Do we understand voiding dysfunction in women? Current understanding and future perspectives: ICI-RS 2017.

AIMS: Urinary retention in women is poorly understood, compared to the equivalent condition in men, and was the subject of a dedicated session organized at the International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society (ICI-RS) in Bristol, United Kingdom, 2017. METHODS: The current understanding of the pathophysiological correlates of idiopathic voiding dysfunction in women, the role of urodynamics, neurophysiology, and non-invasive tests in characterizing functional bladder outlet obstruction due to a non-relaxing urethral sphincter, and poorly defined diagnosis of detrusor underactivity we

Linking memory and language: Evidence for a serial-order learning impairment in dyslexia.

The present study investigated long-term serial-order learning impairments, operationalized as reduced Hebb repetition learning (HRL), in people with dyslexia. In a first multi-session experiment, we investigated both the persistence of a serial-order learning impairment as well as the long-term retention of serial-order representations, both in a group of Dutch-speaking adults with developmental dyslexia and in a matched control group. In a second experiment, we relied on the assumption that HRL mimics naturalistic word-form acquisition and we investigated the lexicalization of novel word-for

Tracking a changing environment: optimal sampling, adaptive memory and overnight effects.

Foraging in a variable environment presents a classic problem of decision making with incomplete information. Animals must track the changing environment, remember the best options and make choices accordingly. While several experimental studies have explored the idea that sampling behavior reflects the amount of environmental change, we take the next logical step in asking how change influences memory. We explore the hypothesis that memory length should be tied to the ecological relevance and the value of the information learned, and that environmental change is a key determinant of the value

A demonstration that the hippocampus supports both recollection and familiarity.

Recognition memory is thought to depend on two distinct processes: recollection and familiarity. There is debate as to whether damage to the hippocampus selectively impairs recollection or whether it impairs both recollection and familiarity. If hippocampal damage selectively impairs recollection but leaves familiarity intact, then patients with circumscribed hippocampal lesions should exhibit the full normal range of low-confidence and high-confidence familiarity-based recognition. High-confidence, familiarity-based decisions are ordinarily accompanied by successful recollection (when memory

Profound shock following intervention for chronic untreated stool retention. A case report.

Chronic stool retention with soiling is a common and distressing condition in children. Diagnosis and treatment generally involve both medical and psychological aspects. This case addresses a potentially life-threatening complication of shock occurring during treatment of chronic stool retention with castor oil, and also explores the psychosocial factors felt to be contributory.

Psychological Capital and Job Performance Mediate Psychological Contract and Turnover Intention in Young Nurses.

AIM: To explore the effect of psychological contract on turnover intention among young nurses and to investigate the mediating roles of psychological capital and job performance. BACKGROUND: The high turnover rate of young nurses poses a significant risk to the stability of the nursing workforce and organizational effectiveness. Although psychological contract has been recognized as an important factor influencing employee retention, how it affects turnover intention in young nurses remains underexplored. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among young nurses working in hospitals

The Effect of Blocked, Random and Mixed Practice Schedules on Speech Motor Learning of Tongue Twisters in Unimpaired Speakers.

There are few investigations comparing practice schedules in speech motor learning, despite certain schedules being recommended for the clinical treatment of speech motor disorders. This study compared effects of random, blocked and mixed practice on tongue twister accuracy in unimpaired speakers. We hypothesized that blocked practice would benefit acquisition of learning, but that random practice and mixed blocked-then-random practice would yield superior retention of learning. We found that the random and blocked-random practice schedules yielded superior accuracy at the end of the acquisiti

Speech-mediated retention in dyslexics.

Dyslexics (6 to 9 yr. old) and a control group of 12 normal readers (second-graders) were tested on a memory task with rhyming and non-rhyming items. The most important finding is that both groups were penalized by rhyme, indicating speech coding. It was observed that the dyslexics were not less penalized by rhyme than were controls. The present results are compared with those of other recent studies.

Scopolamine effects on memory retention in mice: a model of dementia?

Scopolamine-treated normal young human subjects exhibit memory dysfunctions analogous to those observed in demented patients. The dysfunctions are reversible by physostigmine but not by d-amphetamine which suggests that the memory impairment is specifically related to reduced cholinergic transmission caused by scopolamine. Scopolamine-induced amnesia has been proposed as a model for dementia where reduced cholinergic function is the suspected cause. We report seven experiments in young adult mice which examine scopolamine's effects on memory retention and whether its amnestic effects are speci

A test of the variability vs. specificity hypotheses in the retention of a motor skill.

