mechanism by examining whether mild activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system could enhance cyclosporin-induced renal vasoconstriction and hypertension.
METHODS: We artificially activated the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system by two means: by pretreatment with frusemide (40 mg/day orally for 2 days) and by administering exogenous angiotensin II (1 ng/kg per min intravenously). In both cases the levels of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activation achieved did not by themselves

The role of Ca channel and extracellular Ca2+ on autoregulation of renal blood flow was investigated in the perfused kidney of the anesthetized dog. The perfusion pressure was changed in the range between 60 and 200 mm Hg. Intra-arterial infusion of nifedipine (5 micrograms/min) increased renal blood flow at a perfusion pressure above 100 mm Hg and inhibited autoregulation. Simultaneous infusion of 5 micrograms/min of BAY K 8644 antagonized the effect of nifedipine. Renal blood flow was increased and autoregulatory relationship between flow and perfusion pressure was inhibited by EDTA (30 mg/m

Renovascular hypertension and renal hypertension are two major secondary forms of hypertension due to renal disease. Diagnosis of renovascular hypertension is important because revascularization therapy is an effective treatment for patients with renal artery stenosis. Doppler echocardiogaphy is a useful noninvasive test to detect renal artery stenosis. There are two Doppler echocardiographic methods to detect renal artery stenosis. The first is to measure flow velocity at the stenotic area. Pulse-Doppler and/or continuous Doppler methods are used to measure flow velocity. Significant stenosis

UNLABELLED: There is no clear consensus on the indication for percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA) in cases of acute kidney injury caused by renal artery stenosis or occlusion in patients with a solitary kidney. A 79-year-old man with a solitary kidney presented with right back pain and anuria and was admitted to our hospital with a diagnosis of acute kidney injury. Because of progressive renal impairment and worsening fluid overload, hemodialysis was initiated the day after admission. Magnetic resonance angiography and ultrasonography indicated severe stenosis at the right renal

Nine mature, approximately 45-week-old pigs, were fed a standard diet (SD) containing 16% protein; 10 pigs were fed an isocaloric low protein (LP) pig feed containing 4% protein 2 weeks prior to and 16 weeks after renal or sham-irradiation. The pigs then received the SD for a further 4 weeks. Both kidneys of seven pigs fed the LP diet, and six pigs fed the SD, were irradiated with a single dose of 9.8 Gy of 60Co gamma-rays. The remaining pigs received sham-irradiation. The individual kidney glomerular filtration rate (GFR), effective renal plasma flow (ERPF), and the haematocrit were serially

The effects of intravenous norepinephrine (NE, group 1) and vasopressin (AVP, group 2) infusions on systemic, splanchnic, and renal circulations were studied in anesthetized dogs under basal conditions and during endotoxic shock. Under basal conditions, AVP infusion induced a 12 +/- 7% drop in left ventricular stroke work, a 45 +/- 5% fall in portal venous blood flow, and a 31 +/- 13% decrease in intestinal mucosal blood flow (P < 0.05). AVP also decreased splanchnic oxygen delivery (Do2) and increased splanchnic and renal oxygen extraction significantly during basal conditions. Except for mor

Rat synthetic amidated islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) was infused into conscious Long-Evans rats chronically instrumented for the measurement of regional hemodynamics. Rat IAPP (0.25-2.5 nmol.kg-1.min-1) had dose-dependent tachycardiac and hypotensive effects. Renal blood flow increased at all dose levels in association with incremental rises in renal vascular conductances. Hindquarters blood flow and vascular conductance increased at the higher dose levels, but mesenteric blood flow fell with mean arterial blood pressure (i.e., there was no change in mesenteric vascular conductance). Concur

The renal response to sepsis results in increased renal blood flow, decreased renal vascular resistance, polyuric renal failure and a change in intracortical renal blood distribution. Prior reports used whole animal preparations, where the effects of sepsis on other organs may have led to systemic vasoactive changes altering the experimental model. To elucidate the direct effect of gram negative bacteremia on the kidney, intracortical hemodynamics and urinary flow were investigated using isolated canine kidneys perfused with a nonpulsatile pump oxygenator primed with modified dog plasma. This study describes the effects of high doses of insulin on systemic haemodynamics and regional blood flows during acute ischaemic heart failure in dogs. Left ventricular (LV) dysfunction was induced by embolization of the left main coronary artery, and was evidenced by a significant increase in LV end-diastolic pressure and decrease in LVdP/dtmax and cardiac output. Measurements of femoral, renal, mesenteric and carotid blood flows showed a redistribution of cardiac output during failure. Femoral blood flow decreased to a greater extent than cardiac output, but carotid blood flow decreased i

UNLABELLED: The impaired renal blood flow is one of the main pathogenesis mechanisms of urolithiasis (UL) development. Therefore, the rehabilitation programs involving non-drug methods for abnormal renal blood flow, including those after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ECSWL), still play a significant role. It is due to ECSWL, despite being noninvasive, is often associated with renal trauma, leading to various disorders, including impaired blood flow and renal function. To prevent complications after extracorporeal lithotripsy, relieve pain, improve renal blood flow, relieve spasm and f

Adult ewes were studied to determine the effects of barbiturate anesthesia on renal function and the natriuretic response to renal vasodilation by papaverine and acetylcholine. During a period of consciousness, renal blood flow, glomerular filtration rate, urinary Na excretion (UNaV) and arterial blood pressure were monitored. Renal blood flow was maximally increased by renal arterial infusion of papaverine or acetylcholine and changes in renal function were observed. The sheep were subsequently anesthetized and the experimental protocol was repeated. Barbiturate anesthesia resulted in statist
