Residual limb fluid volume change and volume accommodation: Relationships to activity and self-report outcomes in people with trans-tibial amputation.

BACKGROUND: Fluctuations in limb volume degrade prosthesis fit and require users to accommodate changes using management strategies, such as donning and doffing prosthetic socks. OBJECTIVES: To examine how activities and self-report outcomes relate to daily changes in residual limb fluid volume and volume accommodation. STUDY DESIGN: Standardized, two-part laboratory protocol with an interim observational period. METHODS: Participants were classified as "accommodators" or "non-accommodators," based on self-report prosthetic sock use. Participants' residual limb fluid volume change was measu

Skin residual bilirubin volume: a physiologically informed framework for transcutaneous bilirubin interpretation in neonates.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous bilirubinometry (TcB) is increasingly relied upon for neonatal jaundice management in settings without access to laboratory-based total serum bilirubin (TSB) testing. However, inconsistent agreement between transcutaneous bilirubin levels (TBL) and TSB limits its reliability as a standalone clinical tool. OBJECTIVE: To propose and evaluate skin residual bilirubin volume (SRBV) as a physiological explanation for TcB-TSB discordance and to assess its impact on TcB interpretation during diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. METHODS: This observational, multicentre study

Gastric Residual Volume Assessment in Critically Ill Children: The GASTRIC-PICU Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Routine assessment of gastric residual volume (GRV) to guide enteral feeding in critically ill children is widespread but not based on evidence. Perceived high gastric volumes often lead to withholding feeds, impairing nutritional delivery. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of not routinely assessing GRV compared with assessments at least every 6 hours in children undergoing mechanical ventilation on the duration of mechanical ventilation and survival and achievement of nutritional targets. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A pragmatic, multicenter, randomized, noninferiority tr

Residual tumor volume versus extent of resection: predictors of survival after surgery for glioblastoma.

OBJECT: The impact of extent of resection (EOR) on survival for patients with glioblastoma (GBM) continues to be a point of debate despite multiple studies demonstrating that increasing EOR likely extends survival for these patients. In addition, contrast-enhancing residual tumor volume (CE-RTV) alone has rarely been analyzed quantitatively to determine if it is a predictor of outcome. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of CE-RTV and T2/FLAIR residual volume (T2/F-RV) on overall survival. METHODS: A retrospective review of 128 patients who underwent primary resection of supr

Residual urinary volume and urinary tract infection, a life threatening illness: a case report.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease that demyelinates the central nervous system causing progressive disability. The urodynamics of MS patients is an important consideration because these patients are susceptible to acute urinary bladder retention associated with a high fever. Treatment should include irrigation using a Foley catheter and an irrigation syringe to remove residual urine and sediment from the neurogenic bladder, intravenous fluid resuscitation, bacteriological analysis of the residual urine, and admission to an Intensive Care Unit for further evaluation by a urolog

Residual daily urine volume association with inflammation and nutrition status in maintenance hemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: This study determines the clinical significance of residual renal function (RRF), defined as residual daily urine volume (RDUV), in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. METHODS: This multi-center study enrolled 704 MHD patients. Geographic, hematological, biochemical, and dialysis-related data were obtained. Values for nutritional and inflammatory markers were analyzed together with RDUV. RESULTS: In total, 670 of 704 patients (95.2%) with HD duration greater than 1 year had abnormal RDUV (<500 ml). Patients with higher RRF were younger, had shorter HD duration, higher preval

Residual renal function and volume status in peritoneal dialysis patients: a conflict of interest?

Fluid status and volume homeostasis are extremely important in patients with CKD stage 5, as cardiovascular disease, including congestive heart failure and hypertension, is one of the leading causes of death in this patient group. Many epidemiologic studies have meanwhile indicated that indeed preservation of volume control is a key component of adequate peritoneal dialysis. On the other hand, residual renal function is also an important and powerful predictor of outcome in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. This has led some authors to advocate a state of "slight fluid overload" to preserve r

A new method for bedside determination of effective lung volume and functional residual capacity.

Established methods of measuring functional residual capacity (FRC) involve sophisticated equipment and elaborate procedures. Here we present a new method based on CO2 rebreathing that has a simple fast procedure and only requires end-tidal CO2 monitoring. Ten healthy subjects with diverse anthropometric and respiratory parameters were studied in the sitting position. Reference FRC (RefFRC) and tidal volume (TV) were measured with a Cosmed Quark PFT/DLCO unit using the single-breath methane dilution technique in combination with spirometry. Rebreathing through an external dead space of precise

Residual Volume Responsiveness Testing May Improve the Detection of Reversible Airway Obstruction in Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Residual volume responsiveness to bronchodilator administration has been observed in subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, the prevalence of residual volume (RV) responsiveness has not been formally studied in asthma. OBJECTIVE: To identify the prevalence and magnitude of RV responsiveness in asthma. METHODS: Physician-diagnosed adult subjects with asthma on treatment for >12 months were prospectively recruited to perform spirometry and measurement of lung volumes using body plethysmography before and after administration of 360 μg of albuterol. RESULTS:

