Rheology of sickle cells and its role in microcirculatory dynamics.

The alterations in the viscoelastic properties of the hemoglobin S solution following deoxygenation can be correlated, on the one hand, with the gelation of the HbS molecules and, on the other hand, with changes in the rheological behavior of the deoxygenated SS erythrocytes. The abnormal rheology of SS erythrocytes forms the basis of their altered flow behavior through filter pores in vitro and microcirculation in vivo. The results support the notion that the rheological behavior of sickle cells is an important link between the molecular events in hemoglobin S following deoxygenation and the

Fluid rheology modulates particle enrichment kinetics in acoustic-oscillatory microfluidics.

Efficient particle enrichment underpins microfluidic clinical diagnostics, yet many biologically relevant samples are non-Newtonian and their behaviour in acoustic-oscillatory systems remains incompletely understood. Here, we compare particle-enrichment kinetics in Newtonian glycerol-water (GW), viscoelastic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), and shear-thinning xanthan gum (XG) solutions using a common acoustic-oscillatory microfluidic platform. The enrichment rate followed the order PEO > water > XG > GW under representative conditions. At fac = 1 MHz, Vpp = 17 V, and fflow = 12 Hz, 1.4 wt% PEO redu

Could dilated cardiomyopathy alter the peripheral microcirculation and blood rheology?

Our aim was to perform a preliminary study of blood flow in the peripheral microcirculation in patients with heart failure. Cardiac patients were investigated to establish possible microcirculatory changes due to this pathology. We evaluated 16 patients (non-smokers, dislipidemic with hypercholesterolemia), receiving oral treatment and in NYHA class 2.3 +/- 0.5. A dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) group was evaluated before cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) obtained by biventricular intra-cardiac defibrillator (ICD) implantation, and again 3 months after its implantation. We measured the ejec

Rheology-guided multiscale engineering of microvoid-suppressed thermally conductive adhesives.

Vertically stacked electronics require thermal interface adhesives that conduct heat through confined bondlines while retaining adhesion after placement. Yet, highly filled ceramic adhesives are still commonly designed as bulk composites, with performance pursued by increasing filler loading or filler conductivity. This view overlooks how heat transport and adhesion are determined within the formed bondline, where filler connectivity, shear-dependent processability, wetting, and trapped air collectively govern performance. Here, we introduce a rheology-guided bondline densification strategy fo

Rheology Modifying Reagents for Clay-Rich Mineral Suspensions: A Review.

In the mining industry, key unit operations such as grinding, flotation, thickening, and tailings transport are negatively affected by the presence of clay minerals, which impart complex rheological behaviors to mineral suspensions by increasing their rheological properties. This deterioration arises from specific physicochemical characteristics of clay minerals such as fine particle size, anisotropic character, laminar morphology, and swelling capacity. This work reviews the effects of various rheology-modifying reagents on clay suspensions including kaolinite, illite, and montmorillonite. Th

Prediction of Foam Rheology Models Parameters Utilizing Machine Learning Tools.

Rheological models are usually used to predict foamed fluid viscosity; however, obtaining the model constants under various conditions is challenging. Hence, this paper investigated the effect of different variables on foam rheology, such as shear rate, temperature, pressure, surfactant types, gas phase, and salinity, using a high-pressure high-temperature foam rheometer. Power-law, Bingham plastic, and Casson fluid models fit the experimental data well. Therefore, the data were fed to different machine learning techniques to evaluate the rheological model constants with different features. In

Rheology-sensitive response of zeolite-supported anti-inflammatory drug systems.

Drug release from inorganic supports is a challenge for the scientific community for various reasons, related to the low costs of the systems and the possibility of easily regulating the drug release. In the present work, surface-modified zeolite particles are used as carriers for non steroidal antiflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The release of the drug has been studied in a solution that simulates the intestinal fluid as well as in a gel-like system, based on a surfactant and a binding salt. In the solution case, the quantity of drug released has been tracked via spectrophotometric assay. Release

Interplay of crosslinking architecture and interparticle interactions in microgel suspension rheology.

HYPOTHESIS: Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgels are highly porous polymer networks whose mechanical properties are governed not only by environmental factors but also by their internal architecture. We hypothesize that the internal structure of microgels, together with interparticle interactions, synergistically regulates the macroscopic rheological behavior of microgel suspensions. EXPERIMENTS: Frequency-sweep measurements were performed to identify the suspension states, evaluate shear-induced structural breakdown and recovery, and monitor continuous volume phase transitions unde

Effects of plasma donation on blood rheology and peripheral vascular function.

Plasma donation, the removal of plasma and reinfusion of cellular components, is widely used to produce plasma-derived products; however its physiological effects on blood rheology and peripheral vascular function remain poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of plasma donation (Investigation 1) on blood viscosity, red blood cell (RBC) deformability and aggregation, and brachial artery reactive hyperaemia flow-mediated dilatation (RH-FMD), and compared these responses with those induced by frusemide-mediated haemoconcentration (40 mg; Investigation 2) to isolate the independent

Spinach leaf and chloroplast lipid: A natural rheology modifier for chocolate?

