Lungworm infection in three loggerhead sea turtles, Caretta caretta.

Although lungworms are known to infect many mammalian species and a few are known to infect snakes, lizards, and birds, previously none were known to infect chelonians. This study documents the first three known cases of lungworms in loggerhead sea turtles, Caretta caretta. It is unlikely that the lungworms were the primary cause of illness in any of the cases, and they may be only contributory or even incidental. Changes observed in the two cases that died included tracheal and bronchial epithelial hyperplasia and goblet cell hyperplasia. Lesions caused directly by the parasites seem to be re

[IMPACT OF CASPIAN SEA LEVEL FLUCTUATIONS ON THE EPIZOOTIC ACTIVITY OF THE CASPIAN SANDY NATURAL PLAGUE FOCUS].

There is evidence that in 1923-2014 the sharp aggravations of the epizootic situation of plague in the area of its Caspian sandy natural focus after long interepizootic periods are in time with the ups of the Caspian Sea in the extrema of 11-year solar cycles. There were cases of multiple manifestations of plague in the same areas in the epizootic cycles of 1946-1954, 1979-1996, 2001, and 2013-2014. The paper considers the possible role of amebae of the genus Acanthamoeba and nematodes, the representatives of the orders Rhabditida and Tylenchida in the microfocal pattern of plague manifestatio

Gnathostoma doloresi in domestic pigs in the Republic of Palau, 2020-2022.

Gnathostoma adult worms were found in the stomachs of domestic pigs in the Republic of Palau, with a prevalence of 0.7% (2/277) in the meat inspections conducted between 2020 and 2022. Based on morphological characteristics and nucleotide sequence analysis, the worms were identified as the adult stage of Gnathostoma doloresi Tubangui, 1925 (Rhabditida: Gnathostomatidae). These findings suggest the presence of this zoonotic nematode in Palau, which warrants further surveillance to determine its route of transmission in this island country.

Sand Fly Colony Crash Tentatively Attributed to Nematode Infestation.

Maintenance of laboratory colonies of insects and other arthropod pests offers significant research advantages. The availability, age, sex, housing conditions, nutrition, and relative uniformity over time of biological material for research facilitate comparison of results between experiments that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. A laboratory research colony of Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli), old world sand flies, was maintained with high-colony productivity for a number of years, but within a relatively short (4-6 mo) time period, colony productivity declined from over 10,000 flies

First case of fatal equine meningoencephalitis caused by Halicephalobus gingivalis in Mexico.

Aberrant nematode larval migration in the CNS of horses is rare but frequently fatal; one of the main etiological agents involved in this illness is Halicephalobus gingivalis. This soil nematode has been associated with several fatal equine meningoencephalitis reports worldwide; however, it had never been diagnosed in horses of Mexico. A 10 year-old Andalusian horse presented dysphagia, fever, weakness, prostration and ataxia; the patient expired during the medical attention. Post mortem examination was performed and no gross alterations were found. Histopathology revealed meningoencephalitis,

An outbreak of bovine meningoencephalomyelitis with identification of Halicephalobus gingivalis.

Halicephalobus gingivalis is an opportunistic parasite which is known to cause fatal meningoencephalomyelitis primarily in equines but sporadically also in humans. In April 2014, laboratory examination of the head of a young dairy calf, euthanized due to severe central nervous system symptoms, revealed the presence of granulomatous to necrotizing encephalitis and myriads of nematodes in the brain lesion. Morphologically the parasites were identified as H. gingivalis. The diagnosis was confirmed by molecular analysis of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA and the small subunit (SSU) rRNA genes, reveal

Pelodera: cosmopolitan phoretic saprotrophs and neglected models for origins of nematode parasitism.

