Environmental control and adrenergic regulation of pineal activity in the diurnal tropical rodent, Arvicanthis ansorgei.

Like nocturnal rodents, the diurnal tropical rodent Arvicanthis ansorgei shows a daily rhythm in pineal melatonin content. Seasonal and photoperiodic variations in the biosynthetic activity of the pineal gland: arylalkylamine-N-acetyltransferase (AA-NAT), hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) activities and melatonin content were measured in male and female A. ansorgei captured near Samaya, Mali, and kept either under artificial laboratory photoperiods [light-dark (LD) cycles: LD 14:10, LD 12:12 or LD 10:14 or caught in the field in Mali and killed at four different times of the year (Janu

Systemic Control of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Sand-Fly Vectors: Fipronil-Treated Rodent Bait Is Effective in Reducing Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae) Female Emergence Rate From Rodent Burrows.

The strong dependency of some vectors on their host as a source of habitat can be viewed as a weak link in pathogen's transmission cycles using the vertebrate host as a 'Trojan horse' to deliver insecticides directly to the vector-host point of contact (hereafter 'systemic control'). This could, simultaneously, affect the survival of blood-feeding females and coprophagic larvae. Sand-flies, vectors of leishmaniasis worldwide, are often dependent on their bloodmeal host as a source of habitat and may therefore be good candidates for systemic control. In the present study, we field-tested this m

Sexual dimorphic vulnerability of respiratory control in a neonatal rodent model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) has been linked to numerous poor neurological outcomes as well as impairments in respiratory neural control. Females are known to metabolize ethanol (EtOH) differently than males suggesting a sexual dimorphic sensitivity to EtOH exposure. We used a rodent model of FASD to investigate whether EtOH disrupts respiratory neural control. Rat pups received a single intraperitoneal injection of 2 different doses (0.8 mg/g or 4.4 mg/g) of EtOH. Whole-body plethysmography was used ∼24 h later to assess ventilatory responses to acute hypoxia (HVR) and hypercapnia (

Gel Carriers for Plant Extracts and Synthetic Pesticides in Rodent and Arthropod Pest Control: An Overview.

Insecticides and rodenticides form the basis of integrated pest management systems worldwide. As pest resistance continues to increase and entire groups of chemical active ingredients are restricted or banned, manufacturers are looking for new options for more effective formulations and safer application methods for the remaining pesticide ingredients. In addition to new technological adaptations of mainstream formulations in the form of sprays, fumigants, and dusts, the use of gel formulations is becoming increasingly explored and employed. This article summarizes information on the current a

Evaluation of juvenile hormone analogues as rodent feed-through insecticides for control of immature phlebotomine sandflies.

The juvenile hormone analogues methoprene and pyriproxyfen were evaluated as rodent feed-through insecticides for control of immature stages of the sandfly Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli (Diptera: Psychodidae). The development and survival of P. papatasi second-instar larvae fed faeces from Syrian hamsters, Mesocricetus auratus, that had been fed a diet containing methoprene (0, 9.788, 97.88 or 978.8 p.p.m.) or pyriproxyfen (0, 9.82, 98.2 or 982 p.p.m.) were evaluated. The faeces of methoprene-treated hamsters greatly reduced the percentage of larvae that pupated at all concentrations tested and

Control of glutamate release by calcium channels and kappa-opioid receptors in rodent and primate striatum.

The modulation of depolarization (4-aminopyridine, 2 mM)-evoked endogenous glutamate release by kappa-opioid receptor activation and blockade of voltage-dependent Ca2+ -channels has been investigated in synaptosomes prepared from rat and marmoset striatum. 4-Aminopyridine (4-AP)-stimulated, Ca2+ -dependent glutamate release was inhibited by enadoline, a selective kappa-opioid receptor agonist, in a concentration-dependent and norbinaltorphimine (nor-BNI, selective kappa-opioid receptor antagonist)-sensitive manner in rat (IC50 = 4.4+/-0.4 microM) and marmoset (IC50 = 2.9+/-0.7 microM) striatal

Immunoreactive erythropoietin in rodent submaxillary gland. Autonomic control of exocrine secretion and factors influencing its concentration.

The SMG of mice and rats contain a heterologous group of biologically active factors. Some are well known, can be obtained at high purity and are well-characterized. There is strong evidence for the presence of others although they have not been purified. Finally, some of them are questionable and/or have not yet been characterized. EPO would be one of the factors whose presence in the SMG is strongly suspected, although its biological activity has not been demonstrated yet. Its presence in the gland, therefore, is only supported by radioimmunoassay data and immunocytochemical methods. Immunor

The combined effect of bromadiolone and ivermectin (iBr) in controlling both rodents and their fleas.

Rodent pests not only cause severe agricultural loss but also spread zoonotic pathogens to human beings. Anticoagulant rodenticides are widely used to decrease the population densities of rodents but often lead to the spillover of ectoparasites because fleas and ticks may gather on surviving rodents. Therefore, it is necessary to kill fleas and ticks before culling rodents to minimize the risk of pathogen transmission. In this study, we used a mixture of ivermectin (an antiparasitic drug) and bromadiolone (an anticoagulant rodenticide) to control both rodent and flea/tick abundances. We found

Identification and Control of an Ornithonyssus Bacoti Infestation in a Rodent Vivarium by Using Molecular Diagnostic Techniques.

Ornithonyssus bacoti, commonly known as the tropical rat mite, is a zoonotic ectoparasite that occasionally infests research rodent colonies. Most infestations have been attributed to wild rodents that harbor the mite and spread it to research animals, often during building construction or other activity that disrupts wild rodent populations. Although infestation may be clinically silent, severe outbreaks have been reported to cause pruritis, dermatitis, decreased reproductive performance, and anemia in rodents. In mid-2020, our institution experienced increased activity of wild mice, which we

Moderate prenatal alcohol exposure impairs cognitive control, but not attention, on a rodent touchscreen continuous performance task.