In this study the possibility of replacing current surfactants in chocolate formulations with natural lipids extracted from spinach leaf (SPLIP) or spinach chloroplast (CH.SPLIP) was evaluated. SPLIP and CH.SPLIP were extracted with chloroform/methanol following enzyme deactivation with hot isopropanol. Results showed a higher extraction yield for SPLIP while glycolipids were more concentrated in CH.SPLIP. Sugar/oil suspensions with dispersed volume fractions of 0.28, 0.33 and 0.37 containing 0.1% to 0.7% (w/w) surfactant (SPLIP, CH.SPLIP, lecithin and PGPR as commercial references) based on o

Blood rheology as a mirror of endocrine and metabolic homeostasis in health and disease1.

Rheological properties of plasma and blood cells are markedly influenced by the surrounding milieu: physicochemical factors, metabolism and hormones. Acid/base status, osmolality, lipid status, plasma protein pattern, oxidative stress induced by increased free radicals production, endothelium-derived factors such as nitric oxide (NO), achidonic acid derivatives modulate both red blood cell (RBC) and white cell mechanics. Therefore, regulatory axes involving liver, endothelium, kidney, pancreas, adrenal gland, endocrine heart, adipose tissue, pituitary gland, and surely other tissues play impor

Rheology and molecular mobility of amorphous blends of citric acid and paracetamol.

The aim of this study was to investigate the rheological properties, molecular mobility and crystallization tendency of pure citric acid and paracetamol or blends of them. Amorphous samples were produced by ethanol-evaporation or by melt-quenching. Enthalpy recovery, glass fragility and heat capacity were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Other physical characterization methods were rheology and the crystallization tendency using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and DSC. All the samples behaved as Newtonian liquids and they were fragile glasses. The 50/50 (w/w,%) blend had

The effect of priming techniques of ultrafiltrators on blood rheology: an in vitro evaluation.

The increased interest of using ultrafiltration during cardiopulmonary bypass ICPB) has mandated a re-evaluation of the hematological effects of this blood conservation process. 'Rinse-free' ultrafiltrators can be primed using either crystalloid or blood prior to use. It is unknown whether one priming technique results in superior results in ultrafiltration quality. An in vitro circuit was designed to evaluate the Sorin/COBE HC1400 (n=6), the Lifestream HC70 (n=6), and the Terumo/Sarns HC11 (n=6). All test conditions were conducted at a blood flow rate of 250 ml/min and a transmembrane pressur

Mechanical signature of cancer cells: From cytoskeletal alterations to cell rheology.

The continued rise in cancer-related deaths suggests that the precise nature of the disease remains poorly understood. In the field of cellular mechanics, researchers have identified mechanobiological aspects of cancer cells by examining the link between their physical and molecular properties and functions, thereby revealing some of their previously unknown characteristics. Therefore, expanding scientific insight in this area may deepen our understanding of genetic and mechanical interactions and clarify the functional mechanisms at both the cellular and subcellular levels. Accordingly, in th

Colloidal packing fraction in sedimented aluminum adjuvants dictate their resuspension rheology.

Vaccine formulations containing aluminum adjuvants can be difficult to resuspend after prolonged storage, rendering them unsuitable for administration. While earlier studies suggested that the increased flocculation generated loosely packed sediments, there is a lack of mechanistic understanding on how particle packing affects resuspendability. In this study, we observe an exponential correlation between the weight fraction of sediments and the number of inversions required for complete resuspension of aluminum phosphate adjuvants formulated with varying ionic strengths (0 and 150 mM sodium ch

Research on composite foundation rheology using the combined rheological element model.

The safety and stability of the dam are affected by the rheology created by the deep soft soil layer following composite foundation reinforcement. Based on the classical combined element modeling, a new combined rheological element model is proposed in this paper. The consolidated rheological and fluid-solid coupling model is established by COMSOL to simulate the deep soft soil composite dam foundation. The results demonstrate that the model can better respond to the actual situation of stress, deformation, and seepage in each stage of the dam, and the error is within 5%. The strength and stif

Rheology of hemoglobin S gels: possible correlation with impaired microvascular circulation.

The sequence of pathogenic events in sickle cell disease begins with the genetic abnormality and proceeds through molecular and red cell abnormalities to clinical events of vascular obstruction, hemolysis, and crisis. The least studied event, central in the sequence, is altered viscosity and rheology of the gelled deoxyhemoglobin S. In this work, shear is shown not only to measure the formation of gels, but to alter the progress of gelation. Thus, intraerythrocytic shear may be an important factor in pathogenesis. Increasing shear decreases the delay time for gelation as measured directly and
