Concussion Education for Athletes: Symptom Reporting and Safe Return to Sport.

» Educational programs on concussion have been demonstrated to improve knowledge for athletes, families, athletic trainers, and coaches about concussion, with the goal of reducing concussion incidence, duration, severity, and complications.» Despite the widespread availability and often mandatory concussion education provided to high school and collegiate athletes, there has not been an adequate change in knowledge, attitudes, and self-reporting behavior in this population.» Recently published studies suggest improving concussion education by emphasizing athletes' symptom reporting behavior, t

Return to sport following Latarjet glenoid reconstruction for anterior shoulder instability.

BACKGROUND: Latarjet coracoid transfer reconstruction is the gold standard for the treatment of recurrent shoulder instability with anterior-inferior glenoid bone loss, and return to sport is often a primary outcome of interest in this patient population. The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of return to sport in patients undergoing the Latarjet procedure and variables that are associated with a higher likelihood of a successful return to sport. METHODS: A prospectively maintained institutional registry was retrospectively queried between August 2012 and August 2016 for all pat

Playing hurt: hand and wrist injuries and protected return to sport.

When treating hand and wrist injuries, there is often an opportunity to allow an athlete to return to play before complete healing of the injury and/or surgery. Protective devices can make this possible. The risks of returning to play in this manner depend on many factors including the injury itself, position played, hand dominance, etc. Communication between treating health care professional, athlete, trainer, and coaches is critical in this decision process. Protective options include taping, custom-made splints, commercially available braces, soft casts, and hard casts. Ability to use these

Calf Injuries: An Anatomy-Based Approach to Diagnosis, Management and Return to Sport.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Calf muscle injuries are common in athletes but represent a heterogeneous group of lesions involving different muscles and myoconnective structures. This review provides a practical overview of gastrocnemius-soleus injuries, with particular emphasis on how anatomical characterization can contribute to diagnosis, management and return-to-sport decision-making. It also examines the limitations of current evidence and the extent to which increasingly detailed imaging findings translate into clinically meaningful information. RECENT FINDINGS: Advances in ultrasound and magnetic

Sports Medicine: Sports Event Care and Return to Play.

In 2008, approximately 60 million children, adolescents, and young adults were involved in organized sports, which account for more than 3.5 million injuries each year. Family physicians often create and implement return to play (RTP) protocols for athletes. If a concussion is suspected in an athlete, the athlete should be withdrawn immediately from participation in sports and monitored with serial assessments. There is no same-day RTP for athletes with concussion. A brief period of physical and cognitive rest is suggested, with a gradual return to activity. Transient brachial neuropraxia, als

Neuroperiodization After Sport-Related Concussion: A Perspective on Adaptive Load Prescription Within the Amsterdam Return-to-Sport Strategy.

Background/Objectives: Contemporary sport-related concussion management has shifted from prolonged rest toward early, symptom-limited activity and a staged return-to-sport strategy. The Amsterdam framework provides an essential safety hierarchy but does not fully operationalize how clinicians should manipulate exercise dose, task complexity, recovery, and interacting rehabilitation domains within each stage. This Perspective proposes neuroperiodization as a constrained, criterion-based load-prescription framework nested within the Amsterdam strategy. Framework Development: The framework distin

Home-Based Measurements of Nocturnal Cardiac Parasympathetic Activity in Athletes during Return to Sport after Sport-Related Concussion.

Sport-related concussions (SRC) are characterized by impaired autonomic control. Heart rate variability (HRV) offers easily obtainable diagnostic approaches to SRC-associated dysautonomia, but studies investigating HRV during sleep, a crucial time for post-traumatic cerebral regeneration, are relatively sparse. The aim of this study was to assess nocturnal HRV in athletes during their return to sports (RTS) after SRC in their home environment using wireless wrist sensors (E4, Empatica, Milan, Italy) and to explore possible relations with clinical concussion-associated sleep symptoms. Eighteen

Return to sport in athletes after surgical ankle fractures: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Ankle fractures represent a significant health concern for athletes, comprising 15%-25% of all sports-related injuries. With increasing sports participation across all age groups, the public health impact of these injuries is expected to grow. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is a common approach to managing ankle fractures, particularly for athletes requiring rapid return to sports. However current information on the return to sports post-injury is largely anecdotal. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using keywords related to ankle fractures and spo

Qualitative Research in Return to Sport: a Current Review of the Literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Return to sport (RTS) is an important metric tied to patient satisfaction after receiving treatment for a sports-related injury. Recently, there has been an explosion of literature on RTS; yet a comprehensive review encompassing multiple injuries does not exist. Furthermore, RTS has historically been defined by quantitative measures that assess strength, function, and pain but little consideration has been given to psychologic factors nor has there been an open-ended forum for athletes to share with health care providers which factors they feel are most influential for RTS.

Return to Sport After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Among Physically Active Adults.

An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of athletes' most severe and frequent knee ligament injuries. The primary function of the ACL is preventing excessive anterior tibial translation, and it limits varus/valgus stress when the knee is in full extension and rotatory movements. Returning to sport after an ACL injury is a crucial aim of ACL reconstruction (ACLR). Multiple factors, modifiable and nonmodifiable, can influence the time to return to sport. This study aimed to discuss factors that affect optimal return-to-play (RTP) timing, symptom recurrence, and long-term consequences of an AC

Double level osteotomy for genu varum: Is a return to sport possible?

INTRODUCTION: A double level osteotomy (DLO) may be indicated in patients with genu varum when the deformity involves both the tibia and femur. These patients, who are often young and active, have a high functional demand and hope for a rapid return to sport. The purpose of our study was to assess return to sport and functional outcomes following DLO for symptomatic genu varum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 40 patients (mean age 45.5±2 years) who underwent a DLO between 2018 and 2020, performed in 2 different hospitals, were reviewed after a minimum follow-up of 1-year. Return to sport after early surgical repair of acute patellar tendon ruptures.

INTRODUCTION: Patellar tendon ruptures make up about 5% of all extensor mechanism injuries. They mainly occur in young, athletic men who have contributing risk factors such as chronic tendinopathy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the return to sport after repair of an acute patellar tendon rupture. We hypothesized that surgical repair yields good functional outcomes with a high rate of return to competitive sports in patients treated with the same surgical technique. METHODS: This retrospective study involved 23 cases of patellar tendon rupture in 20 patients (2 women, 18 men). The aver
