Association between infant swimming and rhinovirus-induced wheezing.

AIM: Infant swimming has been considered as a risk factor for wheezing, but the role that respiratory viruses play is unclear. We explored the effects of infant swimming on the risk of all wheezing illnesses and wheezing associated with rhinoviruses. METHODS: We followed up a birth cohort of 1827 children until 17 months of age, collecting data on infant swimming, other risk factors and physician-diagnosed bronchiolitis or recurrent wheezing. Viral diagnostics were performed in a subset of children with all respiratory tract infections. RESULTS: Data on infant swimming were obtained for 1038

Rhinovirus-associated wheeze during infancy and asthma development.

Rhinovirus is commonly associated with bronchiolitis - only second to RSV during the first year life. The prevalence of HRV-bronchiolitis may be very high in predisposed infants. HRV diagnosis is almost exclusively based on PCR, which detects respiratory infections with or without symptoms. Two immunologic factors, interferon responses and atopy, have been associated with susceptibility to HRV-bronchiolitis in multiple studies. The current data supports the hypothesis that susceptibility to HRV-bronchiolitis is likely to be an early manifestation of biased immune responses, which are linked to

Biomarkers of viral and bacterial infection in rhinovirus pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Rhinovirus (RV) is often detected in children hospitalized with pneumonia, but the role of RV in causing pneumonia is still unclear. METHODS: White blood cell count, C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, and myxovirus resistance protein A (MxA) levels were determined from blood samples in children (n = 24) hospitalized with radiologically verified pneumonia. Respiratory viruses were identified from nasal swabs by using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays. Among RV-positive children, the cycle threshold value, RV subtyping by sequence analysis, and the clearance of

Rhinovirus Infections and Their Roles in Asthma: Etiology and Exacerbations.

Rhinovirus infections can cause wheezing illnesses in all age groups. In preschool children, rhinovirus infections frequently initiate acute wheezing illnesses. Children who wheeze with rhinoviruses are at increased risk to go on to develop asthma. Once asthma is established, rhinovirus infections are potent triggers for acute airway obstruction and exacerbations in children and adults. Paradoxically, for most individuals, rhinovirus infections commonly cause cold symptoms with little or no involvement of the lower airways. This paradox has led investigators to identify specific risk factors a

Efficacy of brompheniramine maleate for the treatment of rhinovirus colds.

We tested the efficacy of brompheniramine maleate in a large randomized, controlled trial of volunteers with experimental rhinovirus colds. Brompheniramine (12 mg) or placebo was administered at 8:00 A.M. and 8:00 P.M. for < or = 4 days after the onset of symptoms (24, 36, or 48 hours after virus challenge). During the first 3 days of treatment (the first 4 days after virus challenge), nasal secretion weights were lower for infected evaluable subjects receiving brompheniramine (n = 113) than for controls (day 1: 4.3 g vs. 6.8 g; day 2: 4.8 g vs. 7.7 g; and day 3: 3.3 g vs. 5.3 g) (P < or = .03

Experimental Antiviral Therapeutic Studies for Human Rhinovirus Infections.

Rhinovirus infection is common and usually causes mild, self-limiting upper respiratory tract symptoms. Rhinoviruses can cause exacerbation of chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, leading to a significant burden of morbidity and mortality. There has been a great deal of progress in efforts to understand the immunological basis of rhinovirus infection. However, despite a number of in vitro and in vivo attempts, there have been no effective treatments developed. This review article summarises the up to date virological and immunological understan

Rhinovirus illnesses during infancy predict subsequent childhood wheezing.

BACKGROUND: The contribution of viral respiratory infections during infancy to the development of subsequent wheezing and/or allergic diseases in early childhood is not established. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate these relationships prospectively from birth to 3 years of age in 285 children genetically at high risk for developing allergic respiratory diseases. METHODS: By using nasal lavage, the relationship of timing, severity, and etiology of viral respiratory infections during infancy to wheezing in the 3rd year of life was evaluated. In addition, genetic and environmental factors that could modi

Respiratory Symptoms and Health Outcomes of Rhinovirus and Influenza Virus Infections: Implications of Asthma, Diabetes Mellitus and Allergic Rhinitis in Rhinovirus C Infection.

Rhinovirus (RV), classified into RV-A, RV-B, and RV-C, is a prevalent cause of respiratory tract infections (RTIs). Here, we analysed RV infection and its clinical implications among outpatients with acute upper RTIs. Demographic data, baseline comorbidities, clinical symptoms, and health outcomes of RV-infected patients (n = 849) were compared with influenza (n = 417). Multivariable logistic regression was employed to evaluate predictors and health outcomes over a 1-year follow-up period. RV infections predominantly presented with cough, nasal discharge, and sore throat, whereas fever was mor

Clinical and molecular epidemiology of human rhinovirus C in children and adults in Hong Kong reveals a possible distinct human rhinovirus C subgroup.

