This study evaluated the shaping ability of HyFlex EDM and Rotate rotary systems in the preparation of S-Shaped mesial root canals of mandibular molars (n = 13). After root canal preparation with instruments HyFlex EDM and Rotate 0.25 and 0.40, the specimens were evaluated for root canal volume, volume increase, static voxels, accumulated hard tissue debris, centring ability and canal transportation. After 0.40 preparation, the Rotate group exhibited a greater increase in volume and less accumulated hard-tissue debris compared to the HyFlex group (p > 0.05). 0.40 preparation with Rotate instru

The preparation limit--and, consequently, the extent of apical widening when instrumentation extends beyond the anatomical limits of the root canal--remains a controversial issue in endodontics. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of intentional foraminal enlargement on the disinfection of and apical bacterial extrusion from mesial root canals of extracted human mandibular first and second molars. After 21 days of biofilm formation (inoculation with Enterococcus faecalis), 60 mesial root canals of mandibular molars were randomly distributed into 2 groups (n = 30) acco

CLINICAL TECHNIQUE: It is generally accepted that the success of root-canal treatment is mainly dependent on the proper cleaning, shaping and hermetic obturation of root canals. Obturation of the root canal is of importance as 60% of endodontic failures are attributable to incomplete obliteration of the root-canal system. The clinical application of many obturation techniques used today demands the preservation of the natural apical construction or the preparation of an artificial equivalent during chemo-mechanical preparation. However, in clinical practice there are cases where the apical for

The aim of this study was to investigate and compare, via finite element analysis (FEA), the effects of endodontic access and canal preparation on stress distribution under functional loading of a mandibular molar treated with novel (TRUShape) and conventional (Vortex) rotary root canal preparation instruments. Identical plastic mandibular molars with natural anatomy had all 4 canals shaped with either TRUShape or a conventional rotary, Vortex (#20 and #30, both by Dentsply Tulsa Dental). Finite element analysis was used to evaluate stress distribution in untreated and treated models. Micro-co

OBJECTIVES: One of the primary objectives in endodontics is to achieve thorough cleaning and disinfection of the root canal system during an endodontic procedure. This aims to reduce microbial contamination and prevent the development of endodontic lesions. To attain this goal, it is imperative to establish access to the endodontic space that allows for the complete removal of pulp tissue and the accurate identification of canal orifices while preserving the anatomical integrity of the root floor and pulp chamber as much as possible. In this scoping review, we aim to explore aspects related to

AIM: To evaluate the influence of root canal form on the sealing ability of two root canal sealers.
METHODOLOGY: Twenty radiographically confirmed straight and 20 curved root canals were prepared with a stepback hand filing technique. Root canal aberrations created during preparation were determined by the use of double exposure radiographic technique. The prepared canals were filled with lateral condensation of gutta-percha and one or other of two root canal sealers (Pulp Canal Sealer and Sealapex). Leakage along the apical 10 mm of roots was measured with a fluid transport model at 1, 3, 6,

This study was carried out to observe if the status of the root canal might influence the healing process of surgically prepared experimental periodontal lesions. Forty tooth roots from four dogs were divided into four different groups: a) root canals with vital pulps, b) root canals open to the oral environment, c) root canals infected and filled with zinc oxide eugenol cement, and d) root canals infected and filled with calcium hydroxide. By means of a surgical intervention, a cavity was prepared in the medium portion of the roots. Six months later, the specimens were removed and prepared fo

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate, using microcomputed tomography, the impact of various mechanized systems on the geometry of the root canal system and dentin thickness in mandibular first molars. The hypothesis proposed that different systems would produce significant variations in root canal system preparation.
METHODS: Mesial and distal canals of mandibular molars were selected and divided into 5 groups (n = 10) based on the system used: 2Shape (25.06), Reciproc Blue (25.08), ProTaper Ultimate (25.08), ProTaper Next (25.06), and Univy New (25.06). Biomechanical preparation was pe

INTRODUCTION: Traditional access cavity preparation involves removing the roof of the pulp chamber and smoothing the dentin bulges at the root canal orifice, thereby creating straight-line access. However, this may damage more healthy dental tissue and reduce the tooth's fracture resistance. This case series presents a novel minimally invasive endodontic protocol for 1 maxillary canine and 4 mandibular premolars, which required root canal therapy, due to labial/buccal cervical decay that caused pulpitis or periapical periodontitis.
METHODS: Our treatment protocol includes the following steps:

Root canal treatment techniques probably develop and change more frequently than any other area of dental practice and it can be hard for the busy general dental practitioner to keep up to date. The aim of this series of five papers is to give a thorough review of current teaching and practice. This will encompass the rationale of root canal treatment, guidance on the latest technical procedures for preparation and obturation of the entire root canal system, and consideration of how these principles may contribute to successful treatment. The series will address the following issues: diagnosis

BACKGROUND: Removing plastic carrier obturators during root canal retreatment is challenging and often takes a long time. The aim of this laboratory investigation is to compare a recently described indirect, two-stage technique for removing plastic carriers from curved canals and evaluate its efficiency, safety and efficacy in comparison to a conventional direct technique.
METHODS: Thirty-six extracted mandibular premolars were chosen and root filled with plastic carrier obturators and endodontic cement. The teeth were allocated randomly into two different retreatment techniques: Group 0 (Dir

With the ever-increasing understanding of tooth anatomy, there is a renewed focus on the pulp chamber as an important component of the root canal system. For example, the pulp chamber is of critical relevance during diagnostic procedures such as pulp sensibility tests, deep caries removal, vital pulp treatments, access cavity preparation, tooth whitening, tooth restoration as well as methods for examining the floor of the pulp chamber to aid the detection of root canal orifices or the presence of perforations and cracks. The more recent concept of minimal invasive endodontics has also created
