In radiobiology and radiation oncology fields, the observation of a phenomenon called radiation-induced bystander effect (RIBE) has introduced the prospect of remotely located tissues' affection. This phenomenon has been broadly developed to involve the concept of RIBE, which are relevant to the radiation-induced response of a distant tissue other than the irradiated one. The current study aimed at investigating each of the RIBE of cranial irradiation on oxidative and inflammatory status in different organs such as liver, kidney, heart, lung, and spleen. Being a vital target of the cholinergic

The combined application of furazolidone and vancomycin has previously been shown to be synergistic against Gram-negative pathogens, with great therapeutic promise. However, the emergence and mechanism of resistance to this antibiotic combination have not been characterized. To fill this gap, we here selected Escherichia coli progeny for growth on the furazolidone-vancomycin combination at the concentration where the parent was sensitive. We show that selected clones were associated with increased resistance to neither, only one drug, or both furazolidone and vancomycin, but in all cases were

The phylogenetic relationships of all seven known species of Cecidophyopsis mites (Acari: Eriophyidae) with Ribes hosts have been inferred from ribosomal DNA sequences. This analysis found groups of closely related mites. The five gall-forming species, four of which are monophagous and one which has two hosts, were found in two groups. Another group consisted of the two non gall-forming species, one of which has two hosts, while the other is monophagous. The molecular phylogeny of their known Ribes host plants was calculated using the equivalent ribosomal regions as the mites. The structure of

BACKGROUND: The radiation-induced "bystander effect" (RIBE) was shown to occur in a number of experimental systems both in vitro and in vivo as a result of exposure to ionizing radiation (IR). RIBE manifests itself by intercellular communication from irradiated cells to non-irradiated cells which may cause DNA damage and eventual death in these bystander cells. It is known that human stem cells (hSC) are ultimately involved in numerous crucial biological processes such as embryologic development; maintenance of normal homeostasis; aging; and aging-related pathologies such as cancerogenesis and

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced bystander effects (RIBE) is the radiobiological effects detected in nonirradiated cells that have received signals from neighboring irradiated cells. In some studies, there are observations that RIBE unexpectedly reduces at high doses. In this study, the expression of two selected apoptotic and repair genes and their possible role in the formation of this unexpected reduction is examined.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The QU-DB cells were irradiated with gamma rays of a60 Co teletherapy unit at doses of 2, 4, 6, and 8 Gy. One hour following irradiation, their culture

Although radioadaptive responses (RAR) and radiation-induced bystander effects (RIBE) are two important biological effects of low-dose radiation, there are currently only limited data that directly address their interaction, particularly in the context of whole organisms. In previous studies, we separately demonstrated RAR and RIBE using an in vivo system of C. elegans . In the current study, we further investigated their interaction in C. elegans , with the ratio of protruding vulva as the biological end point for RAR. Fourteen-hour-old worms were first locally targeted with a proton microbea

Infectious diarrhoea is a serious threat to farm animals, especially newborns. This study aimed to investigate in vitro selective growth-inhibitory effects of 15 Indian ethnoveterinary plant ethanolic extracts, 5 antibiotic growth promoters, 5 antibiotics, 15 phytochemicals and their synthetic analogues against 12 diarrhoea-associated and 12 probiotic bacteria of veterinary concern. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC≥ 80) of crude extracts and chemicals were determined by the broth microdilution method and log value of the ratio of selective indices (SI) were calculated. Among the tested a

With the deepening of internationalization, the population's mobility has greatly increased, which can impact people's intergroup relationships. The current research examined the hypothesis that residential mobility plays a crucial role in racial in-group bias in empathy (RIBE) with three studies. By manipulating the residential mobility/stability mindset and measuring subjective pain intensity ratings (Study 1) and event-related potentials (ERPs, Study 2) of Chinese adults on painful and neutral expressions of Asian and Caucasian faces, we found that the RIBE in subjective ratings and N1 ampl

