POL7085 or anti-CCL28 treatment inhibits development of post-paramyxoviral airway disease.

INTRODUCTION: Asthma is major health burden throughout the world, and there are no therapies that have been shown to be able to prevent the development of disease. A severe respiratory paramyxoviral infection early in life has been demonstrated to greatly increase the risk of developing asthma. We have a mouse model of a severe respiratory paramyxoviral infection (Sendai virus, SeV) that mimics human disease, and requires early expression of the cytokine CCL28 to drive the development of post-viral airway disease. The known receptors for CCL28 are CCR3 and CCR10. However, it is not known if bl

Respiratory syncytial virus and supraventricular tachycardia in an infant.

A 7-week infant admitted with bronchiolitis proven to be caused by respiratory syncytial virus developed a supraventricular tachycardia which responded to digitalization. She has remained well and no longer requires medication 6 months later, her electrocardiogram now being normal. The course of the illness suggests an association between infection with respiratory syncytial virus and the development of the tachycardia.

Clinical review of ribavirin.

The recent approval of ribavirin aerosol for the treatment of severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in infants and young children is a significant addition to the antiviral drugs available today. When administered as an aerosolized form by face mask or mist tent for 20 to 21 hours per day, ribavirin effectively decreases the symptoms of RSV infection and the shedding of RSV virus. Studies of other viral infections such as viral hepatitis, influenza A and B, Lassa fever, genital herpes, and herpes zoster have demonstrated promising, but inconclusive results. Further studies are needed to jus

Exogenous porcine viruses.

Porcine organs, cells and tissues provide a viable source of transplants in humans, though there is some concern of public health risk from adaptation of swine infectious agents in humans. Limited information is available on the public health risk of many exogenous swine viruses, and reliable and rapid diagnostic tests are available for only a few of these. The ability of several porcine viruses to cause transplacental fetal infection (parvoviruses, circoviruses, and arteriviruses), emergence or recognition of several new porcine viruses during the last two decades (porcine circovirus, arteriv

Epidemiology of respiratory syncytial virus infection among infants over three winter seasons.

A study involving respiratory syncytial virus was carried out on infants and young children hospitalised with acute respiratory tract infection over the period December 1987 to March 1990. During peak periods of RS virus activity 420 naso-pharyngeal aspirates were submitted to the Virus Reference Laboratory, Department of Medical Microbiology, U.C.D., mostly from the Dublin region. Using immunofluorescence, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and cell culture techniques 206 samples (49%) were identified as positive for RS virus. Over the period of study RS virus seasonal activity was confined to

Community- and hospital-acquired respiratory syncytial virus infections in Chile.

Nasopharyngeal aspirates were obtained on admission from 614 patients younger than 2 years of age who were hospitalized in a ward for acute respiratory infections from June 1988 through October, 1989, in Santiago, Chile. Patients in two rooms were followed during the cold seasons by sampling aspirates every other day during the child's entire hospital stay. Clinical features were recorded daily. Indirect monoclonal immunofluorescent assay and isolation in HEp-2 were used for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) diagnosis. The mean RSV detection rate was 39% at the time of admission, ranging from

Prevention of chronic postbronchiolitis airway sequelae with IFN-gamma treatment in rats.

After viral bronchiolitis at an early age, Brown Norway (BN) rats develop chronic airway dysfunction consisting of inflammation, remodeling, episodic reversible obstruction, and hyperresponsiveness. We hypothesized that supplementation of interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) during viral illness would alter the inflammatory response and attenuate the postviral sequelae. Weanling rats were treated daily with aerosolized interferon gamma (IFN-gamma), from 2 d prior through 7 d after inoculation, and compared with saline-treated infected rats and with noninfected control rats. The IFN-gamma treatment had

Hilar enlargement in respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia.

The clinical and radiographic features of ten children with hilar enlargement in association with proven Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infection are described. Hilar enlargement was seen in 10/35 children with RSV infection, and was invariably unilateral and right sided. It is recommended that RSV pneumonia be considered in children with unilateral hilar enlargement if tuberculosis has been excluded, and the onset of disease is rapid.

Respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia in young calves: clinical and pathologic findings.

