A Lung Sound Analysis in Infants with Risk Factors for Asthma During Acute Respiratory Infection.

Background: The parameters of lung sounds have been suggested as biomarkers of airway changes. Using a commercially available lung sound analyzer, we investigated the characteristics of the lung sounds in infants with acute respiratory infection (ARI). Methods: Infants with ARI who were 6 to 18 months of age were included in this study. The lung sound parameters, the ratio of the third area and fourth areas to the total area under the curve of the sound spectrum (A3/AT and B4/AT), and the ratio of power and frequency at 75% and 50% of the highest frequency of the power spectrum (RPF75 and RPF5

Attention Feature Fusion Network via Knowledge Propagation for Automated Respiratory Sound Classification.

Goal: In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the early diagnosis of respiratory diseases has become increasingly crucial. Traditional diagnostic methods such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), while accurate, often face accessibility challenges. Lung auscultation, a simpler alternative, is subjective and highly dependent on the clinician's expertise. The pandemic has further exacerbated these challenges by restricting face-to-face consultations. This study aims to overcome these limitations by developing an automated respiratory sound classification system using deep

Validation of Tracheal Sound-Based Respiratory Effort Monitoring for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Diagnosis.

Background: Respiratory effort is considered important in the context of the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), as well as other sleep disorders. However, current monitoring techniques can be obtrusive and interfere with a patient's natural sleep. This study examines the reliability of an unobtrusive tracheal sound-based approach to monitor respiratory effort in the context of OSA, using manually marked respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP) signals as a gold standard for validation. Methods: In total, 150 patients were trained on the use of type III cardiorespiratory polygraph

Clinical application of a lung sound analysis in infants with respiratory syncytial virus acute bronchiolitis.

BACKGROUND: Objective investigation of the characteristics of acute bronchiolitis in infants is important for its diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: Lung sound data of 50 patients diagnosed with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) acute bronchiolitis (m:f = 29:21, median of age 7 months), 20 patients with RSV acute respiratory tract infections without acute bronchiolitis (m:f = 10:10, 5 months) and 38 age-matched control infants (m:f = 23:15, 8 months) were analyzed using a conventional method and compared. Furthermore, the relationships between lung sound parameters and clinical symptoms (clini

Real-time airway monitoring system using binary classification model based on respiratory sounds of rabbits with a tracheostomy tube.

Tracheostomy is a medical procedure used to ensure airway integrity. As patients with tracheostomies produce excess secretions obstructing the airway, proper airway management is required. Medical staff primarily assess airway status through respiratory sounds, but this assessment heavily depends on their experience and expertise. Therefore, a continuous and standardized airway assessment system is needed, and it would be even more beneficial if it could operate in real time. Due to challenges in obtaining controlled respiratory sound data from humans, respiratory sounds from rabbits with trac

A novel system that continuously visualizes and analyzes respiratory sounds to promptly evaluate upper airway abnormalities: a pilot study.

Although respiratory sounds are useful indicators for evaluating abnormalities of the upper airway and lungs, the accuracy of their evaluation may be limited. The continuous evaluation and visualization of respiratory sounds has so far been impossible. To resolve these problems, we developed a novel continuous visualization system for assessing respiratory sounds. Our novel system was used to evaluate respiratory abnormalities in two patients. The results were not known until later. The first patient was a 23-year-old man with chronic granulomatous disease and persistent anorexia. During his h

Spectrum analysis of respiratory sounds in exercising horses with experimentally induced laryngeal hemiplegia or dorsal displacement of the soft palate.

OBJECTIVE: To record respiratory sounds in exercising horses and determine whether spectrum analysis could be use to identify sounds specific for laryngeal hemiplegia (LH) and dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP). ANIMALS: 5 Standardbred horses. PROCEDURE: Respiratory sounds were recorded and pharyngeal pressure and stride frequency were measured while horses exercised at speeds corresponding to maximum heart rate, before and after induction of LH and DDSP. RESULTS: When airway function was normal, expiratory sounds predominated and lasted throughout exhalation. After induction of

Relative tidal volume and respiratory airflow estimation using tracheal sound and movement during sleep.