PURPOSE: The radiation-induced bystander effect (RIBE) refers to biological responses in non-irradiated cells exposed to signals from irradiated cells and may contribute to tumor control during radiotherapy. Periodic dose heterogeneity caused by the thread effect of helical tomotherapy (TOMO) may favor RIBE, but the underlying intercellular mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated exosome-mediated bystander responses and their molecular and clinical relevance in cervical cancer.
METHODS: Thread effect and uniform TOMO irradiation plans were established, and their effects on cervical

Radiotherapy (RT), administered to roughly half of all cancer patients, occupies a crucial role in the landscape of cancer treatment. However, expanding the clinical indications of RT remains challenging. Inspired by the radiation-induced bystander effect (RIBE), we used the mediators of RIBE to mimic RT. Specifically, we discovered that irradiated tumor cell-released microparticles (RT-MPs) mediated the RIBE and had immune activation effects. To further boost the immune activation effect of RT-MPs to achieve cancer remission, even in advanced stages, we engineered RT-MPs with different cytoki

BACKGROUND: Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic that demonstrates good efficacy in the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), especially those caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). However, recent reports about the emergence of nitrofurantoin resistance in UPEC are concerning. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of nitrofurantoin-resistant UPEC isolates and their characteristics.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 235 UPEC isolates collected from Ahvaz, Iran were investigated for resistance to nitrofurantoin. To evaluate the mechanism of this

Although direct damage to nuclear DNA is considered as the major contributing event that leads to radiation-induced effects, accumulating evidence in the past two decades has shown that non-target events, in which cells are not directly irradiated but receive signals from the irradiated cells, or cells irradiated at extranuclear targets, may also contribute to the biological consequences of exposure to ionizing radiation. With a beam diameter at the micrometer or sub-micrometer level, microbeams can precisely deliver radiation, without damaging the surrounding area, or deposit the radiation en

Shigella spp. are the major cause of bacillary dysentery worldwide. The pathogenic process involves bacterial invasion and lysis of the phagocytic vacuole, followed by replication and movement within the cell cytoplasm and, ultimately, spread directly into adjacent cells. This study demonstrates that S. flexneri cytochrome bd expression is necessary for normal intracellular survival and virulence. Cytochrome bd is one of two terminal oxidases in the bacterial respiratory chain that reduce molecular oxygen to water, utilizing intermediates shuttled through the electron transport chain. S. flexn

Millions of people worldwide have sickened and died from tuberculosis in recent centuries. Yet for most of human existence, the impact of tuberculosis on society is largely unknown. It is, indeed, unknowable without methods suitable for estimating disease prevalence in skeletal samples. Here such a procedure is applied to medieval and early modern Danish skeletons, and it shows how disease prevalence varied with differences in socioeconomic conditions. The approach is based on sensitivity and specificity estimates from modern skeletons. To augment our understanding of tuberculosis in Danish hi

Hypertension is a becoming a major threat to the world. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) is a key part in the renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS) which control blood pressure. Over expression of RAAS is related with vascular hypertension, ACE inhibition has turned into a noteworthy target for controlling hypertension. In the search of lead molecules from plant origin as a substitute for toxic synthetic drugs, 25 Indian medicinal plants and foods were screened for their ACE inhibitory activity. IC50 (50% inhibition of ACE) values of hydroalcoholic crude extracts and fraction were det

Radiation-induced bystander effect (RIBE) contributes to oxidative and nitrosative stress in non-irradiated tissues following ionizing radiation (IR). This study investigated the protective effects of propolis and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) against RIBE-mediated renal injury after total cranial irradiation in rats. Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to six groups: IR, IR + propolis, IR + CAPE, propolis control, CAPE control, and sham. A single 5 Gy cranial gamma irradiation was administered. Propolis (80 mg/kg/day, orally) and CAPE (10 μmol/kg/day, intraperitoneally) w
