Carbachol injection into the pontine reticular formation depresses laryngeal muscle activities and airway reflexes in decerebrate cats.

To understand the role of cholinoceptive, medial pontine reticular formation (mPRF) neurons in the control of upper airway, pharyngolaryngeal reflexes, we measured activities of intrinsic laryngeal muscles (posterior cricoarytenoid, PCA; thyroarytenoid, TA), diaphragm (DIA), genioglossus (GG) and a neck muscle (trapezius) in unanesthetized, decerebrated, spontaneously breathing cats with and without mPRF carbachol injections. The ethimoidal nerve was electrically stimulated to evoke sneezing, and the superior laryngeal nerve to evoke the laryngeal reflex, swallowing, and coughing. Carbachol re

Noradrenergic substrates sensing light within brainstem reticular formation as targets for light-induced behavioral and cardiovascular plasticity.

The occurrence of pure light exerts a variety of effects in the human body, which span from behavioral alterations, such as light-driven automatic motor activity, cognition and mood to more archaic vegetative functions, which encompass most organs of the body with remarkable effects on the cardiovascular system. Although empirical evidence clearly indicates occurrence of these widespread effects, the anatomical correlates and long-lasting changes within putatively specific neuronal circuitries remain largely unexplored. A specific role is supposed to take place for catecholamine containing neu

Activity of midbrain reticular formation and neocortex during the progression of human non-rapid eye movement sleep.

To clarify the neural correlates and brain activity during the progression of human non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, we examined the absolute regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during light and deep NREM sleep and during wakefulness in normal humans using positron emission tomography with H(2)(15)O. Relative changes in rCBF during light and deep NREM sleep in comparison to the rCBF during wakefulness were also analyzed. During light NREM sleep, the rCBF in the midbrain, in contrast to that in the pons and thalamic nuclei, did not decrease when compared to that during wakefulness, whereas

Cholinergic mechanisms in canine narcolepsy--II. Acetylcholine release in the pontine reticular formation is enhanced during cataplexy.

Cataplexy in the narcoleptic canine has been shown to increase after local administration of carbachol into the pontine reticular formation. Rapid eye movement sleep has also been shown to increase after local administration of carbachol in the pontine reticular formation, and furthermore, acetylcholine release in the pontine tegmentum was found to increase during rapid eye movement sleep in rats. Therefore, in the present study we have investigated acetylcholine release in the pontine reticular formation during cataplexy in narcoleptic canines. Extracellular acetylcholine levels were measured

Different cardiovascular neuron groups in the ventral reticular formation of the rostral medulla in rabbits: single neurone studies.

To examine whether the cardiovascular neurons of the ventral medulla consist of functionally different kinds of neurons, single neuronal activity of the ventral medulla, activity of the renal sympathetic nerves (RSNA), blood flow of the ear (EarBF) and arterial pressure (AP) were recorded in urethane-anesthetized, vagotomized and immobilized rabbits during electrical stimulation of the aortic nerve (AN, baroreceptor afferent fibers) and electrical stimulation of the dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) that reduced EarBF but less affected on AP and RSNA. The dorsolateral funiculus of the second cerv

Isolated Paramedian Pontine Reticular Formation (PPRF) syndrome in AQP4 antibody-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Paramedian pontine reticular formation (PPRF) syndrome is characterized by horizontal gaze palsy due to lesions in the PPRF or the abducens nucleus. It is relatively rare and is typically associated with medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old Japanese woman presented with right lateral gaze palsy and facial nerve palsy, with preserved convergence and left lateral gaze. Neurological evaluation confirmed PPRF syndrome and facial nerve palsy, with no involvement of the MLF. Brain MRI showed a lesion in the right dorsal pons, affecting the PPRF

REM sleep enhancement and behavioral cataplexy following orexin (hypocretin)-II receptor antisense perfusion in the pontine reticular formation.

Orexin (hypocretin)-containing neurons of the hypothalamus project to brainstem sites that are involved in the neural control of REM sleep, including the locus coeruleus, the dorsal raphe nucleus, the cholinergic zone of the mesopontine tegmentum, and the pontine reticular formation (PRF). Orexin knockout mice exhibit narcolepsy/cataplexy, and a mutant and defective gene for the orexin type II receptor is present in dogs with an inherited form of narcolepsy/cataplexy. However, the physiological systems mediating these effects have not been described. We reasoned that, since the effector neuron

Cholinergic mechanisms in canine narcolepsy--I. Modulation of cataplexy via local drug administration into the pontine reticular formation.

Cataplexy in the narcoleptic canine has been shown to increase after systemic administration of cholinergic agonists. Furthermore, the number of cholinergic receptors in the pontine reticular formation of narcoleptic canines is significantly elevated. In the present study we have investigated the effects of cholinergic drugs administered directly into the pontine reticular formation on cataplexy, as defined by brief episodes of hypotonia induced by emotions, in narcoleptic canines. Carbachol and atropine were perfused through microdialysis probes implanted bilaterally in the pontine reticular

The effect of vagotomy on c-fos expression in the reticular formation areas following cystometry in cyclophosphamide-induced cystitis in rats.

