UNLABELLED: Pediatric rheumatologic diseases are complex conditions that can present with various clinical manifestations, including fever, rash, joint involvement, and diarrhea, impacting more than one organ system and affecting all pediatric age groups from 0 to 18 years. This review focuses on rheumatologic diseases in neonates, encompassing both primary neonatal-onset conditions and those influenced by maternal autoimmune diseases and treatments during pregnancy. Diagnosing rheumatologic diseases in neonates is challenging due to their nonspecific symptoms, which can overlap with other con

In the last decade, nailfold capillaroscopy is finding its way to the daily clinic of (pediatric) rheumatologist. This review will provide the necessary knowledge for the clinician performing this easy and non-invasive examination in children. In the first part, background information on type of capillaroscopy device and standardized (internationally validated) interpretations for the different capillary variables compared to healthy pediatric controls will be provided. The second part focusses on capillary changes that are observed in Raynaud's phenomenon with follow-up recommendations. This

Uveitis is defined as intraocular inflammation. It is an extraarticular manifestation of many forms of joint disease, which include spondyloarthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and Behçet's disease. Rheumatologists may be asked to consult on the ophthalmologic care of patients with uveitis in order to identify an associated systemic illness. Diagnoses such as spondyloarthritis, sarcoidosis, and interstitial nephritis with uveitis are frequently overlooked by referring ophthalmologists. Alternatively, rheumatologists may be asked to help manage the patient's immunosuppression, including bi

Multicentric carpotarsal osteolysis (MCTO) syndrome is a rare skeletal dysplasia associated with missense mutation in the MAFB gene, usually manifesting in young childhood, and showing variative phenotypic signs and course. The clinical manifestations of the syndrome include aggressive osteolysis predominantly of carpal and tarsal bones, progressive nephropathy, and mild craniofacial anomalies. The similarity between the initial clinical manifestations of MCTO and the symptoms of childhood inflammatory joint diseases makes a diagnosis very difficult, in the early stages of the disease in parti

Tetracyclines are broad-spectrum antibiotics that act at the ribosomal level. They were first introduced in 1948 and were widely prescribed by dermatologists in the early 1950s for treatment of acne. More recently, biologic actions of tetracyclines affecting inflammation, angiogenesis, and bone metabolism have been researched. The therapeutic effects of tetracycline and its analogues in rheumatic diseases have also been investigated. This article will review the rheumatological use of tetracycline and its analogues.

Burnout among rheumatologists is globally prevalent, driven by low personal accomplishment, younger age, dissatisfaction with the specialty, low income, long hours, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization. Mitigation strategies include addressing modifiable risk factors, implementing organizational measures, investing in well-being, assessing individual grit, and managing workload with virtual care platforms.

There is consensus around vitamin D in patients with osteoporosis: considerable data have shown that vitamin D may be favourable in the elderly because of a positive effect on bone health and muscle strength. However, in the field of rheumatology, there are still unresolved items: (i) low vitamin D levels are associated with higher disease activity in patients with inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis [RA], systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], spondyloarthritis [SpA], and psoriatic arthritis [PsA]) and (ii) vitamin D supplementation (2000 IU/d) seems to reduce the risk of new inflammato

Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) is a term that was originally used to describe a hyperinflammatory syndrome that developed in some patients with rheumatologic diseases. It is now clear that MAS and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) are defined by the same core pattern of clinical symptoms and share an underlying pathophysiology of impaired cytolytic activity and IFNγ-driven cytokine storm. Given that these disorders are highly related, lessons learned from the management of MAS can provide insights into effective approaches for HLH, particularly the strategy to employ anti-cytokine

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Rheumatologists' interest in arthroscopy began before the 1980s, when many era practitioners began to take up the procedure in earnest. Some of the important players in pre-World War II explorations of arthroscopy were rheumatologists, and the father of modern arthroscopy Makei Watanabe counted many rheumatologists among his postwar students, who were publishing about arthroscopic insights into rheumatic conditions in the 1960s and 1970s. We chose to review this evolution to demonstrate the diverging interests of rheumatologists and orthopedists in arthroscopy and emphasi

An endemic increase in the number of deaths attributable to prescribed opioids is found in all developed countries. In 2016 in the USA, more than 46 people died each day from overdoses involving prescription opioids. European data show that the number of patients receiving strong opioids is increasing. In addition, there is an upsurge in hospitalisations for opioid intoxication, opioid abuse and deaths in some European countries. This class of analgesic is increasingly used in many rheumatological pathologies. Cohort studies, in various chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) (osteoarthritis, chronic l

BACKGROUND: The international literature advocates for cancer screening in newly diagnosed patients with autoimmune myositis; however, there is no widely accepted consensus or guideline to outline the optimal cancer screening strategy and the evidence is currently insufficient to support any recommendation.
AIM: Our study aimed to establish the current trends in practice in malignancy screening in autoimmune myositis among Australian rheumatologists.
METHODS: All rheumatologists who were full members of the Australian Rheumatology Association in 2016 (386) were invited to complete an online

Four consultant rheumatologists from different health districts compared their out-patient and in-patient workloads for 3 months. Data collection proved simple and valuable to each local unit. Inflammatory joint disease (particularly severe rheumatoid arthritis) dominated the workload in all centres. Large differences in the number of new referrals with osteoarthritis, soft tissue diseases and polymyalgia rheumatica were observed. Differences were also apparent in the organization of clinics, provision of follow-up appointments for different diagnostic groups, and usage of steroid injections.

OBJECTIVE: Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) occurs in immunocompromised hosts, in both the presence and absence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, with substantial morbidity and a heightened mortality. We assessed practice patterns among rheumatologists for prescribing PCP prophylaxis.
METHODS: Invitations to an online international survey were e-mailed to 3150 consecutive members of the American College of Rheumatology.
RESULTS: Completed surveys were returned by 727 (23.1%) members. Among respondents, 505 (69.5%) reported prescribing prophylaxis. Factors associated with significa

OBJECTIVE: To determine current treatment practices for 11 selected pediatric rheumatic diseases.
METHODS: A questionnaire was mailed to 224 US and Canadian physicians who were listed in membership directories that included pediatric rheumatologists.
RESULTS: One hundred seventy-four questionnaires (78%) were returned. Board certified pediatricians accounted for 86% of respondents. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs were the most commonly used medicines for all forms of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), seronegative enthesopathy and arthropathy syndrome (SEA), and Henoch-Schönlein purpur

Globally widespread hepatitis E virus (HEV) is considered an emerging epidemiological threat, particularly dangerous for those with compromised immunity, including transplant recipients and patients with rheumatic diseases. The management of this infection involves many challenges, particularly in patients with rheumatic diseases. The aim of this review has been to provide a comprehensive, summary of the current knowledge, focusing on applicable for rheumatology practice. The review was conducted using Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases. Searched terms included hepatitis E virus, HEV