Temporal changes in pulmonary gas exchange efficiency when breath-hold diving below residual volume.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? How does deep breath-hold diving impact cardiopulmonary function, both acutely and over the subsequent 2.5 hours post-dive? What is the main finding and its importance? Breath-hold diving, to depths below residual volume, is associated with acute impairments in pulmonary gas exchange, which typically resolve within 2.5 hours. These data provide new insight into the behaviour of the lungs and pulmonary vasculature following deep diving. ABSTRACT: Breath-hold diving involves highly integrative and extreme physiological responses to both

Bladder Scans and Postvoid Residual Volume Measurement Improve Diagnostic Accuracy of Cauda Equina Syndrome.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, observational cohort study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the role of pre and postvoid bladder scan in predicting cauda equina syndrome (CES). The thesis was that bladder scanning [specifically postvoid residual (PVR) volume] would have higher diagnostic accuracy than physical examination alone. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: CES is an ill-defined condition with a spectrum of presenting symptoms. There is neither a combination of clinical symptoms and/or signs that reliably predicts cauda equina compression nor single defining clinical criterion

A Large Intraperitoneal Residual Volume Hampers Adequate Volumetric Assessment of Osmotic Conductance to Glucose.

BACKGROUND: In end-stage renal disease patients treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD), the osmotic conductance to glucose (OCG) represents the intrinsic ability of the membrane to transport water in response to a crystalloid osmotic gradient. A progressive loss of OCG in long-term PD patients indicates the development of fibrosis in the peritoneal interstitium, and helps identify patients at risk for encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. The double mini-peritoneal equilibration test (PET) has been proposed as a simple method to assess OCG using the difference in initial ultrafiltration rates gen

Gastric Residual Volume in Feeding Advancement in Preterm Infants (GRIP Study): A Randomized Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of not relying on prefeeding gastric residual volumes to guide feeding advancement on the time to reach full feeding volumes in preterm infants, compared with routine measurement of gastric residual volumes. We hypothesized that not measuring prefeeding gastric residual volumes can shorten the time to reach full feeds. STUDY DESIGN: In this single-center, randomized, controlled trial, we included gavage fed preterm infants with birth weights (BW) 1500-2000 g who were enrolled within 48 hours of birth. Exclusion criteria were major congenital malformations, as

Measurement properties and usability of non-contact scanners for measuring transtibial residual limb volume.

BACKGROUND: Non-contact scanners may have potential for measurement of residual limb volume. Different non-contact scanners have been introduced during the last decades. Reliability and usability (practicality and user friendliness) should be assessed before introducing these systems in clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze the measurement properties and usability of four non-contact scanners (TT Design, Omega Scanner, BioSculptor Bioscanner, and Rodin4D Scanner). STUDY DESIGN: Quasi experimental. METHODS: Nine (geometric and residual limb) models were measured

Elimination of residual lipid contamination in single volume proton MR spectra of human brain.

Short echo time 1H NMR spectra of the human brain reveal signals from various metabolites. In addition, resonances from macromolecules are present that may provide further useful information in several brain diseases. The detection of all these signals is possible if excellent volume selection is obtained; even small lipid contamination from surrounding fat tissue leads to strong spectral contamination. It affects the macromolecule resonances in the 0.5 to 2.0 ppm region and some adjacent metabolite signals and jeopardizes their quantitative analysis. This paper demonstrates how spatial contam

[Clinical significance of residual urine volume in bladder outlet obstruction with benign prostatic hyperplasia].

Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) was determined by pressure-flow studies. Residual urine volume was measured by urethral catheterization. Fifty-one patients with or without BOO were investigated for residual urine. The mean residual urine volume was 32.8 +/- 35.9 ml and 25.2 +/- 22.7 ml in BOO group (31 patients) and no BOO group (20) respectively. The range of residual urine volume was from 6 to 210 ml and from 3 to 88 ml in the two groups respectively. Residual urine volume was not statistically different between the BOO group and no BOO group (P > 0.0

Point-of-Care Ultrasound in the Assessment of Gastric Residual Volume: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents is a serious clinical complication, particularly in patients receiving enteral nutrition or undergoing anesthesia. Gastric residual volume (GRV) is a commonly used surrogate marker that can identify delayed gastric emptying and enteral nutrition intolerance, both of which may increase the risk of aspiration. Traditional methods for measuring GRV are invasive and lack standardization. Point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) has emerged as a promising, noninvasive bedside alternative. Despite its growing clinical use, there is still no consolidated g

Management of residual volumes in intermittent medication infusions in hospitals: a scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Administration of intermittent medication through intravenous infusions is common practice. However, recent literature questions whether current practices deliver full doses of prescribed medications. OBJECTIVE: This protocol outlines the methodology intended to profile literature describing management of residual volume in medication administration lines. METHODS: The proposed review will use Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology to scope the literature, following a six-step framework.
