Human oocyte quality and reproductive health.

Declining female fertility is a health issue that has received broad global attention. Oocyte quality is the key limiting factor of female fertility, and key processes affecting oocyte quality involve the secretion of and response to hormones, ovarian function, oogenesis, oocyte maturation, and meiosis. However, compared with other species, the research and understanding of human oocyte quality and human reproductive health is limited. This review highlights our current understanding of the physiological factors and pathological factors related to human oocyte quality and discusses potential t

Vaginal microbiome: considerations for reproductive health.

The microbial communities are an indispensable part of the human defense system and coexist with humans as symbionts, contributing to the metabolic functions and immune defense against pathogens. An ecologically stable vaginal microbiota is dominated by Lactobacillus species, which plays an important role in the prevention of genital infections by controlling the vaginal pH, reducing glycogen to lactic acid, and stimulating bacteriocins and hydrogen peroxide. In contrast, an abnormal vaginal microbial composition is associated with an increased risk of bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, sexu

Inflammatory bowel diseases and reproductive health.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) constitute a group of chronic intestinal diseases, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, which typically involve patients of reproductive age and may influence several features of human reproduction. There are many concerns regarding the interactions between the course of IBD, applied treatment (pharmacological or surgical), and fertility, reproductive outcomes, and also neonatal outcomes. To review the literature describing fertility in IBD patients (separately for female and male), and possible infertility treatment in this group of patients, a P

[Epilepsy and reproductive health: Senegalese cohort].

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy is a public health problem in Senegal and Africa because of its severity and its social importance. It occurs at any age sparing no sex. It can influence sexual life and reciprocally. Our aims were to study the effects of antiepileptic drugs on the sexual lives of women with epilepsy, the influence of these drugs on pregnancy and breastfeeding. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study from 1st March to 31st August 2011 in the neurological department of the Fann-Dakar teaching hospital Senegal. Only women with epilepsy were included. RESULTS: We collected 120 patients

Thyroid function and human reproductive health.

Via its interaction in several pathways, normal thyroid function is important to maintain normal reproduction. In both genders, changes in SHBG and sex steroids are a consistent feature associated with hyper- and hypothyroidism and were already reported many years ago. Male reproduction is adversely affected by both thyrotoxicosis and hypothyroidism. Erectile abnormalities have been reported. Thyrotoxicosis induces abnormalities in sperm motility, whereas hypothyroidism is associated with abnormalities in sperm morphology; the latter normalize when euthyroidism is reached. In females, thyrotox

Workplace hazards to women's reproductive health.

Women make up nearly half of Minnesota's workforce. Thus, many women, including those of reproductive age, are exposed to workplace hazards. These hazards may be chemical-toxicants such as heavy metals, pesticides, and endocrine disruptors; physical--the result of activities or proximity to something in the environment; or biological-infectious agents. And they are of growing concern among scientists and the public. Although data on the effect of these hazards on the reproductive health of women is limited, there is evidence indicating they ought to be of concern to women and the physicians wh

Endocrine disrupters and female reproductive health.

There is growing evidence of the impact of estrogenic contaminants in the environment. Studies have shown that male fish in detergent-contaminated water express female characteristics, turtles are sex-reversed by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), male frogs exposed to a common herbicide form multiple ovaries, pseudohermaphroditic offspring are produced by polar bears, and seals in contaminated water have an excess of uterine fibroids. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (those found in the external environment that can mimic or inhibit endogenous hormones) mostly exhibit estrogenic effects, but a f

Male reproductive health: cause for concern?

A substantial body of evidence has accumulated in recent years that human semen quality may be deteriorating. This has been associated with evidence of other changes in male reproductive health, including increases in congenital malformations and testicular cancer in humans, and similar problems in wildlife. Unfortunately, the evidence remains inconclusive. It has been suggested that these changes may be due to environmental xeno-oestrogens acting during development. Although there is now a large quantity of data indicating that this is a plausible hypothesis, evidence of causality, rather tha

Reproductive health and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Women with hyperandrogenic disorders represent a unique group among those with infertility due to anovulation. Although antiestrogens are effective in restoring ovulation in most women, it remains unclear whether these treatments restore fecundability per ovulatory cycle and the ability to maintain pregnancy in these individuals. Moreover, antiestrogens are ineffective in restoring ovulation in some hyperandrogenic anovulatory women, whose condition poses unique and vexing challenges for the infertility therapist. Gonadotropin treatment in antiestrogen-resistant women often leads to ovarian hy

Integrating Quality Management and Male Reproductive Health in Assisted Reproduction.

Quality management is essential to ensure consistent, safe, and effective outcomes in assisted reproductive technology (ART) centers. However, traditional quality assessments often overlook male infertility, which contributes to nearly half of all infertility cases. This article explores the implementation of a quality management system (QMS), specifically ISO 9001, tailored to ART centers that prioritize male reproductive health. Drawing from our experience at ANDROFERT, a male-focused fertility clinic, we demonstrate how process standardization, structured workflows, and continuous improveme

Roles of the Microbiota of the Female Reproductive Tract in Gynecological and Reproductive Health.

The microbiome of the female reproductive tract defies the convention that high biodiversity is a hallmark of an optimal ecosystem. Although not universally true, a homogeneous vaginal microbiome composed of species of Lactobacillus is generally associated with health, whereas vaginal microbiomes consisting of other taxa are generally associated with dysbiosis and a higher risk of disease. The past decade has seen a rapid advancement in our understanding of these unique biosystems. Of particular interest, substantial effort has been devoted to deciphering how members of the microbiome of the f

Rethinking the application of nanoparticles in women's reproductive health and assisted reproduction.

Nanoparticles and nanotechnology may present opportunities to revolutionize the prevention, treatment and diagnosis of a range of reproductive health conditions in women. These technologies are also used to improve outcomes of assisted reproductive technology. We highlight a range of these potential clinical uses of nanoparticles for polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, uterine fibroids and sexually transmitted infections, considering in vitro and in vivo studies along with clinical trials. In addition, we discuss applications of nanoparticles in assisted reproductive technology, includin

The impact of obesity on reproductive health and metabolism in reproductive-age females.

Obesity is a highly prevalent chronic disease that impacts >40% of reproductive-aged females. The pathophysiology of obesity is complex and can be understood simply as a chronic energy imbalance whereby caloric intake exceeds caloric expenditure with an energy surplus stored in adipose tissue. Obesity may be categorized into degrees of severity as well as different phenotypes on the basis of metabolic health and underlying pathophysiology. Obesity and excess adiposity have a significant impact on fertility and reproductive health, with direct effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis,

Microorganisms in the reproductive system and probiotic's regulatory effects on reproductive health.

The presence of microbial communities in the reproductive tract has been revealed, and this resident microbiota is involved in the maintenance of health. Intentional modulation via probiotics has been proposed as a possible strategy to enhance reproductive health and reduce the risk of diseases. The male seminal microbiota has been suggested as an important factor that influences a couple's health, pregnancy outcomes, and offspring health. Probiotics have been reported to play a role in male fertility and to affect the health of mothers and offspring. While the female reproductive microbiota i
