Renal transplantation in the Roma ethnicity-do all patients have equal chance for transplantation?

Racial and ethnic disparities exist in access to kidney transplantation worldwide. The Roma people are often socially deprived, uneducated, and unemployed. We investigated all dialysis centers in Croatia to determine number of Roma people on dialysis as well as their access and reasons for eventual failure to enter the waiting list. There are 9463 registered Roma people in Croatia, however, the estimated number reaches 40,000. Twenty-five Roma patients required renal replacement therapy, giving a prevalence of 830 per million people (pmp), compared with 959 pmp among the general population. Av

Roma Women's Role in the Health Preservation of Their Communities during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The scientific literature has evidenced the stereotypes that affect the Roma people, which are detrimental to their access to the health systems in various countries. With the COVID-19 pandemic, this situation has been aggravated by falsely blaming, on many occasions, the Roma people as spreaders of the virus for supposedly not complying with the norms established by the health authorities. However, it has not been explored in depth what actions have been carried out by the Roma people during the pandemic to cope with this aspect. The aim of this article is to learn about the leadership of Rom

Doubling Syndemics: Ethnographic Accounts of the Health Situation of Homeless Romanian Roma in Copenhagen.

This study investigates health concerns and access to health services for Roma from Romania who live in homelessness in Copenhagen, Denmark. They collect refundable bottles and call themselves "badocari," which in Romanian refers to "people who work with bottles." Homeless Roma in Denmark have not previously been studied through ethnographic research. The study stresses the importance of a syndemic approach towards understanding badocari health concerns. Syndemics is understood as co-occurring diseases, which unfold within contexts of social injustice. The case of the badocari is argued to be

Syndrome of polydactyly, cleft lip/palate or lingual lump, and psychomotor retardation in endogamic gypsies.

Six children in an inbred isolate (a gypsy colony) were found to have a syndrome of reduplication of the big toes, supernumerary fingers on the hands, cleft lip/palate or lingual nodule, and somatic and psychomotor retardation. Other features sometimes present were absence of olfactory bulbs and tracts, cryptorchidism, inguinal hernia, and congenital heart disease. The disorder has overlapping features with several previously delineated syndromes, but is most similar to the anomalies of trisomy 13 Mand ohr's syndrome. Our patients had a normal karyotype. Mutations, Genes, and Phenotypes Related to Movement Disorders and Ataxias.

Our clinical series comprises 124 patients with movement disorders (MDs) and/or ataxia with cerebellar atrophy (CA), many of them showing signs of neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA). Ten NBIA genes are accepted, although isolated cases compatible with abnormal brain iron deposits are known. The patients were evaluated using standardised clinical assessments of ataxia and MDs. First, NBIA genes were analysed by Sanger sequencing and 59 patients achieved a diagnosis, including the detection of the founder mutation PANK2 p.T528M in Romani people. Then, we used a custom panel Mo

Population-Specific Mutational Spectrum of Autosomal Recessive Nonsyndromic Hearing Loss in Croatian Roma: Implications for Clinical Genetics.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Hearing impairment is a highly prevalent sensory disorder resulting from a variety of causes. A high proportion of autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing impairment is linked to the GJB2 (OMIM 121011) gene which encodes for a gap junction protein, connexin-26. Alterations of genes that encode for connexins can lead to changes in cell ion content and cause hearing impairment. METHODS: GJB2 gene polymorphisms (c.71G>A, p.Trp24*rs104894396; c.457G>A, p.Val153Ile, rs111033186; c.380G>A, p.Arg127His, rs111033196; c.109G>A, p.Val37Ile, rs72474224; and c.269T>C, p.Leu90Pro,

Novel ANO5 intronic Roma variant alters splicing causing muscular dystrophy.

The pathogenic role of intronic variants is generally difficult to assess, except for those near known splice sites for which aberrant splicing is suspected, although deeper intronic variants can also alter splicing. We have identified a novel (NM_213599.2:c.1180+6T>C) ANO5 variant that causes the exclusion of exon 12. The mutation, identified in a Roma individual, has an estimated carrier rate of 1.68% among the Iberian Roma population, this being the first ANO5 pathogenic variant communicated in this ethnic group. In this study, we have also characterized the ANO5 splice forms expressed in h

Traveller Gypsies and childhood immunization: a study in east London.

The immunization status of the children of Traveller Gypsies presenting to two general practices and a paediatric accident and emergency department in east London between July 1988 and February 1990 was compared with that of a control group presenting to the same services. Study of parental reports and other records for 72 Traveller Gypsy children and 106 control children aged 10 months to six years revealed that Traveller Gypsy children had significantly lower completion rates for pertussis, measles, diphtheria/tetanus and poliomyelitis vaccines than the control group. The difference between

Genetic ancestry and monogenic disease risk in the Scottish Traveller founder population.

The Scottish Travellers are a traditionally nomadic community in Scotland that has historically been marginalised, and remained socially isolated from the settled Scottish population until recently. Little, however, is known about their genetic origins, population structure and risks of Mendelian disease. After an approach from the community to address this gap and increase representation, we analyzed array genotypes and whole-exome sequencing data from up to 125 Gypsy/Traveller individuals, alongside settled British and Irish references. We demonstrate that Scottish Travellers are genetically

Intestinal parasitic infections in children from marginalised Roma communities: prevalence and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections remain a significant global health issue, particularly affecting poor and marginalised populations. These infections significantly contribute to children's diseases, malnutrition, poor school performance, cognitive disorders, and future economic losses. This study aimed to explore and compare the occurrence of intestinal parasites in early childhood among the group of infants from the Slovak majority population and from marginalised Roma communities (MRCs). Furthermore, it aimed to explore the health complaints of children with and without intestinal