BACKGROUND: A novel human rhinovirus (HRV) species, HRV-C, was recently discovered, but its clinical features and epidemiology, compared with HRV-A and HRV-B, remains poorly understood, especially in adults. METHODS: One thousand two hundred nasopharyngeal aspirate samples obtained from hospitalized children and adults during a 1-year period were subject to reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction to detect HRV. The clinical and molecular epidemiology of the 3 HRV species was analyzed. RESULTS: HRVs were detected in 178 (29.7%) of 600 nasopharyngeal aspirate samples from children and

Increased rhinovirus replication following corticosteroid and air pollution exposures.

Respiratory tract infections have been linked to air pollution exposure, and both are known exogenous risk factors of asthma exacerbations. The current frontline therapy used to minimize exacerbations are inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), but these medications increase the risk of respiratory tract infections in patients due to immunosuppressive side-effects. Virally-triggered exacerbations are most commonly associated with rhinovirus, and the ICS fluticasone propionate (FP) has been demonstrated to increase rhinovirus viral load by 2.5-fold in infected epithelial cells. We hypothesized that air

Microglia HMC3 cells are highly susceptible to Rhinovirus infection.

Human rhinovirus (HRV) affects the lower and upper respiratory tract, however, some studies suggest that HRV infection can lead to extrapulmonary complications in critical illness. Moreover, some reports have shown the presence of HRV in patients with Central Nervous System (CNS) disease. During a CNS infection, the microglia cells are the first line of defense against pathogens. In this study, the susceptibility of the human microglial clone 3 cell line (HMC3) to HRV infection was analyzed. Our findings demonstrate for the first time that HRV is capable of completing the entire viral cycle in

[Rhinovirus: Underestimated pathogens in patients during the neonatal period].

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, developments in virological tools have led to the easy detection of rhinoviruses and enteroviruses (E/RV). Their detection is very frequent in cases of airway involvement in children and their demonstrated causality. But the morbidity of E/RV in the neonatal period is unknown due to lack of epidemiological data. The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence and clinical characteristics of these infections in hospitalized neonates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the virology specimens of all neonates hospitalized at the Caen Univer

Rhinovirus bronchiolitis and recurrent wheezing: 1-year follow-up.

The association between bronchiolitis and recurrent wheezing remains controversial. In this prospective study, we assessed risk factors for recurrent wheezing during a 12-month follow-up in 313 infants aged <12 months hospitalised for their first episode of bronchiolitis. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were obtained with a questionnaire and from medical files. A total of 14 respiratory viruses were concurrently assayed in nasal washings. Parents were interviewed 12 months after hospitalisation to check whether their infants experienced recurrent wheezing. The rate of recurrent wheez

Analysis of tracheal secretions for rhinovirus during natural colds.

Rhinoviruses (RV) cause 50% of common colds and are frequently isolated from children and adults hospitalized for asthma exacerbations. Although colds may trigger severe coughing and wheezing, it is not known whether these symptoms are a result of lower airway infection with RV. Previous efforts to address this question by sampling lower airway secretions during experimental RV infections have been complicated by the possibility of contamination of the bronchoscope with nasopharyngeal cells and secretions. To further test the hypothesis that RV infections involve the lower airways, tracheal an

[Rhinovirus infections in hospitalized children: a 3-year study].

BACKGROUND: Rhinoviruses (RH) are responsible for acute respiratory illnesses, mainly in the upper respiratory tract. POPULATION AND METHODS: 3,152 children aged under 16 years, admitted to the Paediatrics department of the University Hospital Centre of Poitiers from January 1, 1993 to December 31, 1995 with ear, nose and throat (ENT) and/or respiratory symptoms were systematically investigated. One hundred and forty-five RH strains were isolated from nasopharyngeal secretions of 87 boys and 58 girls (mean age: 20.3 months). Among these, 92 (63.4%) were less than 1 year of age. Induced rhinovirus infection under controlled exposure to sulfur dioxide.

The interaction between short-term sulfur dioxide (SO2) exposure and experimentally induced rhinovirus infection was studied in thirty-two volunteers divided into two groups balanced with respect to age, antibody levels, and nasal mucus flow rates. One group was exposed to SO2 exposure at the threshold limit value (TLV) of 5 ppm during 4 hours; the other group served as controls exposed to pollution-free air under the same conditions. The SO2 exposure caused a 50% decrease in nasal mucus flow rate in the anterior parts of the nose, but there was no difference in the number of colds which devel

Age-Dependent Clinical and Molecular Rhinovirus Epidemiology, 2018-2023.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory viruses show different circulation patterns. While influenza and respiratory syncytial virus epidemiology is well documented, that of other respiratory viruses is less reported. METHODS: We studied respiratory virus epidemiology in southern France from 2018 to 2023, focusing on age-related rhinovirus (RV) epidemiology and molecular epidemiology of RVs circulating during 2022 and 2023 autumn peaks. RESULTS: RVs were the most frequently detected viruses. Apart from 2020, RVs exhibited 2 yearly waves, with a summer nadir. During the severe acute respiratory syndrome coro
