Resistance exercise training status augments microvascular responses to acute resistance exercise in middle-aged women.

Women experience increased hypertension risk in midlife, which may impact cerebrovascular hemodynamics. Resistance exercise training has emerged as a key means to target hypertension risk. Older women experience beneficial vascular effects of resistance exercise training from repeated exposures to acute resistance exercise (RE). To investigate acute RE and vascular health in women, we evaluated the impact of acute RE on macrovascular, microvascular, and cerebrovascular function in untrained and resistance-trained middle-aged women. The following measurements were performed before and after acu

High-Protein Diets during either Resistance or Concurrent Training Have No Detrimental Effect on Bone Parameters in Resistance-Trained Males.

BACKGROUND: The effects of combining resistance training (RT) and concurrent training (CT; resistance + endurance training) with varied protein doses on bone measures remain poorly understood. Hence, we conducted a comparison of the impacts of two high-protein diets (1.6 or 3.2 g kg-1 d-1) over 16 weeks in resistance-trained males, either with CT or RT alone. METHODS: A total of forty-eight males, all of whom were resistance-trained, had the following demographics: 26.6 ± 6 years, body mass index: 25.6 ± 2.9 kg m-2 administered either 3.2 g kg-1 d-1 protein (CT2; n = 12; RT2; n = 12) or 1.6 g

Strength unseen: confronting prejudice in women's resistance and weight training.

INTRODUCTION: Women face unique challenges in bone development and loss due to the role of estrogen, which leads to lower peak bone mass and a higher fracture risk, especially after menopause. Resistance and weight training are effective strategies to maintain bone health, yet societal biases often deter women from engaging in these activities. This article aims to challenge these misconceptions and advocate for the integration of strength training into women's fitness routines to promote overall well-being. DISCUSSION: Misconceptions surrounding excessive muscle gain, loss of femininity, and

The Connection Between Resistance Training, Climbing Performance, and Injury Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Climbing is an intricate sport composed of various disciplines, holds, styles, distances between holds, and levels of difficulty. In highly skilled climbers the potential for further strength-specific adaptations to increase performance may be marginal in elite climbers. With an eye on the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, more climbers are trying to maximize performance and improve training strategies. The relationships between muscular strength and climbing performance, as well as the role of strength in injury prevention, remain to be fully elucidated. This narrative review seeks to

Influence of Oral Contraceptive Use on Adaptations to Resistance Training.

Introduction: The majority of young women use oral contraceptives (OCs). Use of OCs has been associated with lower myofibrillar protein and tendon collagen synthesis rates, but it is unknown whether OCs will limit the adaptive response of myotendinous tissue to resistance training. Design and Methods: Fourteen healthy untrained young regular OC users (24 ± 1 years, fat% 32 ± 1, 35 ± 2 ml⋅min-1⋅kg-1) and 14 NOC users (non-OC, controls) (24 ± 1 years, fat% 32 ± 2, 34 ± 2 ml⋅min-1⋅kg-1) performed a 10-week supervised lower extremity progressive resistance training program. Before and after the in

Potential orofacial hazards of resistance training: A controlled comparative study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of resistance training (RT) regarding potential hazard for dental wear, tooth abfractions, temporomandibular joint disc displacement, limitation in mouth opening, and existence of cervical spine disorders. The initial study hypothesis was that extensive resistance trainees (ExRT) would suffer from the above-mentioned symptoms more often than recreational trainees (RcT). METHODS: A controlled comparative study among male gym members via questionnaires and a clinical examination. RESULTS: ExRT had a higher prevalence of teeth indentations on the tongue (26% vs

Resistance strength training exercise in children with spinal muscular atrophy.

INTRODUCTION: Preliminary evidence in adults with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and in SMA animal models suggests exercise has potential benefits in improving or stabilizing muscle strength and motor function. METHODS: We evaluated feasibility, safety, and effects on strength and motor function of a home-based, supervised progressive resistance strength training exercise program in children with SMA types II and III. Up to 14 bilateral proximal muscles were exercised 3 times weekly for 12 weeks. RESULTS: Nine children with SMA, aged 10.4 ± 3.8 years, completed the resistance training exercis

High-volume resistance training session acutely diminishes respiratory muscle strength.