BACKGROUND: The involvement of the vagus nerve in the supraspinal neural circuits that control the urinary bladder function, especially during pathological conditions, became increasingly evident. However, the role of brainstem areas in these circuits is not studied yet. METHODS: In the present study, using c-fos immunohistochemistry, the roles of the vagus nerve to the responses of the reticular formation to cystometry in cyclophosphamide-treated rats were investigated. RESULTS: Cyclophosphamide treatment significantly increased the c-fos expression in the lateral reticular nucleus (LRt), l

Evidence of intermediate reticular formation involvement in swallow pattern generation, recorded optically in the neonate rat sagittally sectioned hindbrain.

Swallow is a primitive behavior regulated by medullary networks, responsible for movement of food/liquid from the oral cavity to the esophagus. To investigate how functionally heterogeneous networks along the medullary intermediate reticular formation (IRt) and ventral respiratory column (VRC) control swallow, we electrically stimulated the nucleus tractus solitarius to induce fictive swallow between inspiratory bursts, with concurrent optical recordings using a synthetic Ca2+ indicator in the neonatal sagittally sectioned rat hindbrain (SSRH) preparation. Simultaneous recordings from hypoglos

Infantile hypophosphatasia combined with vitamin B6-responsive seizures and reticular formation lesions on magnetic resonance imaging: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by rachitic bone manifestations and a low serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level. It is caused by mutations in the tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP) gene, which encodes the tissue non-specific isozyme of ALP. HPP patients exhibit various presentations depending on their age at onset, such as infantile HPP combined with vitamin B6-responsive seizures. CASE PRESENTATION: A newborn with infantile HPP presented with tonic convulsions from day 5 after birth and received intravenous vitamin B6 (10mg/kg/day p

Spike discharge characteristic of the caudal mesencephalic reticular formation and pedunculopontine nucleus in MPTP-induced primate model of Parkinson disease.

The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) included in the caudal mesencephalic reticular formation (cMRF) plays a key role in the control of locomotion and wake state. Regarding its involvement in the neurodegenerative process observed in Parkinson disease (PD), deep brain stimulation of the PPN was proposed to treat levodopa-resistant gait disorders. However, the precise role of the cMRF in the pathophysiology of PD, particularly in freezing of gait and other non-motor symptoms is still not clear. Here, using micro electrode recording (MER) in 2 primates, we show that dopamine depletion did not alte

Paresis of lateral gaze alternating with so-called posterior internuclear ophthalmoplegia. A partial paramedian pontine reticular formation-abducens nucleus syndrome.

A patient with multiple myeloma developed gaze paresis to the left with slowed saccades and gaze-paretic nystagmus, which alternated with abduction palsy in the left eye (with preserved oculocephalic deviation) and dissociated adducting nystagmus in the right eye, suggesting so-called posterior internuclear ophthalmoplegia. At autopsy multiple small infarcts were found with partial destruction of the left paramedian pontine reticula formation (PPRF) extending towards the abducens nucleus, which was involved only in its inferior pole. The medial longitudinal fasciculus and other oculomotor stru

Triple projections of neurones located in S1 and S2 segments of the cat spinal cord to the C6 segment, the cerebellum and the reticular formation.

Electrophysiological investigation of neurones in sacral segments of the spinal cord was performed in alpha-chloralose-anaesthetized cats in order to establish whether at least some ascending tract neurones could diverge to three different centres located in the brainstem, the cerebellum or the spinal cord. Recordings of antidromic action potentials from cells in S1 and S2 segments were taken following stimulation of the contralateral gigantocellular nucleus, contralateral restiform body and ipsi- and contralateral grey matter of the C6 spinal segment. Antidromic responses allowed identificati

The determinant role of arterial hypertension in cardiac rhythm disturbances, both induced by electrical stimulation of the midbrain reticular formation in the cat.

The arrhythmogenic and hypertensive effect of electric stimulation of the midbrain reticular formation (MRF) is known. The aim of the present paper is to demonstrate that the hypertensive effect potentiates the arrhythmogenic effect. Ten semiacute experiments were carried out on curarized cats, stimulating the MRF by stereotoxically implanted electrodes. After stimulation complex cardiac rhythm disturbances developed (consisting in their order of appearance of tachycardia, bradycardia, ventricular extrasystoles and idioventricular paroxysmal tachycardia--IPT), as well as an increase in arteria

Evoked electrical responses of nucleus lateralis posterior of the rabbit thalamus and their dependence upon the functional state of the cortex and reticular formation.

The electrical responses of the thalamic pulvinar (of its analogue, the nucleus lateralis posterior (nLP)) to light stimuli of various intensity were recorded in awake rabbits, and their interrelationships with the responses of the retina, superior colliculi, and visual cortex were analyzed. It is postulated that a major role in the afferent supply of the rabbit nLP belongs to the optic track and the superior colliculi. The presence was demonstrated of a highly organized analyzer of the reticular control of nLP function that is of a facilitatory character. The most important role in reticular
