Factors influencing return to work after stroke in Japan.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Few studies have identified factors that predict return to work after stroke in Japan. Our aim in this study was to determine the predictors of return to work after stroke in Japan. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study on the association between patients' characteristics at admission and return to work in 230 first-stroke patients, adjusting for potential confounding factors. The patients were all aged younger than 65 years and were working, students, or housewives at the time of their stroke. Return to work was evaluated by a follow-up questionnaire. Dat

Predictive factors for return to work after shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Return to work (RTW) is a crucial outcome parameter for active patients undergoing shoulder arthroplasty. However, literature reporting on RTW rates is scarce. The purpose of this study was to assess the RTW rate following shoulder arthroplasty in patients of working age and to identify factors associated with successful RTW. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients under 63 years of age who underwent shoulder arthroplasty with a minimal follow-up of 2 years. Participants completed 2 types of questionnaires: a work-specific questionnaire and questionnaires to ass

Return to Work Following Novel Lumbar Total Joint Replacement.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVE: Lumbar fusion surgery, while effective in certain cases, carries with it the risk of subsequent reoperation as well as functional limitations. Lumbar total joint replacement (TJR) has emerged as a potential alternative, to address many degenerative pathologies while preserving motion. This retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data evaluates the return-to-work (RTW) outcomes of patients undergoing lumbar TJR and measures the impact of various factors on the time to RTW. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: A cohort of 56 patients who underwent

[Return to Work after Mental Disorders - A Scoping Review].

OBJECTIVE: Workers on sick-leave due to a mental disorder have enormous problems to return to work. The main objective of this review is to examine different return-to-work (RTW) interventions. METHODS: We conduct a systematic literature research. RESULTS: 88 articles were screened and 29 studies included. The included RTW-interventions build on different approaches: 1) individual, 2) workplace, 3) mental health services. The majority of the interventions showed positive effects on the return-to-work process. CONCLUSION: Even if not all interventions could be readily transferred to the Germ

Recovery and Return to Work After a Pelvic Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic ring fractures (PRFs) may influence the daily activities and quality of life of the injured. The aim of this retrospective study was to explore the functional outcomes and factors related to return to work (RTW) after PRF. METHODS: During the years 2003-2012, 282 injured individuals aged 20-55 years on the date of the accident, were hospitalized and treated for PRFs in a large tertiary hospital in Athens, Greece. One hundred and three patients were traced and contacted; 77 who were on paid employment prior to the accident gave their informed consent to participate in the su

Important factors influencing the return to work after stroke.

BACKGROUND: As the field of rehabilitation shifts its focus towards improving functional capacity instead of managing disability, return to work (RTW) and return to the community emerge as key goals in a person's recovery from major disabling illness such as stroke. OBJECTIVE: To compile important factors believed to influence RTW after a stroke. METHODS: Based on a comprehensive literature review, we clustered similar factors and organized these factors based on the International Classification of Function, Disability and Health (ICF) framework: body functions or structure, activity partici

Determinants of return to work after carpal tunnel release.

PURPOSE: The determinants of time to return to work-a common measure of treatment effectiveness-are incompletely defined. Our primary hypothesis was that employment circumstances are the strongest determinant of earlier return to work. Our secondary hypothesis was that return to work in patients with desk-based jobs is predicted by patient expectations and other psychosocial factors. METHODS: We enrolled 65 employed patients with limited incision open carpal tunnel release in a prospective cohort study. Patients completed validated measures of depression, coping strategies, pain anxiety, and

Researcher perspectives on competencies of return-to-work coordinators.

PURPOSE: Return-to-work (RTW) coordination programs are successful in reducing long-term work disability, but research reports have not adequately described the role and competencies of the RTW coordinator. This study was conducted to clarify the impact of RTW coordinators, and competencies (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) required to achieve optimal RTW outcomes in injured workers. METHODS: Studies involving RTW coordination for injured workers were identified through literature review. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 principal investigators to obtain detailed information

Predictors of return to work after anterior cervical discectomy.

Return to previous level of employment after surgery is important to patients. Predictors of return to work have been well described in lumbar disc surgery. However, this information cannot be generalized to the population undergoing cervical discectomy. The authors retrospectively reviewed 67 consecutive patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy. Strict inclusion criteria were used. Baseline demographics were recorded as well as other potential predictors of postoperative return to work such as number of levels of disease, smoking history, and disability claims. Follow-up informatio

[Return to work after occupational accidents and occupational diseases].

The key formula "by all suitable means" is a structural support for successful occupational reintegration. In this respect, the special system of accident insurance administered primarily through the "Berufsgenossenschaften" (BG), differs from the other branches of social security. This system's roots in civil law do not allow any comparison with the principle of public law insurance underlying the other branches of social security in Germany. Under the statutory accident insurance scheme, the employer, i.e., the liable party within the employment relationship, has to compensate any health dam

[Return to work and cardiovascular status after myocardial infarction].

110 male subjects, under 60, admitted for myocardial infarction in 1980 and 1981, have been considered. 85 answers to the questionnaire, sent by post have been obtained, 6 pertaining to patients who died in the meanwhile. Among the 79 living patients who replied, 57 (72.1%) had resumed work within the average time of 4.8 months (min. 0.5-max. 12). Return to work has been significantly higher among self-employed people than employees; only 15 subjects had changed job or task. The subjective rating of the actual health status, two years after the infarction, has been satisfactory in 90.5% of cas

Return to work outcomes after work-related hand trauma: the role of causal attributions.

PURPOSE: This study examined the relationship between workers' judgments of responsibility for their accidents (causal attributions) and work-site avoidance after work-related injuries. METHODS: Ninety-two hand-injured workers referred for psychologic treatment of posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms were assessed for their beliefs about the cause(s) of their accidents. Causal attributions were obtained before and after psychologic intervention. RESULTS: Workers who blamed coworkers or equipment for their injuries were more likely to resist returning to former work activities than wo

Predictors of returning to work.

An investigation of predictors of returning to work in a sample of physically injured persons who are receiving workers' compensation benefits and vocational rehabilitation is presented. One hundred fourteen injured subjects (86 with back injury; 28, other injury) undergoing vocational rehabilitation and receiving workers' compensation benefits were assessed on demographic, emotional, cognitive, financial incentive, and miscellaneous variables. Predictors for returning to work were identified using stepwise logistic regression. Patients with moderate or severe depression, defined as a score gr

What factors influence return to work after major traumatic injury?

There is considerable variability in return-to-work (RTW) outcomes for individuals with major traumatic injuries, including traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury (SCI) and multi-trauma orthopaedic (MTO) injury. This study aimed to understand how injury-related, demographic and psychosocial factors and access to vocational rehabilitation interact to determine likelihood and time to RTW at one and two years post-injury. Participants were 170 adults employed pre-injury, enrolled in a trial of early vocational rehabilitation and followed up one- and/or two years post-injury. Of the 143

Surgeons' Recommendations for Return to Work After Carpal Tunnel Release.

BACKGROUND: Recommendations and expectations regarding return to work (RTW) after carpal tunnel release (CTR) are often inconsistent. The study aim was to describe preferences of American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) members for perioperative management of patients following CTR, emphasizing surgeon preference regarding RTW. METHODS: A survey was sent to all ASSH members with active e-mail addresses. The primary outcome was the recommended time frame for patients to RTW full duty. Secondarily, associated factors with RTW were evaluated. RESULTS: In total, 4109 e-mail surveys were s
