Identification of new sources of compounds with anticancer and antioxidant potential is essential for cancer treatment. Rhizospheric bacteria have emerged as a promising source of these agents. This study is aimed at investigating the anticancer and antioxidant properties of bacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of Lophocereus marginatus. Six rhizobacteria of L. marginatus were isolated and molecularly identified by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene and MALDI-TOF. We evaluated the inhibitory activity of methanol (MeOH) and ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extracts obtained from rhizobacteria against the muri

The Carajás plateaus in Brazil host endemic epilithic vegetation ("campo rupestre") on top of ironstone duricrusts, known as canga. This capping rock is primarily composed of iron(III) oxide minerals and forms a physically resistant horizon. Field observations reveal an intimate interaction between canga's surface and two native sedges (Rhynchospora barbata and Bulbostylis cangae). These observations suggest that certain plants contribute to the biogeochemical cycling of iron. Iron dissolution features at the root-rock interface were characterised using synchrotron-based techniques, Raman spec

Acid rain poses significant threats to crops and causes a decline in food production, but current monitoring and response to acid rain damage is either slow or expensive. The direct damage observation on plants can take several hours to days when the damage is irreversible. This study presents a real time bioelectrochemical monitoring approach that can detect acid rain damage within minutes. The rhizospheric bioelectrochemical sensor (RBS) takes advantage of the fast chain responses from leaves to roots, and then to the microbial electrochemical reactions in the rhizosphere. Immediate and repe

BACKGROUND: The natural interactions between plant roots and their rhizospheric microbiome are vital to plant fitness, modulating both growth promotion and disease suppression. In rice (Oryza sativa), a globally important food crop, as much as 30% of yields are lost due to blast disease caused by fungal pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae. Capitalizing on the abilities of naturally occurring rice soil bacteria to reduce M. oryzae infections could provide a sustainable solution to reduce the amount of crops lost to blast disease.
RESULTS: Naturally occurring root-associated rhizospheric bacteria were

Mupirocin (Mup) is a polyketide antibiotic for clinical methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus treatment and agricultural biocontrol, acting by binding to IleRS to inhibit protein synthesis. Here, we demonstrate that Pseudomonas viciae 11K1 acquires resistance to mupirocin not through canonical mutations in ileS, the gene encoding the drug target, but via single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of EmhR, a transcriptional repressor. These SNPs attenuate EmhR's DNA-binding ability, resulting in derepression of the resistance-nodulation-division (RND) efflux pump EmhABC. This leads to a 7-fol

Intercropping can improve tea soils and leaf quality, but partner-specific responses remain unclear. We compared four systems-Paris polyphylla-tea (CT), leguminous green manure-tea (LF), Pleurotus ostreatus-tea (CJ), and Polygonatum kingianum-tea (HJ)-with matched monoculture controls. Tea and soil traits were integrated with high-throughput sequencing, LEfSe, PICRUSt2 functional prediction, and correlation analyses. LF significantly increased soil available and total phosphorus, enriched the potentially beneficial fungi Mortierella and Trichoderma in the tea rhizosphere, and enhanced the pred

Root nitrogen acquisition is a central belowground process that determines how efficiently plants capture nitrogen from the rhizosphere and influences fertilizer demand and environmental nitrogen losses. Root N transporters, including nitrate, ammonium, amino acid, and peptide transporters, provide the molecular basis for inorganic and organic N uptake. However, root N acquisition is not determined solely by plant transport systems but is also shaped by rhizosphere microbial communities that regulate N mobilization, transformation, and availability. In addition to bacteria and archaea, saprotr

Drought stress threatens the ecological functions and economic value of grasses, posing a major challenge to their sustainable production. Plants co-evolve with rhizosphere microbial communities, sometimes described as the plant's second genome, that can contribute to drought adaptation. Drought alters root architecture, hormonal and redox regulation and belowground carbon allocation, thereby modifying the quantity and composition of root exudation and reshaping the rhizosphere environment. This review uses the rhizosphere dialogue as an integrative framework to link these plant responses with

Climbing plants, with their vigorous root systems, strong adaptability, large biomass, and wide range of uses, hold great potential in mine soil restoration. To explore the ecological restoration effects of different liana species, the Longtie mining area in Longmen County, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, China, was selected as the study site. Six liana species-Canavalia gladiata, Benincasa hispida, Pueraria montana, Mucuna pruriens, Ipomoea quamoclit, and Ormosia semicastrata were subjected to two treatments: fertilization and non-fertilization. The soil microbial diversity and community st

Ethylene modulates plant fitness, but its role in rhizosphere soil multifunctionality remains unclear. This study demonstrates that endogenous ethylene suppresses C- and N-cycling functions while promoting organic P mineralization in the maize rhizosphere, ultimately diminishing the overall soil multifunctionality and attenuating its phenologically driven peak at the tasseling stage. Ethylene reshaped microbial community assembly by enriching opportunistic taxa (e.g., Actinobacteria) while reducing the diversity and relative abundance of sensitive taxa. Community composition (e.g., Bacillus) a

