Pigmentary retinal degeneration and Coats' disease: a case study.

We report a 22-year-old Hispanic man with familial congenital nystagmus, iris transillumination, and pigmentary retinal anomalies with subretinal fatty exudates similar to those seen in Coats' disease. Direct treatment of the telangiectatic vessels with cryotherapy caused a subretinal hemorrhage. We therefore recommend surrounding the area of abnormal vessels (posterior to vessels and between vessels and ora serrata) with cryotherapy to reverse the formation of the vascular anomalies.

Flat preparations of the retinal vessels in Coats' disease.

Flat preparations of the retina were prepared by trypsin digestion in ten cases of Coats' disease. All of the patients were young males with advanced disease leading to enucleation. All eyes showed marked abnormalities in the arterioles, venules, and capillaries. The findings most characteristic of Coats' disease were large aneurysms and thick PAS positive deposits in vessel walls. The aneurysms ranged from 50 to 350 microns and frequently formed large sausage-like or beaded out-pouchings and were sometimes situated on shunt vessels. Other findings frequently seen, but not specific for Coats'

Clinicopathological Correlations in Enucleated Globes of Late-Stage Coats Disease with a Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Coats disease may cause diagnostic dilemma because of its variable clinical presentation that can be suspicious of retinoblastoma. Late sequelae of the disease are blinding with possible enucleation. We demonstrate the main histopathological findings of Coats enucleated eyes with literature review. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of all enucleated globes diagnosed as Coats disease over 30 years and were reviewed by two pathologists. The corresponding demographic data, clinical presentation, pre-operative clinical impression, and indication for enucleation were collected. D

[Characteristics, multimodality imaging and treatment of macular telangiectasia type 2].

Macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel 2) is an idiopathic entity which is characterized by dilated capillary network near, or around, the fovea of the macula. The spectrums secondary to macular retinal vascular inflammation or obstruction are excluded. It is a binocular disease in general. MacTel 2 is now widely recognized as a macular neurodegenerative disease rather than a simple vascular disease. This article reviews the epidemiological features, clinical features, staging, special examinations, pathogenesis and treatment of MacTel 2. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2019, 55:68-73).

Neuroprotective properties of ciliary neurotrophic factor in the retina for the treatment of macular telangiectasia type 2.

Neurotrophic factors are a family of proteins that promote the growth and survival of both developing and mature neurons. Extensive preclinical studies have demonstrated neuroprotective properties conferred by ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) in a variety of neuron types across several species. Neuroprotection that CNTF confers slows or prevents neuron loss and appears to be agnostic to the nature of the neurodegenerative mutation or injury. However, translation of these studies to the clinic remains a challenge due in part to delivery barriers inherent to the central nervous system and the

A case of macular telangiectasia type 2 with bilateral macular holes: Imaging features and surgical management.

RATIONALE: A macular hole (MH) secondary to macular telangiectasia (MacTel) type 2 is generally considered a poor surgical candidate when internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling is performed. Due to the scarcity of studies on MH in MacTel type 2 patients, the number of published studies exploring the surgical outcomes of these patients is limited. PATIENT CONCERNS: In this case report, we report a case with MacTel type 2 with bilateral MHs and had a good visual prognosis after surgical treatments. DIAGNOSES: A 66-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for macular abnormalities in the r

Retinal Vascular Changes in a Case of Straatsma Syndrome.

A 34-year-old asymptomatic woman with a history of amblyopia in her right eye presented for a routine examination. Fundus examination revealed broad myelinated nerve fibers along with telangiectatic vessels. Wide-field fluorescein angiography revealed no evidence of ischemia or active retinal neovascularization. However, myelinated nerve fibers can infrequently exhibit cooccurring retinal vascular anomalies, harboring the potential for sight-threatening complications. Patients should be carefully monitored for the development of neovascularization and secondary complications. [Ophthalmic Surg

Relation of interdigitation zone changes and right-angle vessels in Macular Telangiectasia Type-2 (MacTel).

BACKGROUND: To study the relation between interdigitation zone (IDZ) and right-angle vessel (RAV) in Macular Telangiectasia Type-2 (MacTel). METHODS: A total of 43 eyes of 38 patients with presence of definite RAV on colour fundus photograph (Gass and Blodi-only stage-3) were confirmed on multimodal imaging. The relation of IDZ changes and associated ellipsoid zone (EZ) alterations on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) with RAV were studied at baseline and these OCT changes were followed up in 15 eyes over a mean of 3.86 years. RESULTS: A total of 58 RAVs were found in the 43

Treatment of Coats' disease with photocoagulation.

71 eyes with Coats' disease were treated with photocoagulation. By coagulation of the abnormal vessels the disease process could be halted in 64 eyes over a mean observation time of 2 years and 3 months after completion of treatment. In 51 of these eyes the lipoid deposits regressed. In only 7 eyes a progression of the disease could not be prevented. Complications of photocoagulation treatment were not observed.

Two sisters with telangiectases [corrected], spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, hypothyroidism, neovascularization and tractional retinal detachments: a new entity?

Two sisters had an unusual constellation of findings, including telangiectases [corrected] involving the face and limbs, unclassifiable spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and tractional retinal detachment preceded by retinal and iris neovascularization. To our knowledge, this combination of defects has not been previously documented in the literature.