A common feature associated with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders is the inability to concentrate on a specific task while ignoring distractions. Human continuous performance tasks (CPT), measure vigilance and cognitive control simultaneously while these processes are traditionally measured separately in rodents. We recently established a touchscreen 5-choice CPT (5C-CPT) that measures vigilance and cognitive control simultaneously by incorporating both target and nontargets and showed it was sensitive to amphetamine-induced improvement in humans and mice. Here, we examined the effects of mode

Rodent Aanat: intronic E-box sequences control tissue specificity but not rhythmic expression in the pineal gland.

Arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (Aanat) is the penultimate enzyme in the serotonin-N-acetylserotonin-melatonin pathway. It is nearly exclusively expressed in the pineal gland and the retina. A marked rhythm of Aanat gene expression in the rat pineal is mediated by cyclic AMP response elements located in the promoter and first intron. Intron 1 also contains E-box elements, which mediate circadian gene expression in other cells. Here we examined whether these elements contribute to rhythmic Aanat expression in the pineal gland. This was done using transgenic rats carrying Aanat transgenes wit

Widely spaced alternative promoters, conserved between human and rodent, control expression of the Opitz syndrome gene MID1.

Mutations in the gene MID1 are responsible for the X-linked form of Opitz syndrome, a genetic disorder that primarily affects the development of midline structures. Several mRNA isoforms with variant 5' ends have been reported for MID1, suggesting the presence of alternative transcription initiation sites. However, the genomic organization and expression pattern of the heterogeneous MID1 5'-untranslated regions (UTRs), as well as the promoter regions regulating their transcription, have not been determined. We now report the characterization of alternative MID1 first exons and their associated

Allele-specific control of rodent and human lncRNA KMT2E-AS1 promotes hypoxic endothelial pathology in pulmonary hypertension.

Hypoxic reprogramming of vasculature relies on genetic, epigenetic, and metabolic circuitry, but the control points are unknown. Randomized Controlled Preclinical Trial of a Benzodiazepine-Dihydropyridine Hybrid Molecule in Rodent Stroke.

BACKGROUND: The 3-ethoxycarbonyl-2-methyl-4-(2-nitrophenyl)-4,11-dihydro-1H-pyrido[2,3-b][1,5]benzodiazepine (JM-20) molecule is a novel multifunctional molecule with potent neuroprotective effects in rat focal cerebral ischemia. To confirm previous results obtained in single laboratories with small sample sizes, and to provide a robust preclinical evidence base for potential clinical development in stroke, we performed a 2-center preclinical trial with sufficiently large group sizes to detect relevant effects, minimizing biases in experimental design as much as possible (randomization, blindi

Controlling litter effects to enhance rigor and reproducibility with rodent models of neurodevelopmental disorders.

Research with rodents is crucial for expanding our understanding of genetic and environmental risk factors for neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). However, there is growing concern about the number of animal studies that are difficult to replicate, potentially undermining the validity of results. These concerns have prompted funding agencies and academic journals to implement more rigorous standards in an effort to increase reproducibility in research. However, these standards fail to address a major source of variability in rodent research brought on by the "litter effect," the fact that rode

[Strategies for sustainable management of commensal rodents. Definitions of control objectives at communal level].

The German Act on the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases in Man (Infektionsschutzgesetz, IfSG) provides a legal framework for activities and responsibilities concerning communal rodent control. However, actual governance of communal rodent control is relatively heterogeneous, as federal states (Bundesländer) have different or even no regulations for prevention and management of commensal rodent infestations (e.g. brown rats, roof rats and house mice). Control targets and control requirements are rarely precisely defined and often do not go beyond general measures and objectives. Alt

ATF4 inhibits TRPV4 function and controls itch perception in rodents and nonhuman primates.

Acute and chronic itch are prevalent and incapacitating, yet the neural mechanisms underlying both acute and chronic itch are just starting to be unraveled. Activated transcription factor 4 (ATF4) belongs to the ATF/CREB transcription factor family and primarily participates in the regulation of gene transcription. Our previous study has demonstrated that ATF4 is expressed in sensory neurons. Nevertheless, the role of ATF4 in itch sensation remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that ATF4 plays a significant role in regulating itch sensation. The absence of ATF4 in dorsal root ganglio

Assessment of Corticospinal Excitability in Awake Rodents Using EMG-Controlled Intracortical Stimulation.

Assessment of corticospinal excitability (CSE) is an essential component of experiments designed to induce or study neuronal plasticity in the motor system. Common examples are paired associative stimulation (PAS), theta-burst stimulation (TBS), intensive motor training, or any methods aimed at potentiating the corticomotor system in the hope of promoting better recovery after neurological insult. To date, rodent models of CSE assessment have mostly been completed under anaesthesia, which greatly affects the level of CSE, as well as the mechanisms of plasticity. Experiments in awake animals ar

A magnetoelastic bone fixation device for controlled mechanical stimulation at femoral fractures in rodents.

Studies have shown that mechanical stimulations can provide anabolic bone formation and counteract conditions such as osteoporosis in intact bones, as well as promote healing of bone fractures. However, many of these studies are based on external mechanical loading platforms or bulky wearable force loading systems, which are inconvenient and impractical in clinical settings especially for the treatment of bone injuries. To overcome this limitation, a bone fixation device was developed to provide localized mechanical strains across a bone fracture site. The fixation device, designed for a roden