Mangrove-derived actinomycetes are a rich reservoir of bioactive natural products, offering promising opportunities for new lead discovery. Seven new quinomycin-type octapeptides, designated quinomycin Q-U and triostin D-E, were isolated from the mangrove rhizosphere-derived Streptomyces sp. GXIMD 03507. The structures of compounds 1-7, including their absolute configurations were elucidated through a combination of chemical and spectroscopic analyses. The anti-proliferation activities of compounds 1-7 were evaluated against five tumor cell lines. None of the compounds (1-7) exhibited signific

Bacterial communities associated with medicinal plants are an essential part of ecosystems. The rhizosphere effect is rather important in the cultivation process. The purpose of the study was to analyze the rhizosphere effect of oregano (Origanum vulgare L.), peppermint (Mentha piperita L.), thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.), creeping thyme (Thymus serpillum L.) and sage (Salvia officinalis L.). To estimate the quantity of 16S bacteria ribosomal genes, qPCR assays were used. To compare bacterial communities' structure of medicinal plants rhizosphere with bulk soil high-throughput sequencing of the 16

BACKGROUND: The incidence of herbicide-resistant barnyardgrass is escalating in paddy fields, yet the interactions between resistant weeds and rice are largely unknown. The microbiota of herbicide-resistant barnyardgrass rhizosphere soil is critical for both barnyardgrass and rice fitness.
RESULTS: Rice has different biomass allocation and root traits in the presence of penoxsulam-resistant versus penoxsulam-susceptible barnyardgrass or in their conditioned soil. Compared to susceptible barnyardgrass, resistant barnyardgrass led to an allelopathic increase in rice root, shoot, and whole-plant

Rhizosphere effect of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) is crucial but little reported. Maize seeds were dressed with four nZVI concentrations (0, 1.0, 1.5, 2 g kg-1 ) and inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) (Funneliformis mosseae). The SEM images illuminated that excessive nZVI particles (2 g kg-1 ) were agglomerated on the surface of hyphae and spore, causing severe deformation and inactivation of AMF symbionts and thereafter inhibiting water uptake in maize seedlings. This restrained the scavenging effects of enzymatic (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase) and non-enzymatic com

INTRODUCTION: Amomum villosum (A. villosum) , a medicinal herb rich in bioactive metabolites (borneol, bornyl acetate), exhibits superior quality in its core production region Yangchun (YC). However, the key habitat factors influencing the quality of A. villosum, as well as the underlying mechanisms, remain unclear.
METHODS: This study employed an integrated multi-omics approach, incorporating metabolomics, transcriptomics, soil physicochemical property analysis, and metagenomics, to systematically compare the core production region with non-core regions. By identifying potential factors infl

Soil protists - a phylogenetically diverse group of unicellular eukaryotes, encompassing bacterivorous flagellates, predatory amoebae, fungivorous vampyrellids, and parasitic plasmodiophorids - exist at densities ranging from 10⁴ to 10⁸ cells per gram of soil, yet are systematically underrepresented in microbiome research compared to bacteria and fungi. This review presents soil protists as active regulators of microbial community structure, nutrient biogeochemistry, and functional ecosystem resilience, rather than just passive dwellers of the soil. Three interconnected mechanistic aspects are

Although the potential of microbial inoculants for sustainable agriculture and environmental restoration has been widely recognized, their field performance remains highly variable and often unpredictable. Current research and development frameworks for microbial inoculants primarily focus on their plant growth-promoting functions and metabolic traits, often overlooking the ecological processes that determine whether introduced strains can successfully disperse, access, and establish within the rhizosphere. Increasing evidence suggests that successful dispersal and establishment cannot be assu

Compositional variation in rhizosphere communities among plant species is ubiquitous and fundamental in maintaining both soil and plant biodiversity. However, the magnitude and direction of environmental effects on this variation remain unquantified in complex natural settings. Here, by integrating a large-scale field survey and a complementary glasshouse experiment with 54 plant species, we disentangled the effects of environmental variation from intrinsic plant effects on rhizosphere fungal composition. Field environments can either amplify or reduce compositional variation in rhizosphere fu

AIM: The bioinoculant properties of a newly identified ammonium-releasing novel strain of Actinomycetota-Microbacterium bengalense sp. nov. GB16_1_BI (Accession number: SRX9280401) on the microbiome structure of rice rhizosphere were assessed.
METHODS AND RESULT: GB16_1_BI may inhibit most bacteria present in the rice rhizosphere as well as encouraged the growth of rare bacteria specific to the waterlogged rice rhizosphere. The genome sequence as well as untargeted metabolome analyses of GB16_1_BI showed abundance of secondary metabolites with probable antimicrobial activity. Amplicon sequenc