The variability of practice hypothesis suggests that practicing with task variations enhances motor learning (Schmidt, 1975). However, in tasks with only a single criterion goal to be learned, the evidence that variable practice enhances retention of this criterion task compared to constant practice (i.e. practicing without task variations) is somewhat mixed. Here, we addressed this question using a registered report format. Participants (n = 80) learned a bimanual shuffleboard task where the goal was to slide a virtual puck toward a target, which required participants to release the puck at a

Script knowledge enhances the development of children's false memories.

We examined whether script knowledge contributes to the development of children's false memories. Sixty 7-year-old and 60 11-year-old children listened to false narratives describing either a high-knowledge event (i.e., fingers being caught in a mousetrap) or a low-knowledge event (i.e., receiving a rectal enema) that were similar in terms of plausibility and pleasantness. Moreover, half of the children in each condition received additional suggestive details about the false events. Across two interviews, children had to report everything they remembered about the events. Script knowledge affe

Differential susceptibility to anterograde and retrograde amnesia treatments in preweanling rats.

Although there have been several reports that preweanling rats and mice are relatively resistant to experimentally induced retrograde amnesia, there is virtually no information concerning susceptibility to anterograde amnesia in subjects of this age. Therefore, in the present experiment, 23-day-old rats received hypothermia either prior to, or immediately after, punishment training in an attempt to induce anterograde and retrograde amnesia, respectively. When tested 24 hr later, only those subjects given hypothermia prior to training exhibited any loss of retention. Thus these results confirme

Adding an online psychologically informed pain management program to routine musculoskeletal care in Australia: A feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Best practice guidelines recommend access to psychological support within routine musculoskeletal care, but this remains limited. This mixed methods study aimed to explore the feasibility and acceptability of adding an online psychologically informed pain management program to usual care provided by musculoskeletal clinicians. METHODS: Australian-based musculoskeletal clinicians recruited patients with persistent musculoskeletal pain. Clinicians screened, recruited and invited patients to complete an online, psychologically informed pain management program provided by an Austral

Attachment, Mate-Retention Strategies, and Intimate Partner Violence Victimisation: A Two-Wave Study in Brazil and the United Kingdom.

The current study examined whether individual differences in attachment orientation, mate-retention tactics (benefit-provisioning and cost-inflicting strategies), and COVID-19-related stressors (impact, uncertainty, and perceived risk) were associated with IPV victimisation across two time points, one month apart, in Brazil and the UK (N = 1416 at Wave 1; N = 353 at Wave 2). Linear mixed-effects models controlled for age, sex, ethnicity, and relationship length. IPV victimisation did not significantly change over time, and COVID-19-related variables were not associated with any form of IPV. Br

Does immediate imitation influence long-term memory for observed actions?

Long-term memory for object-related information acquired observationally was studied among younger and older toddlers under two conditions of acquisition and retention: direct imitation followed by reproduction after a 10 min delay (delayed imitation), and deferred imitation. A principal aim was to determine whether direct imitation fosters a form of enactive representation that improves long-term memory, or whether such memory is influenced more by visual encoding factors. Tasks consisted of five simple action combinations or separations. Results indicated that post-test scores were higher un

Sleep-dependency of episodic-like memory consolidation in rats.

Episodic memory refers to the recollection of a representation that binds together into a unique past experience "what" happened, "where" and "when". Sleep has been identified as a state that optimizes the consolidation of newly acquired memory. To determine if sleep is important for the consolidation of episodic-like memory, we tested rats on an episodic-like memory task requiring the binding of an object memory into a spatio-temporal context, as well as retention of its individual components, using separate tests of novel-object recognition ("what"), object-place recognition ("where") and te

The effect of ostensive communication on immediate and delayed memory of novel and familiar action patterns.

Actions are often learnt incidentally by observing other individuals. How aspects inherent to the social context in which an action is seen affect action learning remains poorly understood. Here we study the effect of a special social signal, the eye gaze of the demonstrator, on the immediate and delayed memory and execution of observed actions. In Experiment 1, healthy young adult volunteers (N = 37) watched short videos of a demonstrator performing novel actions with novel objects only once, and were tested for immediate and delayed recall of those actions through action execution. Overall,
