INTRODUCTION: Use rates of cannabis, a substance associated with a host of comorbid physical and mental health concerns, continue to rise for military veterans. Despite this prevalence, descriptive patterns of use among veterans and research on treatment factors that predict cannabis outcomes are lacking. This study aimed to conduct a descriptive profile of veterans who endorse cannabis use, compare veterans endorsing cannabis use to those who do not endorse use, and investigate what factors (other substance use, psychiatric symptoms, and treatment outcomes) predicted return to cannabis use fo

Street Haven's residential addictions treatment program offers a 90-day residential treatment program to highly vulnerable women who suffer from significant health and social care complexity, including homelessness, experience with gender-based violence, mental illness and chronic diseases. Despite the complexity of the needs of the clients, the program supports recovery, greater housing and enhanced overall well-being for the women it serves. The critical factors contributing to the success of the program include client readiness, pre-treatment programming, group-based programming, evidence-b

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic may present special challenges for residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment facilities, which may lack infrastructure and support to implement infection control protocols while maintaining on-site treatment services. However, little is known about how residential SUD treatment programs are impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: The research team conducted semi-structured interviews with 17 directors of 20 residential SUD treatment programs across California during the state's shelter-in-place order. The researchers then analyzed qualitative i

For those who suffer with chronic and disruptive obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), who have not been sufficiently helped by outpatient treatments or medications, intensive residential treatment (IRT) is often the next best treatment option. To date, research of the predictors of treatment outcome in IRT for OCD are mixed and sometimes contradictory. Additionally, although comorbidity is common for patients in this setting, the inclusion of comorbidity as a potential predictor of outcome has been mostly lacking in research to date. The current study aimed to address these issues by utilizing

We analyzed results from surveys of respondents who had completed ≥ 30 days of treatment at Monte Nido Residential Treatment Program over a 10 year period. Participants with anorexia nervosa (AN; n = 66) and bulimia nervosa (BN; n = 52) completed the Eating Disorders Inventory-2 (EDI-2), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and a structured eating disorder assessment at admission and follow-up. Mean duration between discharge and last follow-up was 4.6 years and 3.8 years for AN and BN respectively. For AN there were significant improvements in BMI, BDI, 10 of 11 EDI-2 subscales, and frequenci

On November 9, 2007, the Oregon Public Health Division (OPHD) was notified of an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis in a long-term residential treatment facility. Two previous outbreaks caused by norovirus had occurred at the facility in March and July 2007. OPHD initiated an in-depth epidemiologic investigation, which included submitting archived and recent specimens from the three outbreaks to CDC for genotyping. This report summarizes findings of the outbreak investigation and laboratory testing. The overall attack rate for the most recent outbreak was approximately 14% among patients and 7%

We investigated the associations of psychiatric symptoms and diagnoses with HIV risk behaviors among 405 clients of two United States residential drug abuse treatment programs at admission and at follow-up. Measures of psychiatric status included the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), selected diagnoses assessed with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS-III-R) and the Addiction Severity Index psychiatric composite score (ASI-P). Measures of risk behaviors included: drug injection risk (including sharing and bleaching of needles and syringes), multiple sexual partners and condom use. In multiva

OBJECTIVE: Trauma-related disorders are experienced by up to 50% of individuals in treatment for an eating disorder, yet research knowledge is limited as to whether trauma-related symptoms improve during eating disorder treatment. This is particularly true for complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) and its specific symptom domains (PTSD symptoms and disturbances in self organisation [DSO]).
METHOD: The current study included 95 individuals with eating disorders who completed measures of trauma-related symptoms and eating disorder psychopathology at admission, week 4 of treatment, disc

BACKGROUND: Residential treatment facilities for eating disorders are becoming increasingly common and purport to provide recovery-orientated care in a less restrictive environment than traditional hospital settings. However, minimal attention has focused on individuals' lived experiences of these residential services.
AIMS: This study explores participants' lived experiences of care at Australia's first residential facility for the treatment of eating disorders.
METHOD: Qualitative data were collected as part of a clinical evaluation (June 2021 to August 2023). Fifteen women participated in

BACKGROUND: Many adolescents who have a combination of psychiatric disorders and behavioural problems fail to complete their course of treatment and therefore do not get the treatment they need.
AIM: To investigate whether gender and the severity of symptoms at the start of treatment can predict whether patients will complete their course of treatment.
METHOD: By means of questionnaires ( SCL-90, YSR and CBCL) we attempted to find out if the gender and symptoms of 127 male adolescent patients beginning their treatment in a psychiatric institution could ‘predict’ whether the patients would co

Drug overdose deaths among adolescents are increasing in the United States. Residential treatment facilities are one treatment option for adolescents with substance use disorders, yet little is known about their accessibility or cost. Using the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's treatment locator and search engine advertising data, we identified 160 residential addiction treatment facilities that treated adolescents with opioid use disorder as of December 2022. We called facilities while role-playing as the aunt or uncle of a sixteen-year-old child with a recent nonfat

Background and aim: Young adults with substance use (SU) problems face a high risk of co-occurring problems, including criminality. The aim of the present study was to assess the psychosocial characteristics, SU problems, and criminal thinking young adults entering SU treatment have, and whether the SU characteristics, sex and age are associated with criminal thinking scores. Methods: The sample was 407 young adults aged 16-29 years who underwent an entry assessment between January 2011 and December 2016 at a residential SU treatment institution in Norway. Although improving residential PTSD care is a priority for the Department of Veterans Affairs, previous evaluations have been limited by a lack of systematic data collection across more than two timepoints. This study used recently available data to assess symptom trajectories in a large, national sample of veterans who engaged in residential PTSD treatment. Group-based trajectory analysis PROC TRAJ was used to identify PTSD residential treatment response in a national cohort of veterans (n = 10,832) and the subset of veterans (n = 6515) receiving evidence-based psychotherapy (EBP). PTSD sympt

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorder (ED) treatment outcomes are highly variable from beginning to end of treatment; however, little is known about differential trajectories during the course of treatment. This study sought to characterize heterogeneous patterns of ED treatment response during residential care.
METHOD: Participants were adolescent girls and adult women (N = 360) receiving residential ED treatment for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, other specified feeding or eating disorder, unspecified feeding or eating disorder, or avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.

Adolescents in secured residential facilities may engage in excess behavior immediately following verbal directives or corrective statements from staff. Excess behavior may include verbal aggression, indices of disrespect (e.g., eye rolling, grunting, and obscene gestures), or even physical aggression. These excess behaviors may evoke further directives or corrective statements from staff that, in turn, escalate the adolescent's excess behavior and can produce undesirable effects for both the adolescent (e.g., loss of privileges) and staff members (e.g., increased burn out). Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an empirically supported treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adults, however fewer studies have examined outcomes in adolescents. This study tested the effectiveness of an intensive 1-month, residential DBT treatment for adolescent girls meeting criteria for BPD. Additionally, given well-established associations between BPD symptoms and childhood abuse, the impact of abuse on treatment outcomes was assessed. Participants were female youth (n = 53) aged 13-20 years (M = 17.00, SD = 1.89) completing a 1-month residential DBT program. At pr

Comorbid physical and mental health problems are associated with poorer substance abuse treatment outcomes; however, little is known about these conditions among stimulant abusers at treatment entry. This study compared racial and ethnic groups on baseline measures of drug use patterns, comorbid physical and mental health disorders, quality of life, and daily functioning among cocaine and stimulant abusing/dependent patients. Baseline data from a multi-site randomized clinical trial of vigorous exercise as a treatment strategy for a diverse population of stimulant abusers (N=290) were analyzed