This study investigated the effect of a high-volume compared to a low-volume resistance training session on maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP). Twenty male subjects with resistance training experience (6.2 ± 3.2 y), in a crossover trial, completed two resistance training protocols (high-volume: 5 sets per exercise; low-volume: 2 sets per exercise) and a control session (no exercise) on 3 separate occasions. MIP and MEP decreased by 13.6% (p < 0.01) and 14.7% (p < 0.01) respectively from pre-session MIP and MEP, following the high-volume session. MIP and ME

Instability resistance training in collegiate basketball: a multitheoretical experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Basketball requires players to perform complex technical actions under conditions of dynamic instability. Traditional stability and strength training mainly improves muscle strength; however, it is often insufficient for improving postural control and neuromuscular coordination. Instability resistance training (IRT) enhances sensory integration, core activation, and dynamic stability by introducing unstable supporting surfaces and disturbing environments. OBJECTIVES: Based on sensory-motor control theory, core stability theory, and dynamic system theory, this study investigated th

Early vs. late resistance training in post-operative cardiac rehabilitation.

Resistance training (RT) in post-operative cardiac rehabilitation (CR) complements aerobic exercise, enhancing physical capacity, independence, and quality of life. Traditionally, RT is delayed 6-8 weeks to reduce risks such as sternal instability and impaired healing after median sternotomy. However, emerging evidence suggests early RT (≤4 weeks) may be safe and beneficial for selected patients, improving recovery and functional outcomes. This paper explores the debate between traditional delay and early initiation, weighing potential benefits against risks to safety and healing. With growing

Movement pattern definitions for resistance training behavior measurement in diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes can result in debilitating vascular complications, and resistance training (RT) is an effective therapy for improving cardiovascular outcomes. However, only 10-30% of adults meet the public health guidance for RT. While current RT guidelines focus on targeting major muscle groups, guidance specific to simplified movement categorization may augment understanding of RT programming and improve uptake and outcomes. Current movement pattern definitions and descriptions lack clarity, accuracy, and consistency. This paper proposes movement definitions and descriptions to be used for R

The 'aerobic/resistance/inspiratory muscle training hypothesis in heart failure'.

Evidence from large multicentre exercise intervention trials in heart failure patients, investigating both moderate continuous aerobic training and high intensity interval training, indicates that the 'crème de la crème' exercise programme for this population remains to be found. The 'aerobic/resistance/inspiratory (ARIS) muscle training hypothesis in heart failure' is introduced, suggesting that combined ARIS muscle training may result in maximal exercise pathophysiological and functional benefits in heart failure patients. The hypothesis is based on the decoding of the 'skeletal muscle hypot

Resistance (weight lifting) training in an adolescent with McArdle disease.

Owing to the risk of severe rhabdomyolysis, clinicians advise McArdle disease patients to refrain from strenuous exercise, particularly weight lifting. A 15-year-old male McArdle disease patient performed a 6-week, supervised, light- to moderate-intensity (~65-70% of one-repetition-maximum) resistance (weight lifting) training program (2 sessions/week). Training resulted in ~27% and ~6% increase in one-repetition-maximum bench press and multipower squat performance while inducing no myoglobinuria. The patient changed to a lower disease severity class, that is, he became virtually asymptomatic

Isokinetic resistance training increases tibial bending stiffness in young women.

Bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) are common but imperfect surrogate measures of bone strength. The mechanical response tissue analyzer is a device that measures long bone bending stiffness (EI), which strongly predicts bone breaking strength. We hypothesized that isokinetic resistance training of the knee flexor and extensor muscles would increase tibial EI, BMC, and BMD in young women. Fifty-two women, aged 18-26 years, performed concentric (CON, n = 30) or eccentric (ECC, n = 22) isokinetic resistance training with the nondominant leg three times per week for 20 week

Influence of resistance load on neuromuscular response to vibration training.

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of resistance load on the acute and acute residual effects of vibration training, with vibration applied directly to the bicep tendon in a maximal-effort dynamic resistance exercise (3 sets of maximal-effort bicep curls). Eleven participants were exposed to 4 training conditions in random order: exercise with 1 of 2 different loads (40% 1-repetition maximum [RM] or 70% 1RM load) combined with 1 of 2 vibration conditions (vibration [1.2 mm, 65 Hz] or sham vibration). Five minutes before and after the exercise, a set of maximal-effort bicep
