Prospective, randomized trial of hypertonic sodium lactate versus lactated Ringer's solution for burn shock resuscitation.

We prospectively randomized 51 adult burned patients on admission to study fluid, electrolyte, and physiologic parameters during burn resuscitation with the use of hypertonic saline (HSL, Na 250 mEq/L, 514 mOsm) or lactated Ringer's solution (LR, Na 130 mEq/L, 268 mOsm). Patients suffered at least 20% total body surface area burns (BSA); the mean BSA injury was 36.7% BSA, with a range of 20 to 74% BSA. All patients were admitted to our Burn Center within at least 12 hours of injury. Laboratory studies included frequent determinations of serum chemistries including osmolalities, and continuous

The dynamics of vascular volume and fluid shifts of lactated Ringer's solution and hypertonic-saline-dextran solutions infused in normovolemic sheep.

UNLABELLED: Infusions of hyperosmotic-hyperoncotic solutions such as hypertonic saline dextran (HSD) are used in Europe for resuscitation of traumatic shock and perioperative volume support as an adjunct to conventional isotonic crystalloids. Whereas plasma volume expansion of HSD has been measured at single time points after the intravascular volume expansion, the detailed time course of fluid shifts during and after infusions have not been reported. We compared the time course of volume expansion during and after 30-min infusions of 4 mL/kg HSD and 25 mL/kg lactated Ringer's solution (LR) in

Evidence for myocardial defects under extreme acute normovolemic hemodilution with hydroxyethyl starch and lactated ringer's solution.

Acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) has been proposed to avoid the risks of allogenic transfusion. In reference to its cellular effects, ANH reports in the literature are scarce. Using electron microscopy (EM), we evaluated the effects of ANH on cardiac function and myocardial structure. Twenty-five dogs were prospectively randomized to a control group (n = 5) or to undergo ANH with 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES; n = 10) or lactated Ringer's solution (LR; n = 10) administered, respectively, at a ratio of 1:1 or 1:3 to the volume of blood removed. Animals were gradually hemodiluted to a hematoc

Prevention of hypotension after spinal anesthesia for cesarean section: six percent hetastarch versus lactated Ringer's solution.

This study was designed to determine whether preoperative administration of 6% hetastarch decreases the incidence and severity of hypotension after spinal anesthesia for cesarean section. Forty nonlaboring ASA class I and II women having nonurgent cesarean sections were randomized to receive either 500 mL of 6% hetastarch plus 1 L lactated Ringer's solution (LR) (n = 20), or 2 L of LR (n = 20) prior to induction of spinal anesthesia. Hypotension occurred in 45% of patients who received hetastarch vs 85% of those who received only LR (P < 0.05), and minimum systolic blood pressure was lower in

Plasma exchange with plasma protein fraction and lactated Ringer's solution using the continuous flow cell separator.

Ten patients underwent 50-70 percent plasma exchanges using the continuous flow cell separator. The exchange material consisted of Plasma Protein Fraction (PPF) and Lactated Ringer's Solution (LRS) instead of fresh frozen, modified or lyophilized plasma. No bleeding or other complications were encountered. The coagulation factor activity after exchange was above that required for hemostasis. The procedure is safe, expeditious and efficient.

Tailored Hydration With Lactated Ringer's Solution for Postendoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography Pancreatitis Prevention: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive hydration using lactated Ringer's solution prevents postendoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) pancreatitis (PEP). Concerns of this strategy are large volume and lengthy hydration. Our study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of tailored aggressive hydration (TAH) for PEP prevention. METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter, double-blinded, randomized trial conducted across 3 tertiary Korean hospitals, patients who underwent ERCP for the first time were randomly assigned (1:1) to the tailored standard hydration (TSH) and TAH groups. The TSH group received

A single intraperitoneal dose of carbon monoxide-saturated ringer's lactate solution ameliorates postoperative ileus in mice.

Treatment with inhaled carbon monoxide (CO) has been shown to ameliorate bowel dysmotility caused by surgical manipulation of the gut in experimental animals. We hypothesized that administration of CO dissolved in lactated Ringer's solution (CO-LR) might provide similar protection to that observed with the inhaled gas while obviating some of its inherent problems. Postoperative gut dysmotility (ileus) was induced in mice by surgical manipulation of the small intestine. Some mice were treated with a single intraperitoneal dose of CO-LR immediately after the surgical procedure, whereas other mic

Lactated Ringer's solution versus 3% albumin for resuscitation of a lethal intestinal ischemic shock in rats.

Previously, we determined that a colloid concentration of about 3% was optimal for resuscitation of lethal ischemic intestinal shock model in rats. Maximal volumes of lactated Ringer's solution (RL) alone only expanded plasma volume (PV) to 80% of preshock level, while increasing volumes of 3% albumin (ALB) in RL linearly expanded PV up to twice the preshock level. This study compares the effect of RL and ALB on survival and PV in 175 rats. The solutions were given in volumes to induce suboptimal PV expansion, requiring 10 and 44 ml/100 g body weight (bwt) of ALB and RL, respectively. ALB (20

Effects of an intravenous infusion of Ringer's solution on eruption rates of incisor teeth in anesthetized rats.

OBJECTIVE: The vasculature within the socket is reportedly involved in determining the position of continuously erupting teeth. Thus, loss of body fluid in anesthetized rats, which would affect the vascular physiology, should influence tooth movement. We investigated the effects of an infusion of Ringer's solution on the systemic arterial blood pressure, regional blood flow at the base of the incisor, and axial tooth movement in anesthetized rats to determine the cause of tooth displacement. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the experimental group, the animals received intravenous infusions of Ringer'

A comparison of renal function following the infusion of Ringer solution into systemic and portal veins in the dog.

The increase of sodium and water excretion by the kidney following intravenous Ringer solution infused into a femoral vein (vena femoralis) or into an intestinal vein (vena portae ) has been studied in anaesthetized dogs. The functional parameters of renal function have been compared during volume expansion with 1.5-2.0% of body weight Ringer solution and "over-hydration" by 2.5% Ringer loading over 60 minutes. No significant difference in sodium excretion and urine output resulted from 0.25 ml/kg/min Ringer solution when infused by the two routes. When the animals were infused with 2.5% body

Normal saline versus Ringer's solution and critical-illness mortality in acute pancreatitis: a nationwide inpatient database study.

BACKGROUND: Fluid resuscitation is fundamental in acute pancreatitis (AP) treatment. However, the optimal choice between normal saline (NS) and Ringer's solution (RS), and its impact on mortality in critically ill patients, remains controversial. This retrospective cohort study, utilizing a national Japanese inpatient database, investigates this question. METHODS: Using the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination database between July 2010 and March 2021, we identified adult patients hospitalized in intensive care units (ICU) or high-dependency care units (HDU) for AP who survived at least t

Ringer's malate solution protects against the multiple organ injury and dysfunction caused by hemorrhagic shock in rats.

Malic acid, in the form of its anion malate, is a key intermediate in the major biochemical energy-producing cycle known as the citric acid or Krebs cycle. In this study, the authors investigated the protective effect of a novel crystalloid solution of Ringer's malate following fluid resuscitation of hemorrhagic shock using a rat model. Under general anesthesia, Sprague-Dawley male rats were subjected to 60 min of hemorrhagic shock (40 mmHg for 60 min) followed by crystalloid resuscitation. Groups were as follows: (1) sham shock, (2) normal saline, (3) Ringer's lactate, and (4) Ringer's malate
