The "Dark Side" of Pre-Retirement Work Attachment for Later-Life Mental Health: Mediating Role of Retirement Adjustment and Moderating Role of Social Network.

BACKGROUND: With rapid population aging and extended post-retirement lifespan, understanding the modifiable psychological and social processes that shape retirees' mental health has become increasingly important for behavioral health management. However, the mechanisms linking pre-retirement work attachment and retirement adjustment to post-retirement mental health remain poorly understood. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 302 Chinese community-dwelling retirees and assessed work attachments (work-family centrality [WFC] and affective organizational commitment [AOC]), retirement a

Transition to Retirement Impact on Physical Activity: Longitudinal Temporal Trajectories of Frequency and Intensity From the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe.

BACKGROUND: Major life course transitions such as retirement may substantially affect lifestyles. Despite the well-established benefits of physical activity (PA) in older ages, evidence on its relationship with retirement remains inconsistent. This study examines the impact of retirement on PA frequency and intensity in the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe. METHODS: Longitudinal data from Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe waves 1 to 8 (2004-2020) were analyzed. The exposure was the time relative to retirement, modeled across preretirement and postretirement

Time to check up: Retirement and cancer screening in Australia.

Cancer screening is central to early detection and healthy ageing, yet evidence on how major life transitions shape screening uptake remains limited. Using four waves of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey covering 2009, 2013, 2017, and 2021, with 18,875 person-wave observations from 8343 individuals aged 50-75, we estimate the causal effect of retirement on cancer screening using an instrumental-variable design that exploits discontinuities in Age Pension eligibility. Retirement significantly increases participation in organised cancer screening, with the cle

Occupational strain and post-retirement rehabilitation among older factory workers.

BackgroundLong-term factory work involves repetitive, physically demanding tasks that contribute to musculoskeletal degeneration in later life, particularly affecting the knee and cervical spine among ageing workers. Qualitative evidence on how retired industrial workers perceive occupational strain, arthritis progression and post-retirement rehabilitation remains limited.ObjectiveTo explore the lived experiences of retired factory workers with knee and neck arthritis, focusing on perceived occupational causation, functional limitations and access to post-retirement rehabilitation services.Met

Retirement: Fostering Physician Well-being Over the Career Life Cycle.

This manuscript is the last chapter in a series of 5 articles considering physician well-being during the course of a career. It focuses on the retirement stage, which follows planning for retirement and deciding when and how to retire. We view retirement as a process, characterized by recalibrating professional and personal activities while maintaining a sense of purpose and meaning in life. Some retirees may continue to work in medicine by seeing patients part-time or mentoring medical students, residents, and junior colleagues. Others may leave their lifelong work and seek joy and meaning i

Interventions aiming to reduce early retirement due to rheumatic diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Aging of the population and early retirement translates into productivity losses to society. Persistence of working life is crucial to counteract this sustainability issue faced by western countries. Musculoskeletal and rheumatic diseases (RD) may cause work disability and early exit from work, including early retirement. The objective of this article is to review the current knowledge about interventions aiming to reduce early retirement due to RD. METHODS: We searched PubMed and The Cochrane Library for studies either in English or Portuguese between January 2000 and June 2016

[Assessment of tele-expertise among elderly subjects in retirement homes].

BACKGROUND: Chronic wounds (leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, etc.) constitute a real public health problem and engender high economic and human costs. Due to the declining physical and mental conditions of our elderly subjects and their rural environment, we created a computer program to assist with chronic wound management in elderly subjects living in retirement homes and to reduce the amount of ambulance transportation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each participating establishment was provided with a digital camera and its own secure e-mail address in order to allow photographs

Gay and lesbian perceptions of discrimination in retirement care facilities.

Much research on older gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) adults has focused on refuting the widely held misconceptions people have about GLBT lifestyles. To date, however, few studies on older GLBTs have examined their social and health care needs. Further, most studies have collected survey samples of older GLBT adults in large metropolitan areas and have not specifically addressed discrimination or bias in retirement care facilities. In the current exploratory study on perceptions of discrimination and bias in retirement care facilities, we surveyed a wide age range GLBT adults i

Retirement intentions of late-career female nurses: a phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Population aging, labour shortages and economic conditions are increasing concerns worldwide regarding retirement decisions of nurses. Although previous studies have examined factors influencing nurses' retirement, limited research has explored how late-career female nurses perceive and experience the transition to retirement, particularly from a qualitative perspective, and how these perceptions reflect the current situation in healthcare settings. Hence, this study aims to fill this gap by exploring the perceptions of late-career female nurses about retirement and the interplay o

The Effect of Catastrophic Health Expenditure on Work After Retirement.

Several factors can force retirees to go to paid work. Catastrophic health-care expenditure (CHCE) is one of the driving forces for retirees to go to paid work. This cross-sectional study was based on 6,307 Iran retirees' data. Xu method was used to calculate CHCE, and a logit model was estimated to show the association between CHCE and bridge employment. Other control variables were added to the model. The findings showed that there was positive relationship between CHCE and bridge employment. Retirement pension had negative relationship with work after retirement. Prevalence of work after re

Pathways through which health influences early retirement: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Due to the aging of the population, there is a societal need for workers to prolong their working lives. In the Netherlands, many employees still leave the workforce before the official retirement age of 65. Previous quantitative research showed that poor self-perceived health is a risk factor of (non-disability) early retirement. However, little is known on how poor health may lead to early retirement, and why poor health leads to early retirement in some employees, but not in others. Therefore, the present qualitative study aims to identify in which ways health influences early r

Fitness for work and the aging workforce: medical assessment as a de facto mechanism of retirement in the United Kingdom after the abolition of the default retirement age.

BACKGROUND: Fitness for work is the judgement that a person is medically able to perform a role safely. This review considers the concept to have been shaped for a younger workforce expected to leave employment at a fixed retirement age. As populations have aged and mandatory retirement ages have been abolished, it is the instrument that remains available for questions it was not designed to answer. METHODS: This review traces the origins of the concept and examines what fitness for work means when applied to an aging workforce and the risks of relying on it at scale. RESULTS: Aging is gradu
