Filtration performance, fit test and side effects of respiratory personal protective equipment following decontamination: Observations for user safety and comfort.

OBJECTIVE: While facing personal protective equipment (PPE) shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic, several institutions looked to PPE decontamination and reuse options. This study documents the effect of two hydrogen peroxide treatments on filtration efficiency and fit tests as well as the side effects for volunteers after the decontamination of N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs). We also propose an efficient and large-scale treatment protocol that allows for the traceability of this protective equipment in hospitals during PPE shortages. METHODS: The effects of low-temperature hydro

"Simulation of medical goggles to stop airborne transmission of viruses: computational fluid dynamics in ergonomics".

This paper presents a position statement on combining computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and ergonomics to guide the design of personal protective equipment (PPE). We used CFD to simulate 36 exposure scenarios of an infected patient sneezing at different distances and different angles while facing either the front or the side of a healthcare worker with or without goggles. The results show that medical goggles indeed block most droplets from the outer surface, but many droplets still deposit on the bottom edge (especially at the nose), inside the air holes and on the side edge. However, the ed

Issues in the handling of cases of tuberculosis in the mortuary.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) that is most often transmitted by the inhalation of bacteria-containing aerosols. While there has been a decline in numbers of cases in certain countries, large population movements, the increasing emergence of drug-resistant strains and the association with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection make it a disease that is increasingly seen in forensic practice. Mortuary staff are at risk of infection from penetrating sharp injuries, droplet inhalation, ingestion, direct inoculation, through skin breaks

The role of personal protective equipment (PPE) in reducing firefighter exposure to chemical hazards: A systematic review.

This paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of personal protective equipment (PPE) in reducing firefighter exposure to various hazardous chemicals from the smoke emitted during fires. A systematic review of peer-reviewed articles was undertaken utilizing five databases: Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and CINHAL. Studies published between 2013 and 2023 that investigated the effectiveness of PPE in reducing firsthand exposure to at least one chemical were included. Extracted data were grouped into two overarching themes related to PPE: (a) Respiratory Protection and (b) Personal P

[Respiratory tract diseases caused by chemically irritating or toxic pollutants at the work site].

Update statistics of job-related diseases show there is still a high level in reported and also in recognised and financially compensated airway diseases caused by the action of chemically irritating or toxic substances during work. Most reported cases occur in the chemical and metal processing industries. Main triggering substances are said to be isocyanates, aerosols of pollutants produced during welding, cutting, casting or moulding (smoke), by solvents and hair dyes. Experiments prove that a variety of these noxious substances produce dose-dependent hypersensitivity of the bronchial system

Predicting facial deformation during respiratory mask fitting with semi-supervised graph neural networks.

Respiratory masks are necessary to protect against airborne contaminants in both medical and industrial environments. However, prolonged use remains uncomfortable and frequently causes pressure sores. This problem usually related to poor fit not only compromises user comfort but also reduces protection effectiveness and compliance with recommendations. The objective is to predict facial deformation and pressure distribution when wearing a mask, based on a limited set of annotated biomechanical data, in order to provide an optimum fit. We designed a semi-supervised graph neural network that rep

A simple surgical mask modification to pass N95 respirator-equivalent fit testing standards during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has infected hundreds of millions of people resulting in millions of deaths worldwide. While N95 respirators remain the gold standard as personal protective equipment, they are resource-intensive to produce and obtain. Surgical masks, easier to produce and obtain, filter ≥95% submicron particles but are less protective due to a lack of seal around a user's face. This study tested the ability of a simple surgical mask modification using rubber bands to create a seal against particle exposure that would pass N95 standards. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Forty healthcare

Influenza.

Influenza is a disease of global public health significance as evidenced by the 2009 pandemic caused by a novel swine-origin H1N1 virus. Influenza epidemics occur almost every year and are less striking, but nevertheless, account for considerable morbidity and school absences among healthy children and adolescents. Patients with chronic conditions may develop severe illness. This article discusses the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management of influenza. Vaccination is the most effective measure available for the control of influenza. Recommendations for use of the ina

Bioprotective Respirator Assembled by Defective Carbon Nitride for Long-Term Light Triggered Health Protection.

Wearing face masks is the best way to stop the spread of respiratory infections. However, if masks are not sterilized, changing them too frequently can actually increase the risk of cross-contamination. Herein, the construction of an antipathogen photocatalytic mask with carbon vacancy-modified carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C3N4-VC Ns) coated on the non-woven fabrics of the out layer of the mask, offering effective and long-term protection against damaging pathogens when exposed to light is reported. The introduced carbon vacancies are found capable of creating energy-disordered sites and induc

Effect of wearing an N95 respirator on the internal nasal valve and the association with external nasal anatomy - a cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether: the N95 respirator affects nasal valve patency; placement on the bony vault improves patency; and external nasal anatomy affects the outcome. METHODS: A prospective study with 50 participants was conducted. Nasal patency was measured by the minimal cross-sectional area via acoustic rhinometry, and using the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation survey, before and after wearing the N95 respirator and after adjustment. RESULTS: The minimal cross-sectional area was narrowed by 27 per cent when wearing the N95 respirator (p < 0.001), and improved by 9.2 per cent

Evaluation of CBRN Respirator Protection in Simulated Fire Overhaul Settings.

Overhaul is the phase of firefighting after flames have been extinguished but when products of combustion are still being released. While positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) provide the highest level of respiratory protection during overhaul, use of air-purifying respirators (APRs) with suitable filters could potentially provide a lower weight, longer duration option for first responders. The objective of this study was to assess whether an APR with a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) canister could be recommended as substitution for SCBA during ove

Occupational exposure to perchloroethylene in the dry cleaning industry.

Field surveys were conducted of 67 dry cleaning establishments to assess working conditions and potential for exposure to perchloroethylene, a solvent of choice in this industry. Evaluation of ventilation controls showed that 28% of cleaning machines (transfer type) did not have functioning local exhaust systems, and an additional 32% had inadequately maintained systems providing less than the recommended face velocity at the door opening. Personal sampling was performed in 20 firms to relate operator exposure levels to the process used and degree of local exhaust ventilation. Utilization of t

The role of masks and respirators in preventing respiratory infections in healthcare and community settings.

The covid-19 pandemic saw frequent changes and conflicts in mask policies and politicization of masks. On reviewing the evidence, including studies published after the pandemic, the data suggest respirators are more effective than masks in healthcare, but must be continuously worn to be protective. Healthcare and aged care settings amplify outbreaks, so protection of patients and staff is paramount. Most guidelines assume risk is only present during close contact or aerosol generating procedures, but studies show intermittent use of respirators is not protective. New research in aerosol scienc