Airflow is the reference signal to assess sleep respiratory disorders, such as sleep apnea. Previous studies estimated airflow using tracheal sounds in short segments with specific airflow rates, while requiring calibration or a few breaths for tuning the relationship between sound energy and airflow. Airflow-sound relationship can change by posture, sleep stage and airflow rate or tidal volume. We investigated the possibility of estimating surrogates of tidal volume without calibration in the adult sleep apnea population using tracheal sounds and movements. Two surrogates of tidal volume: tho

Quantification of respiratory sounds by a continuous monitoring system can be used to predict complications after extubation: a pilot study.

To show that quantification of abnormal respiratory sounds by our developed device is useful for predicting respiratory failure and airway problems after extubation. A respiratory sound monitoring system was used to collect respiratory sounds in patients undergoing extubation. The recorded respiratory sounds were subsequently analyzed. We defined the composite poor outcome as requiring any of following medical interventions within 48 h as defined below. This composite outcome includes reintubation, surgical airway management, insertion of airway devices, unscheduled use of noninvasive ventilat

Using Machine Learning and a Combination of Respiratory Flow, Laryngeal Motion, and Swallowing Sounds to Classify Safe and Unsafe Swallowing.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research was to develop a swallowing assessment method to help prevent aspiration pneumonia. The method uses simple sensors to monitor swallowing function during an individual's daily life. METHODS: The key characteristics of our proposed method are as follows. First, we assess swallowing function by using respiratory flow, laryngeal motion, and swallowing sound signals recorded by simple sensors. Second, we classify whether the recorded signals correspond to healthy subjects or patients with dysphagia. Finally, we analyze the recorded signals using both a feature e

Novel deep learning-based optimization framework for the classification of respiratory diseases using lung sound analysis.

Respiratory disease classification using lung sound analysis offers a non-invasive and cost-effective diagnostic alternative to traditional imaging-based methods. This study proposes a deep learning-based optimization framework for automated respiratory disease classification using the publicly available ICBHI 2017 Respiratory Sound Database (Kaggle version), comprising 920 recordings from 126 subjects with annotated respiratory cycles. The collected audio signals are preprocessed using band-pass filtering to suppress noise and irrelevant frequency components. A Denoising Autoencoder (DAE) is

Respiratory sound-based AI screening of asthma and COPD via multi-feature fusion and CatBoost classification.

Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are significant global health burdens with conventional diagnosis relying on resource-intensive spirometry. This paper presents a reproducible multimodal respiratory sound screening model combining complementary acoustic and clinical representations. The proposed method fuses handcrafted spectral-temporal features (MFCCs, chroma, spectral contrast, tonnetz, mel-spectrogram, tempogram) with precomputed cough and vowel embeddings and structured clinical metadata, processed via a class-weighted CatBoost ensemble on the standardized AIRS Kagg

Adaptive federated learning with differential privacy for multi-class respiratory disease recognition from lung sound recordings.

INTRODUCTION: The classification of respiratory sounds remains a challenging task in clinical research, limited by severe dataset imbalance and strict privacy regulations. Traditional machine learning methods are centralized and jeopardize data privacy and have difficulty in identifying minority classes, which makes them unsuitable for real-world clinical use. METHODS: In this paper, a novel federated learning framework for multi-class respiratory disease classification is proposed based on the fusion of a Hybrid Support Vector Machine-K-Nearest Neighbor (SVMKNN) classifier with Adaptive Fede

The Usefulness of Continuous Respiratory Sound Monitoring for the Detection of Pulmonary Atelectasis in a Ventilated Extremely Low Birth Weight Infant.

The assessment of auscultation using a stethoscope is unsuitable for continuous monitoring. Therefore, we developed a novel acoustic monitoring system that continuously, objectively, and visually evaluates respiratory sounds. In this report, we assess the usefulness of our revised system in a ventilated extremely low birth weight infant (ELBWI) for the diagnosis of pulmonary atelectasis and evaluation of treatment by lung lavage. A female infant was born at 24 weeks of age with a birth weight of 636 g after emergency cesarean section. The patient received invasive mechanical ventilation immedi

Reliability-aware transfer learning with BEATs for variable-length respiratory sound classification: a patient-disjoint evaluation in two public databases.

Random or central placement of respiratory sounds within padded windows can cause length-based masks to exclude recorded audio. We developed an exact support-propagation interface for the pretrained bidirectional encoder representation from audio transformers (BEATs), mapping sample support through filterbank frames and patch tokens to attention and pooling masks. We evaluated this interface alongside adaptation strategies, computational costs, probability calibration and class-conditional coverage. The study included 15 987 events from the International Conference on Biomedical and Health Inf