Pelodera (A. Schneider, 1866) is a Clade V nematode genus of the Rhabditidae family and close relative of Caenorhabditis elegans. The genus comprises 26 species poised between free-living, commensal, and parasitic lifestyles, as well as species with underappreciated roles in soil nutrient cycling. Pelodera strongyloides, the type species, is a cause of follicular larva migrans among humans and other mammals but can be confused with hookworm folliculitis. With minimal genetic resources available, the capacity to identify and diagnose infectious species and strains of Pelodera are limited. Thus,

Pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic assessment of the ivermectin and abamectin nematodicidal interaction in cattle.

In a context of nematodicidal resistance, anthelmintic combinations have emerged as a reliable pharmacological strategy to control gastrointestinal nematodes in grazing systems of livestock production. The current work evaluated the potential drug-drug interactions following the coadministration of two macrocyclic lactones (ML) ivermectin (IVM) and abamectin (ABM) to parasitized cattle using a pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) approach. The kinetic behavior of both compounds administered either separately or coadministered was assessed and the therapeutic response of the combination was

Interaction of microbial populations in Steinernema (Steinernematidae, Nematoda) infected Galleria mellonella larvae.

Infection of Galleria mellonella larvae with the entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema feltiae (A21 and R strains) and Steinernema glaseri (Dongrae) resulted in several species of bacteria, including the respective bacterial symbiont, Xenorhabdus spp., growing in the infected insect cadavers. These other bacteria were Enterococcus in all three nematode infections studied and Acinetobacter in the S. feltiae infections. The respective populations of these bacteria changed with time. Following infection of G. mellonella larvae with any one of the Steinernema sp., only Enterococcus bacteria were

Nematode eggs observed in cytology of cerebrospinal fluid diagnostic for intramedullary Spirocerca lupi spinal cord migration.

Spinal spirocercosis due to aberrant Spirocerca lupi nematode migration is an emerging etiology for acute myelitis in dogs in Israel, causing severe, mostly nonsymmetrical hind limb paresis or paralysis, and sometimes tetraparesis or tetraparalysis. So far, incidental identification of parasites during spinal surgery or at necropsy provides the only definite diagnosis, while antemortem diagnosis of this condition has been uncertain. Specifically, antemortem diagnosis is based on the typical clinical presentation of acute, progressive, asymmetrical hind limb paresis or paralysis, with moderate

A nodular granulomatous posthitis caused by Halicephalobus sp. in a horse.

This report describes a case of nodular posthitis caused by Halicephalobus gingivalis in a 24-year-old warmblood horse. Macroscopic examination revealed a multinodular, partially ulcerated mass on the external lamina of the prepuce. Nematode migration from unfixed biopsy material in phosphate-buffered saline revealed adult nematodes with the typical morphological features of H. gingivalis: distinctive rhabditiform oesophagus with corpus, isthmus and bulb and the dorsoflexed ovary. The main histopathological features consisted of submucosal confluent granulomatous foci containing cross- and tan

Scavenging behavior and interspecific competition decrease offspring fitness of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema feltiae.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are well-studied biocontrol agents of soil-dwelling arthropod pests. The insecticidal efficiency of EPNs is modulated by food web dynamics. EPNs can reproduce in freeze-killed insect larvae, even in competition with free-living bacterivorous nematodes (FLBNs) in the genus Oscheius. The objective of this study was to assess the efficiency of EPNs as scavengers when competing with free-living saprophagous nematodes and fungi, and to determine the possible impact on subsequent EPN offspring fitness. Live and freeze-killed larvae of Galleria mellonella were used t

CRISPR-Cas9-based Mutagenesis in the Entomopathogenic Nematode Steinernema hermaphroditum and the Maintenance of Mutant Lines.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in the genus Steinernema and Heterorhabditis maintain mutualistic interactions with Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus symbiotic bacteria, respectively. Together, these nematode-bacterium pairs infect and kill insect hosts that are primarily larvae from the orders of Lepidoptera and Coleoptera, forming a tractable tripartite system for dissecting the molecular basis of mutualism and parasitism. A key step towards fully utilizing this model is the development of stable and transgenerational genetic  tools in EPNs. Here, we demonstrate a reliable CRISPR-Cas9 genome ed