Nine young calves given respiratory syncytial virus by a combined intranasal and intratracheal route developed a severe respiratory tract disease in which coughing, tachypnea, and hyperpnea were prominent clinical features. Calves were euthanatized on postinoculation (initial) days (PID) 1 to 13. At necropsy, large areas of consolidation were present in the cranial, middle, accessory, and cranial parts of the caudal lung lobes of calves killed between PID 4 and 13. Histopathologic examination revealed widespread and severe lesions in small bronchi, bronchioli, and alveoli. Multinucleate epithe

HUMAN PARAINFLUENZA 2 RELATED ILLNESS AND A DEATH IN A GROUP OF CAPTIVE WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLAS (GORILLA GORILLA GORILLA).

An onset of respiratory disease in a captive bachelor group (n = 3) of western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) was concomitant with peak attendance of visitors at the institution and with unwanted occurrences of food items being thrown in the gorillas' enclosure. While the condition of two individuals improved with supportive therapy and antibiotics, the third gorilla died three days following initiation of treatment. A fatal bacterial pneumonia, secondary to an infection by a human parainfluenza virus 2 (HIPV-2), was considered to be the cause of death based on histopathology, lung

Kawasaki disease associated with parainfluenza type 3 virus infection.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute, febrile and multisystem vasculitis of early childhood with a striking predilection for the coronary arteries. In developed countries, the incidence of KD has replaced acute rheumatic fever as the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children. The etiologic agent of KD remains unknown, although clinical and epidemiologic features strongly indicate an infectious cause. Parainfluenza viruses are the major cause of laryngotracheobronchitis (croup), but they also commonly cause upper respiratory tract infection, pneumonia, or bronchiolitis. Types 1 and 2 vir

Central nervous system manifestations of parainfluenza virus type 3 infections in childhood.

Three children were admitted within an 8-week period with parainfluenza virus type 3 infection accompanied by encephalitis. All 3 patients had electroencephalograms characterized by slowing, disorganization of background activity, and multifocal sharp-wave activity with temporal predominance. Apnea and periodic breathing were observed in 1 patient, opsoclonus-myoclonus in another, and disease mimicking herpes encephalitis in the third. All 3 patients recovered without neurologic residua.

Emerging viral infections in Australia.

Hendra virus infection should be suspected in someone with close association with horses or bats who presents acutely with pneumonia or encephalitis (potentially after a prolonged incubation period). Australian bat lyssavirus infection should be suspected in a patient with a progressive neurological illness and a history of exposure to a bat. Rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin should be strongly considered after a bite, scratch or mucous membrane exposure to a bat. Japanese encephalitis vaccine should be considered for people intending to reside in or visit endemic areas of southern or eastern

A comparative study on the use of virus and antibody detection techniques for the diagnosis of La Piedad Michoacan paramyxovirus (LPMV) infection in pigs.

La Piedad Michoacan paramyxovirus (LPMV) is newly recognized paramyxovirus that has been associated with neurologic and reproductive disorders in pigs in Mexico. To date, no comparative study of methods for the diagnosis of infection with this virus has been published. In this study, we identified tissues containing maximum virus load to optimize virus isolation procedures, and we compared this method to a rapid diagnostic test employing immunostaining of impression smears for LPMV antigens. In addition, several of the available tests for detecting LPMV antibodies were compared for their sensi

[Once more a discussion of the RSV affair].

During autumn- and winter epidemics respiratory syncytial (RS) virus accounts for the majority of respiratory infections in infants and young children. In case of an acute lower respiratory tract infection, RS virus can induce serious symptoms. These are age-dependent. The most important symptoms in babies and toddlers are dyspnea, wheezing, cyanosis and apneas. In the case of respiratory insufficiency or fatigue, as well as recurrent apneas, mechanical ventilation is required. Diagnosis can be made using a direct immunofluorescence technique with monoclonal antibodies. To control the risk of

Pulmonary infections with respiratory syncytial virus and the parainfluenza viruses.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and the parainfluenza viruses (PIVs) are the most important causes of acute lower respiratory illness (LRI) in infants and children under 6 years of age. These enveloped viruses are members of the paramyxovirus family. They infect cells in the epithelium lining the trachea and intrapulmonary airways, and cause croup, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and bronchopneumonia. RSV causes annual midwinter to early spring outbreaks of respiratory disease in temperate climates; epidemics are heralded by the appearance of increased numbers of cases of bronchiolitis, primarily
